My mother is (STILL at 94 y/o) a Classical pianist/teacher. When I played Yngwie for her years ago, it was the ONLY rock guitar playing she ever approved of. She then gave me crap about why I didn't take MY Classical training as seriously as HE did? What can I tell you, I liked Jazz more.
So how about if Brad & Lex react to Al DiMeola? I think they're ready. 😎
@@twenty3enigma Yeah, Al's music mom likes. It's the "rock" guitar she has a "problem" with. She ACTUALLY laughed when she first heard EVH. I thought she was impressed. Nope. She was bemused by his talent. She just thought it'd have been better served on the piano.
@@JazzDrummer1946 Do you think Egyptian Danza might be a good one for them to start with? I can imagine their eyes just lighting up almost immediately.
@@twenty3enigma Egyptian Danza or Race With The Devil... would blow Lex away. I'm sure they'd both appreciate Al's acoustic stuff too though.
If your mom ever found out he was a child classical violin prodigy before his teens playing with orchestras before he picking up a guitar.
This girl's reaction is everything. There are not many people like her in this world who can feel the depth of this artistry. Welcome to Yingwie fan club.
The albums '' Rising Force'' and Trilogy'' are Epic. I listened to them both repeatedly, as did my neighbours.... the whole street
Don't forget Marching Out! One of the best metal albums of the 80's.
I Agree.Marching Out is my favorite but all 3 are great.
@@metaldon50 I never managed to get a copy of marching Out, which is why it skipped my mind. I have heard it, but never got to listen to it anywhere near as much as the other two
Magnum opus...
Glad to see you guys finally got around to Yngwie! And yes, the style of this particular song (and a lot of his songs) is a subgenre of metal called NeoClassical - it is basically modern classical music in a metal style. He does have other songs though that are more straightforward classic metal songs with lyrics being sung.
Yes, that sound at the end was an organ, and there are a couple cool parts during the song where he and his keyboardist are doing a battle with competing solos. Basically the more 'slinky' more electronic sounding instrument was the keyboard.
What is she going on about whiskers and shit come on now!
Yngwie wasn't the first to blend classical elements into metal but he did turn it into something all his own - a massive talent still going strong today despite his many self destructive efforts over the years. In the same vein you might want to give 'Toccata' by Sky a listen & 'Beethoven's 9th' by Rainbow. Love & Kisses from the UK.
The Toy Dolls do a pretty fantastic version of Toccata in a punk style. Also some very nice guitar work ruclips.net/video/hdSfNzvLScI/видео.html
Blackmore was Yngwie's hero, Yngwie took it to another level though. Blackmore is the most important metal guitarist in history IMO
Yngwie is a guitar legend in his own mind and out of his mind. I love “Heaven Tonight” and “You Dont Remember I’ll Never Forget”
Good point he does have a huge Ego
He is a guitar legend, period.
@@lantzkeefer557 most of the shredders do have huge egos, you can't even be that quick and not get your head blown up to massive proportion. It's kind of a requirement.
Meh!
@@geneticrex Segovia is a legend, Django is a legend.. Malmsteen is a technically proficient guitar player who can play electric or classical guitar equally fast and great.. let’s see if he has legend status 50 years from now or is basically forgotten as an obscure artist.. John McLaughlin did all this back in the early 70’s with the Mahavishnu Orchestra
As yet another guitarist who cut his teeth in the 80s, the best word I could use to describe the first time I heard Yngwie is “terrifying”. I was just starting to feel I was getting pretty good at guitar, and this guy comes along and just laughs hysterically at my progress. Nothing since in my entire life has made me feel so inspired and defeated simultaneously. Still one of my biggest influences, though I sound nothing like him. His playing just showed me that anything at all is possible with enough time and effort, so whether he’s a jackass or not (spoiler: he is), I owe him a ton of gratitude.
Agree 100%! I've seen him live a number of times and I've always gotten as close to the stage as I could. Incredibly inspiring (and a huge ego blow) to watch him play up close. A huge inspiration of mine. Not so much to try and sound like him, but just to pick up my guitar a play. He's a monster!
He is actually a nice guy..
Mr. Malmsteen and his Stratocats with scalloped fretboards. Oh my God !
Musical lightning. Got his first 3 LPs. Rising Force, Marching Out, Trilogy.
Pure Fire.
Had a chance to see him in '89 at a little bitty outdoor amphitheatre in Hannibal, MO but we were leaving for vacation that day. Crap !
Marching Out my favorite from his catalogue. The song '' I am a Viking ''.......I take it as a subliminal message he is coming to America to dethrone Eddie Van Halen. LOL 😁
Malmsteen is something to behold. Stuck to his guns and never went 'commercial' as they used to say.
