    My cousin's funeral in 2023 was such a beautiful day in Puebla, MX he was born and raised in Mexico, later migrated to the USA and then was buried at home in Mexico, placed with his parents in the large crypt. The singing a procession was a little different as the song we sang was his favorite song by Frank Sinatra "My Way". Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I really loved this video... maybe I will see you this Winter as we travel around Mexico again.

    Hi MM,
    The orange/yellow flowers you saw are the famous cempasúchil (“sim-pah-sue-chill”😎) aka Mexican marigold. (I suspect there’s a purépecha word for them, too.) They play an important role in the Day of the Dead ceremonies all over Mexico, so you may see them everywhere during this time. They are also used to produce a dye, which, strangely, is fed to chickens to deepen the color of the yolks in eggs, and to shrimp to make them look more “shrimpy”. SMH. Notably, the plants are actually native to the area you’re in.
    It’s fascinating to consider how much incredible detail and meaning can be found on a day trip like this, in a flower, or an item on a menu, or in the life of the person being laid to rest.
    Thanks for the video; I’m always glad to see them when they appear on RUclips.

    • @MoraMargaret
      @MoraMargaret  29 дней назад +3

      Thanks so much for your comment! I did not know that about the dye. I mistakenly said carnation in the video but yes it's cempasuchil. I went to see the flower farms, it was so beautiful!

    I just love your videos, Mora! I learn more things about Mexican history that I didn't know thanks to your research. The next time you come upon a funeral procession, I invite you not to worry about disturbing the participants as they pass. On the contrary, feel free to stand on the side and watch them as they walk past. You will be "accompanying them" with respect -- they will not be offended by your presence. In fact, they will feel honored that you took the time to stop and "be" with them in that solemn moment. I am so proud of you for fending off those dogs! You assured the safety of the Purépecha woman. What a valiant woman you are! ¡Qué mujer tan valiente eres! 🙂It is very, very admirable that you are "comfortable in your own skin" and that you are enjoying Mexico on your own ... in the company of your sweet dogs. A big hug from Jody here in Querétaro where my husband Jorge, our handsome, happy Golden Retriever mix Buddy, and I ("Pepe") are living quite contentedly. Much love to you, my friend. P.S. I have a RUclips channel (Joseph Quillian) where I upload videos so they won't take up room in my cell phone. I put videos on there purely for enjoyment. I have lots of videos of our adventures in Querétaro. 🙂

    Here is scoop on the migration of the monarchs that's just about to start in earnest (after the Día de los Muertos. "The monarch butterfly migration in Mexico begins around Day of the Dead in early November and lasts until mid March. But the monarch butterfly sanctuaries officially open to the public once they have arrived and settled in larger numbers, around the third week of November.
    Tip: It’s best to visit the butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico during the week versus the weekend. You will be rewarded with fewer people and no lines. From my experience, you’ll also be allowed to stay and observe the butterflies for a longer period of time."
    PS - In my experience, you can see thousands while hiking or driving in the area. They come in big numbers.

      Well, this is a very good question. I feel safe. The people around me seem to feel the same way and are enjoying the area. At the same time there was a violent altercation a few weeks ago that was scary, just 30 mins away. And the US State department says don't come here. To tell you the truth I have very mixed feelings about it. I'm staying and loving the area. I'm even thinking on staying long term. But the facts are there have been some problems in pueblos not too far away. But many places in the world could say that. Ultimately it's up to every individual. Sorry to sound contradictory. It's not a black and white situation.
