    those apple bananas aren't fully ripe, if you let them ripen more they will taste like strawberries

      @Bullboy_Adventures 7 лет назад +25

      They're delicious, but are a pain in the anus to tell when ripe. And if you wait too long, they'll lose flavor. I honestly don't know when they're ready to eat.

      I’ve only had them once. We bought a bunch of them from a coffee plantation in Hawaii. They planted them as windbreaks and just sold the fruit to tourists who were touring the coffee plantation. We just left them in the car and they were marvelous they never went brown and they were delicious for the entire week we were there.

      Nakrul987 , you are thinking of dwarf Brazilian aka Hawaiian apple which gets a strawberry shortcake flavor, the manzano apple banana is different and taste like green apple jolly rancher and top teir banana flavor! Both are absolutely incredible and I have both! Mysore has a candy tartness aswell and those 3 strains are my favorite bananas that I can grow in zone 8b where no one else is growing bananas!

    I had seen a version of the slice the banana trick on the cover of a Ripley's Believe it or Not book back in the 70s. Their version involved needle and thread. As soon as I saw the slices I thought of it. A banana which grew with natural slices should be withered and small, and probably rotten because the fruit is broken and the nutrients aren't going through it.

  • @MidnightSt
    @MidnightSt 4 года назад +2

    yup, you did fool me with the pre-sliced one, because i love scifi and have a bit of idea where genetic research is at, so i imagined splicing a bit of... bean (or ...other sources i don't want to think about), a piece of dna which causes segmentation in these kinds of tubular shapes. you would splice it somewhere to cause the soft white peel to create few-cells thin layers not only between the peel and the meat, but also at regular intervals, how other plants/animals have in their structure. And i'd say that's perfectly doable nowadays, except nobody yet decided that would be a profitable gimmick, probably =D

    'Apple bananas are also sometimes labeled manzana bananas - "manzana" is Spanish for "apple". The ones I get where I live are not quite ripe until the peel splits lengthwise - then they are at their best, sweet and delicious. Much better than a Cavendish.
    And the self-slicing banana didn't make any sense to me, because there is no internal structure in bananas that could be modified to do that - so I didn't believe it, but I thought Jared believed it.

    I saw the Patreon video last night, so I knew what was coming, and the long buildup was killing me. I just wanted to see how it looked. I think you sold it really well, except there was a little bit of banana that squirted out of the pinhole as you were opening it. I'm not sure how that could have been avoided, but it did kind of give away that the peel had been compromised. Although, I don't know if I would have noticed it if I wasn't in on the joke.

  • @jameswest4819
    @jameswest4819 4 года назад

    That is a kind of loose-knit name for that shape of banana. The ones I was used to in Hawaii. They have a slightly astringent tang with most of them. If you want an interesting kind, try the Cuban Red and let it get ripe. Many of the cavendish variety that you currently get are likely to be genetically modified. Most of them are too sweet, even when they are green. They have been plagued with banana disease and since most of them are clones of the same plant, they are susceptible to mass die-offs. They have added genes from other species. In Hawaii there was a lot of emotion about the pig-genes that were put in papayas.

    I only saw this video in November 2020.
    I am well acquainted with the Apple banana.
    But the "pre-sliced" banana is new for me. So I thought "that's impossible." My hunch proved right: April 1st. The pause ("hesitation") in the video gave it away. Fake.
    Apple bananas are far from fake.
    A tip: take a long trip to Surinam.
    A country in the Guyana's, South America, near the Caribbean's and bordering on Brazil.
    Many variaties of bananas, among which Apple Bananas (bananas there are called "Bacoven", plural, don't ask for "Banaan" or you get an inedible fruit eaten raw, but delicious when cooked or baked), the " Indgy Bakba" ( - red - Indian bacove
    , yes, it is deep red outside, orangy pink inside), my favorite or the "Gedang Radja" (King Banana), as long and thick as my arm and extremely flavourful (to my surprise).
    You can find them in the covered markets or go to the Plantation "Alliance", where they grow them, as well as the plain Cavendish, for export.
    While there, look for other fruits, like the "Sapotilla", whicj tastes a cooked Apple with Cinnamon. Extremely bad to keep, so very rare outside the tropics. They spoil within days after picking.
    Surinam, a country worth visiting, but take several weeks or months even!

    People from Latin American countries call the first one you describe manzanos, or plátanos manzanos, which translates to apple banana. Mexicans make fritters out of them...they mash them and mix them with flour, and little salt, and some baking powder. Then fry them in deep fat and then sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon, which produces something akin to an apple fritter.

    I remember Mr. Wizard showed how to slice a banana without peeling it, with a needle and thread.

    Watched this on April 9th, not realizing it was published April 1st.
    When you got to the sliced banana, I watched for a minute or so with great interest, but when you observed how even the slices were, something clicked & I felt an immediate need to check the publishing date...

    sounds like apple banana is a good choice if you don't really like the sometimes overbearing banana taste. Ordinary banana can be too sweet and kinda boring frankly. Also, typically it takes over too much in smoothies and such. what do you think?

    I have known how to do that for years, 😂. I have learned one thing, though. If he gives the banana a bad review, that means I would like it. Our tastes in bananas are completely opposite. 😂😂

      Interesting article about how early settler of the United States made jelly with barberry fruit.
      Maybe a episode of you walking the countryside or suburbs and tasting what you find? lmkyt Your Paw-paw episode made me soooo want to taste one badly. I'm obsessed getting my hands on one this year.
      my favorite fruit from childhood was Loquats, just so loquacious are they. I would spend hours gorging on them as a small boy in Campbell, California, coming down only when I had to RUN to the bathroom. haha!
      Thank you, thank you keep up the good videos.
      PS - my wife thinks your cute! haha! 😉

    Thank you for giving a name for the variety that looks like what is the most common variety the markets here: apple banana. I never thought it has a hint of apple though, maybe I just haven't paid attention - or maybe there is another variety that looks just like apple bananas.
    I was hoping you could review a red variety: I've heard they grow in one region in here but I have never seen them in the market - maybe they don't grow very well or they don't taste so good?

      I live in Cambodia. There are some fruit I like that I have not seen in a market, like "pring" (phonetic spelling) most likely because it goes off gets damaged too easily. Then there is "Monday fruit" that is edible but they are really used like potpourri.
