Top job from O’Ward throughout the race. Hopefully he can be a great Indycar driver when the chance comes back to him next year. He has huge potential! Especially when he spent more time in prototype cars which is way different to the Road to Indy cars! Like how you can still move directly to Formula B from LMP2 In Project Cars!
AutoRockinRacing94 I’ll be the first one to admit Marco isn’t all that good even being one of his biggest fans, but the same could’ve been said for him if it weren’t for the Portland wreck lol
Next year will be my first year watching Indy for a season, I’m just starting to get into it I came over when Fernando did Indy, such an underrated Motorsport I really enjoy it
My only nitpick of the race was right after the checker flag when Emma Dixon was on camera and she did the number counting thing just like Ashely Judd did when Dario Franchitti won his Indy 500s just made me cringe come on Emma don't do that again please and I think the moment I knew Dixon was probably gonna win the championship was him escaping the chaos on lap 1 at Portland and coming back from the speeding penalty and finishing 5th pretty good season overall can't wait for 2019
Had it been Scott taking those shortcuts after that stuff up on lap one there would of been hails of you cant do that and hell to pay from the Andretti team. i bet my last and left nut on that. WELL DONE SCOTT. You made us Kiwi motor racing fans proud.
Dixon earned the championship and while I was disappointed that Rossi was fighting back through the field most of the race I did feel the race for the championship was still good to the end. I am looking forward to next season and hope NBC does a better job with the race coverages than ABC did (as well as what happened yesterday).
I feel like I can be the only person to say that before the race started, i was in the bathroom at the Raceway Cafe at Sonoma, and I'm there doing my business, and then someone walks in, it's RYAN HUNTER-RAY!
Ya know, even though Scott’s always been my favorite since I was young, I feel bad for Rossi. Because he did so well in the last few races of the season (except for Portland), I feel like he deserved it as much as Dixon did. Hope he wins it next year.
MsFlight198 California as a whole has lost interest in auto racing. Laguna seca will have a massive crowd next year and beyond. Indycar needs to finish on an oval. Fontana, Chicagoland would be awesome. But mark my words, Sonoma will appear back on schedule at some point.
Dixon's team also made a genius call in the Indy grand prix. Dixon started 18th, they pitted early, stuck on sticker reds and made up huge ground, he finished 2nd, that was a turning point in the season. He had 9 podiums in last 13 races.
As a Kiwi. Scott Dixon is our most successville international driver in our motor sport history .- others - Denny Hulme 67, F1 world Champ & CanAm champ. Bruce McLaren ,66, LeMans winner, CanAm champ @ McLaren Racing.Paul Radisich 93 multi World Touring Car Winner,- Greg Murphy ,Jim Richards multiple Bathurst winners,.Brendon Hartley 017 LeMans winner & WEC ,FIA, World Endurance Championship.] ,Rod Millen multiple Pikes Peak winner.& Kenny Smith, and Richie McCaw,-Wille Apiata,- Ed Hillary, [legends],- Mad Mike [Red Bull],- Michael Pickens,Barry Butterworth, [speedway] Steve Millen [Stillen Racing] ;. Scott Dixon has not got a raz a mataz personality , but is the quite achiever & leaves his talking on the track.[ice man] But as time goes on and history will reflect, that he is a Legend, and one of the best of Indy car champions.!!! 5 x times sofar & still counting..lol ...
Rossi going berserk and storming back really made a fan out of me as a relatively new convert to indycar (this is my first full season really paying attention to every race). Still trying to decide who exactly my number one driver is going to be, but its hard to deny rossi.
Great video! It was hard to tell how the race was looking to the fans at home, but I agree - a very competitive event back in the pack. Rossi's charge stole the show, even when RHR was dominating.
What you mentioned about Dixon's Indy strategy, that's why I like a no "playoff" system because what you do even in the 1st 2nd 3rd race matters, man I wish I was around in the pre chase era
How does he do it every season? The start of the season for Dixon was a bit awful but he came back strong and won it... there is a reason why he is the benchmark for indycar.
My only Question about Fred, is what happens to him of he wins Indy. Is he done, goal achieved? Or will he battle for a championship? Ok he is committed to Indy. But what about the series?
it was great to see wickens moving and talking and pretty upbeat . when you consider its going to a year or more rehabilitation this is a pretty good spot to be in after less than a month .