I remember he was supposed to be the next big thing. Instead he remain guitar hero with a cult following.
@@chrisa4695 he did, he definitely is one of the cornerstones of electric guitar history, along with Hendrix and EVH and some others. Cult following? It happens when you're a Heavy ⚡Metal musician, apart few exceptions like Iron Maiden or Metallica...
@@simonedangelosericola5742 Right, by next big thing I meant mainstream famous like. EVH. He is a cult hero along side Steve Vai, Zack Wilde, Joe Satriani, and many others. I saw him open for Iron Maiden in the 80’s and thought he was going to be “The Man”
I´m swedish so I´m bias here but...my god he is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please listen to more from him, there is a lot to choose from!
Yngwie: “People we’re always telling me ‘Slow down! You know, less is more.’ and I always said: ‘How can less be more? It’s impossible. More is more.” One of the greatest lines ever. #legend
I remember the first time I heard Ynwgwie. Being an electrical guitarist myself, it was a HUGE eyeopener! At first, you just don't want to pick up a guitar because you feel ashamed, like you've been lying to yourself. 😁 But eventually, you do pick it up again and try to figure out what in the hell it was you heard! This was back in the 80's, by the way, no internet.
I saw him do this live. Blew EVERYONE's minds.
me too back in 1987
I did to but not in the 80s damn you dudes are lucky. ima see him on May 1st for the 5th time though🤘
I'm not going to say if, but WHEN Lex learns how to play that guitar, it's going to be some great stuff. She has such a great feel for music. I want to hear what comes out of that musical brain. Great reaction guys!
Yngwie is on tour right now and will be here in Tucson next month. I first saw him in 1983 when he burst on the scene as a brash 20 year old neo-classical metal phenom (good call, Lex) in a band called Alcatrazz, and then saw him in his own band in 1987. He still is probably the fastest shredder around, and inspired a whole army of neo-classical shredders in the 80s, basically single-handedly creating that genre.
Black Star is his best song by far. Arpeggios from hell is pretty amazing too. This guy thought that guitar playing was for geeks until he saw Jimmy Hendrix smash and burn his on stage. He used to play violin put started plating guitar after that. He moved to LA and became famous. He was in a band with Steve Vai when he first stated called Alcatraz. Just a little back story that I thought you might like
So he used to be a violin gangster.
He was actually in Alcatraz before Steve Vai. Vai was his replacement, kind of like how Jimmy Page replaced Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds back in the 60s.
Brad's like : '' I wanna pause, after the solo...''
Yngwie : 'No'
Yngwie Malsteen is what I really jammed to back in the 1990s. It's a lot of fun seeing people get around to his work. 😄
Yngwie J. Malmsteen's guitar playing is like a blend of classical music like Bach & Vivaldi, and iconic rock guitar players like Michael Schenker (U.F.O./ Michael Schenker Group)... Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple/ Rainbow)... and Jimi Hendrix 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Yngwie has keyboards in his music - this was keyboardist Jens Johansson (Stratovarius)
Rachmaninoff
Yngwie is one of the Greatest 80 guitar Player.....his classical and baroque style is full of technical "skills" on guitar....
80’s? All time.
Yngwie was at the forefront of a wave of "neo-classical" guitarists that came out of the 80's. That's why it sounds like classical music, it's definitely based in it. Most of his songs have a vocalist, but he has two or three instrumentals like this on every album.
FINALLY YNGWIE, THANK YOU!!! ⚡🤘🔥🔥🤘⚡!!!!
My FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME. It is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. I love the violin and his playing mimics how its played in large part because he was inspired at an early age by a performance of Paganini's caprices. If you listen to this again try to keep in mind a violinistplaying along, you'll definitely hear a striking similarity. Lex, that part about getting choked up happens everytime I hear this. I can't help but cry when I hear it. Hearing you say that brought tears of joy to my eyes.
There's rabbit holes, then there's wormholes. Maybe next time, we'll get an Yngwie song with vocals, for Brad. "I'll See The Light Tonight" is a good start. But you gotta hear this guy get bluesy. He mostly does that on his cover songs. His version of Deep Purple's "Mistreated" is stellar.
Leonardo with mark boals would be good
@@woahblackbettybamalam I don't recall that one
Rising Force is the obvious choice that should be made.
I just discovered that cover of mistreated and its amazing
Yngwie J. Malmsteen was 19 or 20 when he composed this track... simply amazing 🤘🤘🔥🔥
I loved how Lex said it’s like really good cheese. That is definitely some top of line cheese!
