So, since my son was a baby Santa couldn’t come until we donated toys & clothes to kids that didn’t have any. He’s 22 now and sent me a picture of his donation pile before Christmas. Everyone still gets toys! I occasionally eat happy meals, just for the toys to stockpile for their stockings. A small lego set & Christmas p.j.’s on Christmas Eve was a tradition that my Mom started. She’s passed so I kept it up. Now my 22 yr old son & 37 yr old brother have to get matching legos or they fight 😝 Silly putty is also in every Easter basket, and yes I have adult siblings who still are babies 😂

    You shouldn't go to the food pantry or food bank if you're getting food stamps (EBT)

    • @mamabairds
      @mamabairds  Год назад

      Why's that?
      Some people only qualify for enough food stamps for the month to buy a week or two's worth of groceries. Supplementing your grocery budget by utilizing the food bank and THEN getting whatever else you need with your EBT that wasn't available at the food bank, seems like a great way to get through these hard times. Then if you learn how to preserve and can you can REALLY utilize the food bank and save all the produce from getting thrown in the trash. Then you could use your EBT to get meats that your family needs. Those are really expensive now a days.

    The problem with me going to a food bank is when I went, I had to stand at the side and go through the box they gave me and read all the labels. I'm so allergic to so many things like the cilantro, and pineapple and the list goes on, that they had to look for food I could have. I felt so bad because of it. I didn't have a choice though it was either that or go to the hospital. After a while they knew what I could and couldn't have so they had mine ready. Oh people didn't like that I got things they didn't get!! They voiced that very loud!! 🤣🤣🤣 it wasn't much longer I got where I couldn't see to drive. So I've been home since.

    We recently got a large freezer (awesome discount because of a small paint scratch you can’t see where we have it, and if we could, it’s an easy fix. So, while we’re freezing all of the obvious (and we have a vacuum sealer which is great for the freezer for long term) I wanted your opinion on what would be better to freeze vs canning it, or storing in another method? (Yes, you’ve inspired me to can…and I’m also saving all of our used glass jars…plastic ones, too…going back to my parents’ Depression/WWII roots, don’t throw away something you can use!) I’ve heard the Costco chili is fantastic (I mean, I haven’t gotten anything from Costco that wasn’t!) I’m lucky my husband makes fantastic chili (which freezes very well!) Just tried making a double batch of waffles and freezing the extras (now that we have space to keep frozen things!) and the waffles are easy and taste great toasted back up after being frozen, so I was really happy with that. I want to experiment with canning over the winter so that when spring comes, and we start our vegetable garden, I’ll be an ‘expert’! 😂 Well, all I need to be is good enough so that the canned things stay safe and useable 😁 so any advice would be great! Anything people have tried to freeze that thaws horribly? Anything canned that would have been better frozen? (I know, sometimes it depends on taste…I hate frozen broccoli or brussel sprouts, for example, but a lot of people think they’re great! I’d love to know what you have had better success with freezing vs canning. Thanks!! (Also, that’s great to cook for your MIL on the road, I’m sure she appreciates it! Home cooked food is so good. I love a good Mickey Dee’s burger and fries, but it gets old fast on a long road trip!)

      @mollymollie6048 Год назад

      @@janetnelson4729 Thanks. What do you think tastes better canned than frozen? I’d love your opinion. Also, I’m guessing that anything canned has to be cooked (boiled) first…and has to be floating in some type of liquid? Sorry to sound so ignorant…I’m thinking of things like Planters Peanuts…which I guess are vacuum sealed which I guess is like canning, but without heat or liquid? (The peanuts have been baked or roasted first, I’m assuming. I remember baking raw peanuts in the shell as a kid, but not unshelled ones.) I can look for instructional videos on how the process would work, but I’d love opinions of those who have done it before at home and what they’ve found turned out great, and what turned out “ewww, inedible,” “meh, edible but not great,” “worked well, good thing to can!”