Alright, season review guys. Your opinions on the 2018 IndyCar Season? Personally I thought this was just another great year, with standout rookies such as Wickens and Veach, and Power finally getting a 500 win. The battle between Dixon and Rossi was amazing, and shows how high of caliber the drivers were. And Gateway ended up being one of the greatest races of the year alongside Portland and Sonoma.
Im really gonna be keeping an eye on Veach especially going forward. Was really impressed with how much he improved over the course of the year, while still staying aggressive. All in all as a new indycar convert this year i was hugely entertained and cant wait till next year. My home course is Road America, so of course ill be going to the race there again this year, but I was thinking about going to a second race as well, any suggestions?
Hugh Jass With Iowa under the lights again in 2019, that's race is gonna be pretty good. Only went there during the day but really enjoyed it when I went back in 2012.
One of the best Indycar seasons in my opinion loads better than the years when bumpers and all the aero dependent stuff was on the car. Lots of overtakes and Sonoma of all races was good! Can’t wait to see Laguna Seca next year!
although the top of the field didn't have much passing the mid pack was crazy! ive never been a sonoma fan but the new aero really seemed to help this year
i was at the race and it was a great race to watch from turn 9 and something i noticed was when Santino Ferrucci was in the hard breaking zone his car didnt sound like all the others. and MC Hammer was at the race he was in the 2 seater and they were still on the track when the race started!!!
17:50 You're right. Rick Mears had fans for the reasons color tv could support at the time. He was great, there must be something about such a huge heritage. I wold want Big Al or AJ over every Coogan (even if teammates) that ever furled a brow. Ive learned to like RP and the like since now. DIXIE EARNED A FULL SUPER LISCENCE AND SIGNED w/ CHIP!!! PROPS!
I know for a fact the #8 had (at least some of) Pato's Lights crew working on it. So yeah I can see where you're getting at with the Andretti-Harding support ideas.
17:40 I agree. Dominance does bring in a certain crowd. A lot of people I've known were not really interested in F1 until Schumacher and Ferrari dominated the early 2000s. The same goes for MotoGP and Valentino Rossi's dominance back then. Also Sebastian Loeb's dominance in WRC. People are attracted to record-breaking and new milestone-setting feats. While people who are already invested heavily into those sports and lean a certain way may disagree. But those eye-catching healines do bring in fresh interest from those that may not have bothered otherwise.
.I was at the race all 3 days his year and there were several people from McLaren at the race they all had Andretti hospitality wristbands and they were also hanging around the Honda trailer as well. (Insert x files theme here)
Did anyone pick up on the announcer that mentioned that Harding racing has some big news coming very soon? And then the broadcast went awkwardly silent and no mention of it again.
Rossi was clearly the dominant driver this season and it almost felt like he deserved the title more . Dixon on the other hand was just a bit more consistent that all but nowhere near as dominant as rossi . Rossi's run in indy500 and his overtakes there is enough proof.
6 months?! The Indycar season is far too short to help it catch up with NASCAR/F1 in terms of popularity, no wonder Tony Kanaan will be driving next year at 44 years old! (And people tell me Kimi Raikkonen is too old!)
Sonoma was a fun end to a great season. Really surprised how competitive it was given what I have heard about past history at the track. In regards to the marketing of IndyCar going forward after this great season, I think it will all depend on what the finalized driver lineup will be. If things stay pretty much as is, I agree with pushing Dixon as the main guy while marketing Rossi, Newgarden, O'Ward, Herta, and to a lesser extent Wickens, Veach and Fittipaldi as the young guns looking to take the top sport from Dixon. But should a driver like Alonso, Kahne, or Stewart (by some long shot) come into the sport, I would definitely try and market as a colliding of worlds and pit them against Dixon, especially if it is Alonso due to the pedigree he has coming from F1, while still pumping up the young guns in IndyCar. Other than that, I can't wait for next season and I want to thank you David for getting me into IndyCar. I remember watching it occasionally as a kid when Danica and Dario were in the sport, but your IndyCar Red Pill videos made me a permanent fan.