People like Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani would be some of the really advanced guitarists.
Buckethead > all of them
I’ve always thought of yngwie’s solos as flowing water. So smooth.
One of the best neo classical guitarist there is. This song off his first and best album and one of its best songs on the album.
The Best
For me and just for me, this is the best guitarist of all time, very creative.
He is my favourite guitarist too. 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
My favorite Yngwie solo is "Suffer Me" from the Alcatrazz album
This is classical music, with metal influences. Yngwie is in my opinion the best guitarist in the world. He had some really good albums in the early 2000s and late 90s as well as his three first albums.
Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the best guitarist in Rock. He absolutely kills the classical metal sound. If you want to hear a great album, His album titled "Odyssey" with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals is phenomenal. Great music!!!
Yngwie is amazing. It's a shame that he gets so much hate because people can't tell the difference between true confidence and arrogance. I've met him on three different occasions and he was very kind and genuine. However, it is his show. If someone thinks they can come onboard and start trying to run things and tell him what to do, he is quick to remind them whose name is on the marquee. He always says "be unapologetically you." In doing that he has carved his own way, and his made his own legacy without compromise.
@@stanflahaut1893 that would make Pantera the assholes in that situation. Pushing someone until they finally react. There will never be another Pantera, though. I miss those guys. I need to look those videos up.
As they say....'' It ain't bragging if you can do it ''
I’m impressed Brad said his name correctly. This genre is called Neo Classical. Yngwie wasn’t the first to blend the styles but he definitely put it on the map.
This song and the album it’s from is so nostalgic to me. My friend and I learned this song back in high school some 25yrs ago.
Unreal listening to this with headphones before bed at 13 years old. my god.
"Like really good cheese" 😄 I love her phrases... and the folding of the hands at the end, that was lovely...
And don't stress dude, usually you are on top top of things when it comes to the meaning of the lyrics, that is really something. Especially after a first listen!
Saw him live before the lockdown. Awesome show in a small club.
Yes, now do some more neoclassical metal like Jason Becker - Altitudes!
As a guitar player growing up in the 80’s, this was absolutely shocking when it came out.
When you decide to do a song with vocals, I highly suggest " I am a Viking " or " You dont remember, I'll never forget. " Also Yngwie covers " Gates of Babylon " too. Anything with vocalist Mark Boals or Ripper Owens on it is really awesome!
Classical music was a huge influence on Yngwie as a teen, and as he learned to play guitar he would play certain classical segments. He refined his playing in his early years, and blended his classical guitar expertise into a rock style all his own. I first heard his guitar work when he was in the band Steeler. He later created his own band Rising Force, with keyboardist extraordinaire Jens Johansson. I was lucky to once see him perform live in Orlando, Fl. He's the real deal. What you hear is how he plays live. He's off the charts. In fact there's a You Tube video of Yngwie playing 'Icarus Dream Suite Op.4' with the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra, plus other You Tube videos of Yngwie. He's on a US tour this year too.
You guys should react to…
Yngwie Malmsteen - Black Star (Live)
🎸🤘
Yes!! 🙌🔥
You need to give them the link to the best performance of it though so they don't get one with a bad sound mix etc.
The best performance of it is on the studio recording where you can actually hear
the melody of the song and he's not screwing around because he can't be bothered
to play it where it sounds good..... on top of that, they need to ignore the corporate
suggestions and react to his music with vocals...which is 80% of his catalog FFS.
The style of metal that yngwie plays is called neoclassical metal
We swedes are very proud of having such a groundbreaking artist like Yngwie! I saw him in a small club-gig in my hometown here in Sweden in the -90 that he played for fun. He had Marc Boals on vocals and the stage was so low we in the audience could reach the band. My then girlfriend, manage to catch one of Yngwie's picks in her brah. Which was an accomplisment in it's own. 😀
I saw Yngwie in the early 80’s when he started out with Ron Keel in “Steeler” in small clubs here in the Los Angeles area as an inspiring young guitarist I was completely blown away by this incredible talented guy…
This is another one of the great guitar players that you really need to watch LIVE.
Actually my favourite Malmsteen album is the first Alcatrazz album from 1983, a year before this one. That was Malmsteen at his very best.
Many great metal guitarist play with classical music influences and structures, notes. Some jazz, too. Normally very technical. Real talent. Malmsteen is one of them. Also Randy Rhodes (RIP), Eddie Van Halen (RIP), Marty Friedman/Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Satriani, Iron Maiden, Dream Theatre, Queensryche, Fates Warning, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Judas Priest, modern day power metal bands, and also many other prog rock/metal groups. Should def check out more Malmsteen, he's a beast! Some of his songs do have some singing though.
