- Flying the Bombardier Challenger 300 private jet from Las Vegas to the spirit of Saint Louis airport for a night landing. In the hotel I talk about older pilots entering the corporate pilot profession and while we're waiting for passengers on the ramp Jeff gives a short review of the Challenger 300 electrical system. The takeoff at McCarran includes the ATC conversations and the cockpit view.

Hi Capt. As a child, I always wanted to be a pilot. My father wanted me to be an engineer. So I did what he wanted. Got my chance in 1993 to go for a discovery flight. I received my private in 1997 went on to an Instrument rating. I quit my Corporate Sales job in 2006, In my 60's I received my ME Commercial rating and became a pilot for hire. Today at 72 yo I'm flying SIC Part 135 in a Lear 60XR. Although I am currently furloughed, I am going back to get my ATP and PIC rating as soon as this crisis eases up. Keep up the great Vids !! You were the first aviation RUclipsr that I watched, and I still enjoy your videos years later. Today I got my third class medical done, and I am signed up for my first flight lesson on Monday. Capt. Jim...I love your videos. I gained my private pilot, instrument and commercial ratings (with about 75 hours multi-engine prop time) right after high school back in 1982. I had every intention of becoming a professional pilot but got discouraged when my flight instructors who had huge amounts of flight hours where finding it difficult to get jobs as a professional pilots. Long story short, I now own a business (non-aviation related) and simply yearn to get back in the cockpit. Your videos remind me of my love of flying and the sensations and sense of pride you have from doing something the average person doesn't get to experience. Thank you for bringing back my passion!

Always nice to see Vegas when you come to town. It's so different now. Empty and deserted. Locals have been able to bicycle down the Strip because there's no traffic and no tourists. It'll be a long time before things return, & probably won't ever be the same.

Good video! The footage on final with your PFD in view makes me think I could land the Challenger....127 IAS with a 5 degree nose down attitude and 600 FPM....with a little coaching, that is! Patrick from Albuquerque

Why does the APU get left on so long? Can’t the engines provide enough electrical power once they’re started? I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
Seems they takeoff with packs supplied by apu, it is normally done to reduce maintenance costs on engine hot section.
I noticed when you’re in the challenger you’ll use the November in the call sign, is this due to the 2 digit registration number? Don’t think I’ve heard it when you’re in the citation. Just curious if it’s required or a thing. Only time I’ve used the November is when out of country.
My aircraft also has a single digit registration number. If don't use "November " in my initial ATC calls they will always ask "is that your full callsign?". So in my opinion its a courtesy, avoids confusion and reduces the need for extra radio communications.
Morning Jim. Just saw 9U had to return to ALN right after take off. Everything good? This was on June 11th at about 9 AM CST.
When's the last time you flew a King Air? I absolutely love the King Air. Flown the B200 twice (N646BM/N646DR) and my uncle was Chief Pilot for a Seattle power company that had a straight 200 and he flew it until they retired it last year and closed down their flight program. Currently I work in supply chain but would love to fly turboprops PT.
When you & Mike fly the Citation you usually switch who flys from leg to leg, but it seems Jeff always is the one flying the Challenger, no switching. Why is that?
Ryan Fortin in a previous video he has said if no passengers he can sit in left seat, he needs to be certified with passengers, he’s checked out in to many aircraft at this time.
In light of COVID-19 the risk management toward a career in aviation needs to change. Getting hired is going to be harder, at least for the short term. So maybe would be pro pilots don’t quit their day jobs if they’re lucky enough to have one now, where before they might have gone all in. Train on the side, then look for opportunities to instruct or use their commercial cert part time to build hours. Fly for fun too if able. It’s not a fast path, but there isn’t a fast path right now. So, anyone trying has gotta work with the situation.
I may be bias cause that’s the path that got me from PPL when I first commented on one of your videos years ago under a now deleted account, to today when I’m a CFI & CFII. I’ve long been saying we’ll see how I feel along with what the opportunity is when I hit 1500, and that’s still true. That approach also gives me the feeling I’ve got some agency in my fate yet, and gets me thinking about how I’m going to earn my hours well. :)
Which do you enjoy flying more, the Challenger or the Citation?
That's a really tough question. I like both but I'd have to say, I prefer the Citation for short trips and the Challenger for longer trips.

Jim, not a criticism here because I might be missing some information but why does it always appear your other pilot (sorry, can't remember his name -- Sean?) lands to the left of centerline. Is that just an illusion because of the camera angle?
Hey Capt! I’ve wanted to be a pilot since I was 4 years old. Started my journey at 18, had a few hiccups along the way with injuries, and now I’m a CFI at the age of 26!
I am at the beginning of my flying career and it is still growing.

Flying past the retirement age is definitely possible. Its really never to late to learn anything. This pandemic will pass and the seats will need to be filled.

Its a knob to switch the PFD to MFD in case of a failure. I believe the other knobs are for the sourcing of the information for those screens to be switched as well/the cooling fans behind them. I'm not a challenger pilot though.

I guess it's possible. Captain, while you're there would you see if you can get back my $75 I lost in one of the casinos? It happened back in the seventies so there may be some dust on the money . . .
It was a challenge finding a place to live stream but,, it wasn't very quiet.
Not saying he is a Democrat, but he is consistently left of centerline...
I'm afraid that COVID-19 is going to change both corporate and commercial aviation in this country and around the world. Business has learned that "Telecommuting" is a very viable option versus having to travel. I predict that more and more business will be doing business virtually versus in person given the cost savings alone. This includes reducing in-house staffing costs, reduce the leased space needs versus having to pay for the employee's internet connection from home. I think being a commercial/corporate pilot may suffer a similar fate.

@@chrisbowpiloto There are just some people that can't do the virtual work. My family is great example. I've been a work from home employee for years, my wife did it for 5 weeks and it drove her nuts. There were stretches the most I stepped out the house was to let the dog in the back yard for 5 days straight, before corona. There will always be in person jobs, but there will definitely be a change on which jobs are required in the office, and which can be accomplished from home. I previously worked for a company that didn't do Work from home unless it was a weather issue, they may be reevaluating that.
G, day from Australia. The meteorology report was short. On takeoff I thought 2/8 cloud cover blue sky.
Moreover, the power generation display on the MFD, is it displaying three generators; one each engine and one for all other electronics. Do you have a RAT that can generate power? 🤔 Thanks

If I was younger I'd certainly have gotten into flying properly... at 75, bit late now! Plus of course the inevitable cost factors.
Bombardier is an impressive plane. I imagine running costs pretty steep. Enjoyed the trip... reminded again how much Vegas sprawls!

With all of the pilots currently laid off or furloughed nobody without experience can expect to be hired right now. The supply pool is too high. It all depends on how fast the industry recovers. Domestic is already picking back up but I think it will likely be a good year or more before international travel resumes to any significant degree. We won’t know much of the damage though until some of the Federal money runs out in a few months and we see how the airlines get through the year.