Rossi? Rossi why? It was a racing incident, but why? Rossi was the only one of my favorite drivers that are able to go get the championship. Larson & Ricciardo are certainly not going to get the championship this season. He did have a good drive back to 5th tho. Maybe next year.
My favorites is/was NASCAR- Was Carl Edwards now it's Chase Elliott. Indycar- Ryan Hunter Reay F1- I'm not a real fan of F1 seeing how less than a handful of drivers dominate. With that said I would say my favorite F1 driver is Max Verstappen.
While the 2018 race was very good for Sonoma standards, I don’t hold it in quite the same regard as the 2015 race. Very close though for me. I don’t even think you can say Phoenix was a bad round for Dixon where he finished fourth. His consistency won him the title. He was only outside the top 5 four times this season, and two of them were 6th place finishes whereas Rossi finished seven races outside the top five.
Though Rossi didn't win the championship, I have a feeling that 20-30 years from now he'll be considered one of the best all time. And who knows, if he didn't make some of the mistakes he made this season (Belle Isle comes to mind, as well as the lap 1 incident), he could have probably won the championship.
Rossi lost the championship in the last lap in the 1st race. It proved his head was to hot and he wasn't thinking long game. It later made him even more desperate and even more reckless.
A long cold winter begins...
Even colder with the NASCAR playoffs; but then it freezes when the F1 season ends...
David Land what will you be uploading now that the season is over?
Yep. Hopefully next year we have FRED NADO LONSO fighting for some wins. Atleast NASCAR & F1 seasons are still going on.
@@TometzMek He still does nascar heat videos. Not to mention project cars 2, hopefully F1 2018, & the weekly show that he does.
Gamerman009313 thanks!
Still can't believe NBCSN missed possibly the most important part of the race. Maybe even the entire season.
I was glad to see Dixon take the championship.
Still salty about NBC screwing up massively!
But a good fight for the championship
I think Dixon won the season in Portland. That terminator drive that kept Rossi from closing the points gap was the drive for the championship.
You should do a 2018 IndyCar season review
Top job from O’Ward throughout the race. Hopefully he can be a great Indycar driver when the chance comes back to him next year. He has huge potential!
Especially when he spent more time in prototype cars which is way different to the Road to Indy cars! Like how you can still move directly to Formula B from LMP2 In Project Cars!
Keep the Content coming David, your the reason i got back into Motorsports after 15 years!
Holy crap! No pressure! lol
so far so Good my friend
the intro of the New Zealand anthem 0:14 LOL!
The reason for the New Zealand anthem is because it's Scott Dixon's home country
the 'Manurewa kid'.
Dixon was born in Brisbane. Therefore us Aussies can claim a championship and Indy double...
Zac, He's a NZ passport holder, so he's a Kiwi. But don't worry, you can have Russel Crowe instead.
Damn, I don't know how many times I have heard that anthem when Kiwi's come to Australia for sports and I didn't even notice
Dixon and Newgarden hasn't had a DNF since Texas 2017.
That is very clean racing and Dixon has been lucky quite a few times! Portland for example
AutoRockinRacing94 I’ll be the first one to admit Marco isn’t all that good even being one of his biggest fans, but the same could’ve been said for him if it weren’t for the Portland wreck lol
He had a year on those two guys until that wreck.
Next year will be my first year watching Indy for a season, I’m just starting to get into it I came over when Fernando did Indy, such an underrated Motorsport I really enjoy it
That’s so cool to see Dixon win his 5th championship he’s truly one of the goats
My only nitpick of the race was right after the checker flag when Emma Dixon was on camera and she did the number counting thing just like Ashely Judd did when Dario Franchitti won his Indy 500s just made me cringe come on Emma don't do that again please and I think the moment I knew Dixon was probably gonna win the championship was him escaping the chaos on lap 1 at Portland and coming back from the speeding penalty and finishing 5th pretty good season overall can't wait for 2019
I was at the race everybody was like wtf happened to Rossi
Had it been Scott taking those shortcuts after that stuff up on lap one there would of been hails of you cant do that and hell to pay from the Andretti team. i bet my last and left nut on that. WELL DONE SCOTT. You made us Kiwi motor racing fans proud.
The andretti hypocrisy is real
give em a taste of kiwi!