      Mollie l have canned veggies, fruit, and meats. There is raw packed where what you can is not cooked at first. Then there is hot packed where the item is cooked then canned up. Cold packed is just like it says. Everything is put in the jars cold even the jar is cold and put in a cold pressure canner. Hot packed jar, liquid, and food is all hot and placed in a hot canner. One needs to know what can be water bathed and what MUST be pressure canned. When l started out l did small batches to see if we like it canned. I used jelly jars at first to try things out. One thing l found out is potatoes canned up a little weird. Don't add milk to them to mash, when your go to heat them up. They get pasty. These potatoes were just peeled and rinsed then put in jars and processed. They look fine in the jars but when l made dinner with them and made mashed potatoes they were pasty. So now I just add butter and salt and pepper to them. I have made pork bbq and processed that. So meats are a bit of a different texture. To me a bit ugly in a jar. But taste good. I have canned ground beef that I fried up and used beef broth as my liquid. This l used for spaghetti sauce or something quick that l needed ground beef for.

    • @mollymollie6048
      @mollymollie6048 Год назад

      @@shirley1824 Thanks so much, Shirley! I would imagine potatoes would be harder to can as they really change texture when frozen as well. I know there are methods to keep fresh potatoes in their regular state fresh for quite a while, and need to look up more on those, as we plan on growing potatoes (and I love them, lol.) I hadn’t heard of “cold packed” canning, thanks for that tip, and I’ll look up more on that. It seems like meat canned up as part of soup already cooked would probably be about the same? The deep freezer would be my meat option…but not everyone has that. I agree with you, I’ve seen cooked meat canned in a jar, and it does look a little…unappetizing, lol. I appreciate all of your tips so much! Thank you!!

    Food bank would be great because our money isn’t stretching to have healthy and good meals. I’m disabled and have an autistic son. I have no transportation and no one willing to take me unless I pay. 3 years ago I was earning 150,000 a year and had a million saved after 42 years of working as a Registered Nurse. I started getting sick and seeing doctors every 1-2 weeks. I finally couldn’t. I applied for disability, I could not get unemployment because I was trying to get disability. Well a few days after I stopped working I started seizuring. I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and needed immediate surgery. Well I had no income coming in so I had to start using my savings. Surgery, chemo and radiation, plus paying mortgage, utilities and groceries ate through a million quickly. I did get approved for disability in six months after I had a few thousand dollars left. I had to stop paying my credit cards because I couldn’t eat if I paid them. So now I live on disability and have no savings. I don’t qualify for any assistance because I’m usually 100 dollars a month over to qualify. With food prices it’s horrible. Eggs are 9 dollars. I can’t even make struggle meals very often. I won’t eat for 2-3 days so my son can eat. I fully had intended to work at least 10 more years and double my savings. But things happen we can’t control. I wish I could get to the food bank. So your life can change completely without you having no control. I never thought I’d be in this situation. I lost my house and car. I had never lived in a rental and I have to now. With the economy I don’t know what to do. I have cut on everything. I even make my own laundry soap and cleaners with vinegar, baking soda and other inexpensive materials. Don’t judge anyone. I wish I could do what this young lady does. But I tire easily and the brain tumor leaves permanent damage even if it’s removed. They remove it so it doesn’t grow and cause more damage. You never know what people go through. Because everyone thinks I still have money because I have all the stuff I bought when I had money and would buy it cash. So my appliances and furniture are nice but they don’t know I live paycheck to paycheck and sometimes can’t even do that.

Love the blender…. NICE! That food processor attachment will be so handy for you! Nothing wrong with a smooth salsa!! Good idea about freezing the cilantro, bet you could sprinkle some on the chilli bake… or maybe parsley would be better? If you get your hands on another bag of herbs you could dehydrate!

    Thank you for normalizing food banks. When I was struggling when I had littles I never thought I was "in need" enough because we were a two person income home. I thought it was normal having to figure out how to feed 4 of us on 30 bucks for the week. When I got older and started donating to food banks, I learned about the massive amount of food waste because people like I used to be felt the same way. Food is not optional, you can't choose to just not eat when you are strapped. I don't care how much anyone makes, if you need feed, please seek out resources. Learn from my mistakes.

I went from having almost anything l wanted to not being able to work and pay my bills. I am not ashamed to say l to use a food pantry from time to time. I have MS. So at times it is hard to stand in lines waiting. But l get help when l need it.