Lex, messy solos would be like bands that are punk, grunge, alternative rock, etc lol They are more raw. Not as difficult, layered or technical.. Those aren't really classical music influenced.
@@stanflahaut1893 Yes true! Forgot.
Michael Schenker as well.
Now I hear "Now Your Ships Are Burned" ... I think I wore out a vinyl copy of Rising Force back in 84-85. People underestimate the impact this album had on guitar and guitarists but damn, it messed me up when I first heard it and then lit a huge fire under me and got me to practice a lot ... I still never got anywhere near as good as Yngwie ... but I'll also be nice to you if you bring me doughnuts so there's that.
Good catch lex he is a Classical guitarist. There are 2 styles of guitar playing blues and classical.
Check out Yngwie with an orchestra. AMAZING
I was so into Yngwie in the 80s, I had a custom guitar built with scalloped fingerboard .. never liked it much but you do float over the frets and it plays much faster....crazy things we do as kids.
One of the most influential guitar albums ever!
Wanna take your guided tour of the great guitarists in a jazz direction? Al DiMeola's "Egyptian Danza" is mind-blowingly beautiful. Virtuoso playing. Very cool transitions between the song's different sections. A "must hear".
Welcome to neo classical rock
Lex’s comment about whiskers made me laugh. Yngwie has a super light touch with his fretboard (left) hand because his guitar neck is “scalloped.” So even the slightest heavy touch will cause the notes to go sharp. Lex has an amazing musical instinct for someone with no training.
I read about his scalloped neck a long time ago. I thought it was pretty hardcore to mod a guitar that way.
I mean , her perception is sooo unusual....and incredible !
Hank Sherman of Mercyful Fate is another great guitarist.
I met him once. Got his autograph. Saw him in concert later that night. Caught one of his picks that he used. (I was in the front row) Still have it. Try Blackstar or Disciples of Hell.
When you watch him live you see how talented he really is.
Malmsteen is the 1st Baroque style guitarist one of a few. If you want a song with lyrics try, "I'll See The Light Tonight" or "You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget".
Tony MacAlpine is a contemporary of Yngwie's from the 80s. There's a video of his band performing a song called "Poison Cookies" live on EMG TV that is very listenable with lots of great hand shots of what the musicians are doing.
Absolutely all his music is this complex, and I believer he even writes ALL the parts. Insanely talented…
This man is speed! All his music is neo classical, check out his album trilogy!
Seen him live twice. He loves himself, but if I had that talent, I would be the same :) My favourite Malmsteen song is ‘You don’t remember, I’ll never forget’
I love that what you both got out of your channel over time is "I should learn to play guitar"! As a lifelong musician (not as a profession) it is refreshing
Yngwie is one of the greats on the guitar, although doesn't rely quite as much on gadgetry as some of the others. You can certainly hear many classical elements incorporated into many of his songs. King of the ideology of "More is More"....rarely at a loss for notes. You should check out his Concerto Suite with the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra. You won't be disappointed! For something related, you should check out Unlucky Morpheus Version of this song, played on violin....incredible as well!
Lex, you went oooooooooh during his little solo piece in the "We're Starz" video.
You get automatic bonus points for pronouncing his name correctly. \m/
Simply the best neo classical guitarist ever
Damn, yes-yes, now anything from the album "Odyssey - Rising Force" But my favs from the album are : Hold on, Dreaming, Riot in the dungeons, Deja vu, & Crystal Ball. Plus added bonus of having the awesome 'Joe Lynne Turner' on vocals!
You should watch this guy play.
Lex when you mention "whiskers". Yngwie modifies the fret board of his guitars to be fully scalloped. In that each fret is sunken. So the amount of pressure on the string will change the pitch
If you liked this than check out Icarus'Dream Suite #4 & Blackstar. Brad might like You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget w/Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. ❤ your reactions. ✌❤🇨🇦
Mark Boals sang that song, still a good song suggestion.
@@lassemaja8382 Thanks for the correction ✌❤🇨🇦
Yngwie, the master of Metal Guitar few even approach his abilities. Cracking the Code by Troy Grady a fantastic series of videos tells you everything you need to know about Yngwie and Yngwie power over us in the 1980s. I used to play his music on my radio show in Germany, and it blew everyone away.
This is my favorite Malmsteen song. The first album remains my favorite. This lead to a boom in Neoclassical guitar shredders back in the 80’s.