500 wins for Penske Racing that is so amazing #greatestofalltime
Best team in all of Motorsport in my opinion.
I feel like I can be the only person to say that before the race started, i was in the bathroom at the Raceway Cafe at Sonoma, and I'm there doing my business, and then someone walks in, it's RYAN HUNTER-RAY!
You should've asked for an autograph while he was taking a piss...
Ya know, even though Scott’s always been my favorite since I was young, I feel bad for Rossi. Because he did so well in the last few races of the season (except for Portland), I feel like he deserved it as much as Dixon did. Hope he wins it next year.
It was sad to see the final race of the season with such a small crowd, IndyCar has a long way to go yet. Hope it gets better at Laguna Seca.
MsFlight198 California as a whole has lost interest in auto racing. Laguna seca will have a massive crowd next year and beyond. Indycar needs to finish on an oval. Fontana, Chicagoland would be awesome. But mark my words, Sonoma will appear back on schedule at some point.
The last Sonoma race was a good one at least

Absolutely Agree. It is important that every race have an impact on the championship.

I was there live and when I saw Rossi coming down turn 9, where I was sitting. I thought that Alexander Rossi blew the race and the championship

I can't wait till next year. It's such a shame the offseason is so long.
Dixon isn’t tied with foyt with championships cause foyt has 7 and Dixon has 5
What the hell were they talking about yesterday?
i think they were saying that he is no longer tied with anyone, and he now only has to catch up to AJ.
Foyt also said welcome to the ‘5 club’ in a tweet to Dixon.
Foyt is the only other driver to reach 5 championships (he did go on to win 7, but to do that, he had to past 5)
although the top of the field didn't have much passing the mid pack was crazy! ive never been a sonoma fan but the new aero really seemed to help this year

Sonoma should just suck it up and stay on the schedule. It’s not deserving of a season finale but it deserves to be on the schedule. Good race. B+
When it’s Sonoma County versus Monterey County, you’ll see Sonoma back. This year it was SMI versus Monterey County. The deeper pockets won.
Well I did hear their is going to be big news about Harding racing pretty soon during the broadcast.
17:50 You're right. Rick Mears had fans for the reasons color tv could support at the time. He was great, there must be something about such a huge heritage. Heck no. Put we are the champions there. Mclaren and nando to indycar!!!
The look on his (David Land) face at 0:12 was hilarious
Did anyone pick up on the announcer that mentioned that Harding racing has some big news coming very soon? And then the broadcast went awkwardly silent and no mention of it again.
KosmicHaynerRacingTeam well Harding is struggling financially so we’ll see what’s so big from them
Jesus the two drivers i'm rooting for in open wheel racing (Rossi and Vettel) bottling they're championship hopes in the same weekend...
Rossi was clearly the dominant driver this season and it almost felt like he deserved the title more . Dixon on the other hand was just a bit more consistent that all but nowhere near as dominant as rossi . Rossi's run in indy500 and his overtakes there is enough proof.
Scott Dixon is a top 10 IndyCar driver of all time.
I'd place him in the Top 5
6 months?! The Indycar season is far too short to help it catch up with NASCAR/F1 in terms of popularity, no wonder Tony Kanaan will be driving next year at 44 years old! (And people tell me Kimi Raikkonen is too old!)
Joseph Newgarden will be the next iconic figure in Indy car.
5:52, Southern California? Sonoma's like a 45 minute drive from San Francisco.
Sonoma was a fun end to a great season. Really surprised how competitive it was given what I have heard about past history at the track. The universal aero kit has made IndyCar one of best series this year (except Indy and Texas)
W Man Texas was a joke. Indy just needs better conditions(like 2017)
Rossi? Rossi why? It was a racing incident, but why? Rossi was the only one of my favorite drivers that are able to go get the championship. Larson & Ricciardo are certainly not going to get the championship this season. He did have a good drive back to 5th tho. Maybe next year.

Amazing drive from pato! He should get veach's ride

so overall, what did you think of the 2018 aero kit?
8.5/10
I loved it on the road and street courses they were awesome ovals need some tweaking but im sure they will get it right
7.5/10
10/10 on rode/ street corpse
6/10 on ovals
Not corpse course

Also Road America was a disaster for him. Scott ran 3rd Rossi ran 16th.
Nice video!
Bro you are good.
I guess my prediction of an easy championship in the bag came true for dixon
I was really hoping Rossi could pull this one off.
So, why hasn't NBC picked you up yet?
Because I bitched about the coverage lol
I'm here for Kahne watch
I’m pulling for rossi to win the championship next year
Well we got nascar for 9 more weeks at least and football till February
@MetalMastodon eh hockey is ok
6:07 and Alonso lmfao
When are we going to get a silly season video?
If letter of the rule is he cant gain a time advantage when he cuts the track then he is in the clear, he clearly lost time.
I say he won it at Texas
Rossi lost the championship in the last lap in the 1st race. It proved his head was to hot and he wasn't thinking long game. It later made him even more desperate and even more reckless.
*Northern California ;)
RHR led 80 of 85 laps.
*Northern California
I’m Ready depression
I am surprised you could see who was leading the race with you being blind and all
First
