Hola Mora! Well, we arrived in Morelia last week after a two-week drive from Nova Scotia. Everything has worked out magically. We love our little AirBnB and our adorable hostess has agreed to rent it to us (off AirBnB) for six months or longer. We will come to Patzcuaro and Tzintzunzan after the holidays and hopefully can arrange to meet for a coffee. Hi MM, The orange/yellow flowers you saw are the famous cempasúchil (“sim-pah-sue-chill”😎) aka Mexican marigold. (I suspect there’s a purépecha word for them, too.) They play an important role in the Day of the Dead ceremonies all over Mexico, so you may see them everywhere during this time. They are also used to produce a dye, which, strangely, is fed to chickens to deepen the color of the yolks in eggs, and to shrimp to make them look more “shrimpy”. SMH. Notably, the plants are actually native to the area you’re in. It’s fascinating to consider how much incredible detail and meaning can be found on a day trip like this, in a flower, or an item on a menu, or in the life of the person being laid to rest. Thanks for the video; I’m always glad to see them when they appear on RUclips.
Thanks so much for your comment! I did not know that about the dye. I mistakenly said carnation in the video but yes it's cempasuchil. I went to see the flower farms, it was so beautiful!
@@MoraMargaret Flower farms sounds like a really interesting tour. I am envious of the weather you are enjoying. Here in Texas it’s been over 90F seemingly forever. Here we are at the end of October and still no cool weather. Definitely looks like a nice place to visit.
I just love your videos, Mora! I learn more things about Mexican history that I didn't know thanks to your research. The next time you come upon a funeral procession, I invite you not to worry about disturbing the participants as they pass. On the contrary, feel free to stand on the side and watch them as they walk past. You will be "accompanying them" with respect -- they will not be offended by your presence. In fact, they will feel honored that you took the time to stop and "be" with them in that solemn moment. I am so proud of you for fending off those dogs! You assured the safety of the Purépecha woman. What a valiant woman you are! ¡Qué mujer tan valiente eres! 🙂It is very, very admirable that you are "comfortable in your own skin" and that you are enjoying Mexico on your own ... in the company of your sweet dogs. A big hug from Jody here in Querétaro where my husband Jorge, our handsome, happy Golden Retriever mix Buddy, and I ("Pepe") are living quite contentedly. Much love to you, my friend. P.S.