Mr Malsteen is a virtuoso. He is classically trained. He also has an enormous ego. He was once quoted as saying he knew everything there was to know about playing a guitar. His level of skill is amazing. There some guitarists that are all on the same level and then it becomes a matter of taste. He and Steve Vai were in a band called Alcatrazz in 1984. I was a pro musician and we covered Malmsteen's Blackstar in one of my bands.( It's on same album as Far Beyond the Sun. ) Great dual harmony guitars.
Yes, Any metalhead feels this... Can't wait till Lex jams this for real. Love that she identified the classical influence and was choked up by the symphony!! I remember the feeling when I first heard the album "And Justice For All"
One of many great musicians from Sweden 🇸🇪
They breed some greatest of all timers over there.
My favorite Yngwie is You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget and Queen is in Love
I'm only allowed 300 music notes per day, this took me way over the limit. I now have to lie down for a couple of days, thanks a bunch!
You guys have got to check out Steve Vai's latest: "Teeth of the Hydra". It's absolutely insane.
i highly recommend icarus dream suite opus 4. some of the best stuff you’ll ever hear from this man
He played a club in Canoga park California early in his career, every guitarist from nearly every band was front and center to see him play.
It sounds like classical music because it IS classical music. He's playing classical scales instead of blues scales. He's just playing the scales with a heavily distorted guitar rather than a cello or violin.
"... like really, really good cheese." I have the same impression, Lex. 😝
He has some standard sounding metal songs too.
"I'll See The Light Tonight"
"You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget"
"Heaven Tonight"
With vocals by different singers. He still shreds though
He is the Beethoven of guitarists absolutely amazing technique It's a little overwhelming and a lot to take in but you just respect his talent
So many songs..Queen is in love, Motherless Chiild, Heaven Tonight, You don't remember I'll never forget, I am a viking...These are just a few with lyrics.....I think you'll dig them, but soooo much more. Happy to see Yngwie got a reaction 🤘
I saw Malsteen in concert with Krokus in 1988. It was awesome!
Yngwie is the guitarist. Probably the most awesome classically trained guitarist EVER. I saw him live in the early late 1988 and the experience was literally somewhere between dimension moving and totally orgasmic!
"Classical Music and Metal", exactly!
It was called Neo-Classical, after Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, Yngwie and Randy Rhoads (from Ozzy's band) were some of the first to do that.
I LOVE Lex's whisker analogy! His playing requires such finesse and precision but also stabs! I totally felt that, Lex.
The crazy part is he pulls this off live too. There is some really early footage of him in Japan....I want to say 1984 or 1986 and the entire show is unreal.
I'll add, if it hasn't been mentioned already, Yngwie does have vocalists. My favorites were Joe Lynn Turner of Rainbow fame and Jeff Scott Soto. He's also covered an Aerosmith song with Dio before Ronnie passed.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Yngwie is incredible a one-of-a-kind. Only Yngwie can play like Yngwie. Check out some Eric Johnson, checkout Joe Satriani new video that he just put out today. It's called elephants of Mars. I just watched the video and it was incredible you will love it you have to watch the video though you guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Fun fact: Joe Satriani taught Kirk Hammett from Metallica and Steve Vai and many others how to shred the guitar (Dave Mustaine is self-taught despite the rumours)
You guys need to react to Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
BRAD love your dream theater jersey/ shirt/ long sleeve.. well its awesome..
A good amount of metal guitar is structured off of classical music. That's cool you guys can recognize that
Malmsteen is among the elite Guitarists in the industry as far as pure ability and talent is concerned but as a Songwriter if you've heard one of his songs you've heard all of his songs.
Listen to Buckethead. Try his song Nottingham Lace. Lex will definitely 'get it'. Not just genius, virtuoso guitar, but actually legit, great music too. A whole vibe -- groove and soul, not just appergios.
My favorite guitarist!
Rising Force, his first solo album is still one of the best albums ever made. (This song is off that album) Icarus Dream Suite No. 4, or Black Star should be your next reaction. Your minds will be blown. Also, he plays like this live (and yes he has performed with an orchestra) but generally, he fronts his band, and does have a vocalist(on some songs) and on some songs, he is the vocalist. The instrument you heard at the end was his keyboardist. Even more killer, is when he plays live, he embellishes, so he'll play a more difficult, even more intricate, and longer version, than what's on the album(which already seams an impossibly difficult, level) (: most people would have to play a more simple version live (most people aren't Yngwie)
'Now Your Ships Are Burned' , 'Forever is a Long Long Time' , 'As Above So Below' -(if you want to hear some vocals/lyrics) (Perhaps only MABs could hang with Yngwie, for speed and accuracy (Michael Angelo Batio) But that's another story, for another time
Y’all really need to watch him play live. He makes it look effortless
