I'm sure there are exceptions, but nearly all the countries with elite women's athletics are the wealthier ones that have more girls playing sports. I am surprised that the European countries which produce so many elite male hockey players have not made more progress catching up to the U.S. and Canada for women's hockey. Several of the women on the American and Canadian teams are the daughters or sisters of NHL players. "Captain Clutch" for Canada is Marie-Philip Poulin, who has been scoring big goals in the finals of these international tournaments since she was a teenager. Some of the women are quite tall and beefy, especially the defenders. Team USA captain Hilary Knight is listed at 5'11'', 172 pounds. There's no fighting in international hockey, for men or women. Officially, the women are not allowed to bodycheck like the men, but the referees let them get away with some of it (the hit at 11:02, legal for the men, was called a penalty). Demonstrating the absurdity of this sexist double-standard, if a 15-year-old girl at an American high school plays on the boys' team because there is no girls' team, she is allowed to hit and be hit, but the best women players in the world are not. One thing I find fascinating about the U.S.-Canada rivalry is that the players are constantly switching from teammates to opponents and back. They play international tournaments every year, but in between they are teammates on professional teams. Most from both countries also played at a small number of American universities. They must have some intense love-hate relationships. In fact, there have been 2 or 3 marriages between one retired American and one retired Canadian, with all of their former teammates celebrating together at the weddings.
I think it has to do with cultural priorities. US Men's Football is subpar because American Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Ice Hockey take the best athletes. But US Men's Football is getting better. US Women's Football is a big priority for us. WNBA is about to have a big bump. We are learning to really appreciate our women's sports. I have never watched women's ice hockey before. Thanks for showing this.

Poulin aka Captain Clutch is widely considered the best womens hockey player in the world at the moment. Her all around skill is incredible, and she always shows up for Canada. She got two goals in this game, has scored multiple winners in the Olympics and World Championships. She always shows up when we need her most. Overtime especially. If you want an incredible goal, her winner in the 2021 IIHF in overtime.

The "falling down a lot" is actually diving down to block pucks, it's done in the NHL too - and its crazy - players who it deserve a lot of respect. There are generally less stoppages in international hockey because of the size of the ice, if you follow a player all the way to the boards, you can find yourself too far away from the action when the puck is passed and becomes free, you are better to be covering a player who the puck ice going to be passed to, than chasing a player, who most times will be able to get the puck passed you and back into play. when that happens you are far better to be more central and closer to the play. International hockey is just a bit different.

Hockey between these two has been absolute hate FOREVER. Not bad blood, but hate. It’s always them squaring off for everything and the top medals switch back and forth. The USWNT and CanWNT soccer teams are exactly the same, too. In 2011 at the Women’s World Cup in Germany, the USWNT went to final against Japan; Canada finished dead last. Fast forward a year to the London Olympics, and the two faced each other in the semifinals and THAT was one of the most heart-stopping football matches I’ve ever watched. Christine Sinclair scored a hat trick, but the USWNT won the game 4-3 with a last gasp Alex Morgan header past Erin McLeod with about 30 seconds left in extra time. You guys should react to that match, it was CRAZY.

The US had a head start in a lot of sports compared to other countries becuase there was a law that colleges had to give the same amount of sports scholarships to women than men. So any school that had a football team (80 scholarships) had a lot of womans sports, because no other sport has that big of teams. Granted, colleges recruit from other countries too. Many olympic athletes from around the world also compete in the NCAA.
Pretty much every women's gold medal game is like that. Always Canada and the USA. Most evenly matched rivalry in sports. All the other teams are just playing for bronze. And yes, Utica is in Upstate New York.

The lighting is also a bit substandard as it was played in a relatively small arena in Utica, a small, rather faded city in upstate New York (I've been there).

The ice surface for international competition is larger than the NHL. Even the men look smaller on the international ice surface.

Womens soccer is so big here because colleges have to give equal amounts scholarships to men as women and football rosters are huge.
Also (not to hate on soccer) but where I live at least its always been seen as a little kids and girls sport, once guys grow up they all quit.

I didn't watch the game but you can't call a penalty in OT of a playoff/finals. It must've been a penalty they had to call.
