If you do one thing in this life, let Joan Armatrading seep into your heart and soul. Her music is just the most incredible jewels of pure universal beauty that you will ever hear. There is a song for every moment, every emotion and you can use them to help you smile or to cry. I first found this lady when I was 16 and at 42 my love of her music has not diminished. Every concert I have been to see her in, she sat patiently and signed everyones items who waited and there were some long queues!
Today, I am 60 and how that happened is a mystery ... 60! I am still mad about Joan Armatrading. She take me back, so closely, to the early 1980s, my college days and my very first love who introduced me (drop the pilot) to this amazingly wonderful artist. 40 years later and she still moves me. But this song ... it kills me, soflty.
This song takes me back to a time in my life, yes, in the late '80s, that was very painful, but the memory of Joan's music then, and hearing it again now, makes it beautiful.
""Who on earth ever held me like you"....."Love by you And no other loving will do...In your time Baby come back to me" Powerful lyrics and voice. Special.
I think Miami Vice back in the 80's had a lot of people scrambling to find music they heard on there. Back then there was no Internet to type it in and find it in a minute. This was one of my favorites from that series.
This song is so emotional it makes me cry almost all the time I listen to it. I love Joan Armatrading, wish I get to see her perform live someday in my life!
You know how to touch my soul with your deep notes and your high notes, singing with so much tenderness and emotion … I ve been a fan since 1977 and I know the lyrics and you are THE BEST !!!
An extremely painful AND beautiful emotional place to be: "In your time baby come back to me, don't leave your guy lost in space...you're the only one to guide me out of this maze." I have such respect for artists who can put such deeply felt emotions and experiences into such simple but powerful words and phrases. Without a doubt one of my favorite songs of all-time.
San Diego State University. There weren't many of us in that huge place where they probably held football games. Joan came out and asked, "Where are all the people?". I wished I had the heart to say, "Were here!". It was wonderful to see her up close and so personal.
Wow-- this is from my favorite Joan album, "Secret Secrets"-- never thought I would see this-- If you have more, I would love to see them all! Thank you so much for posting these!
I was at this live performance at NEC, and the sound was good for such a large venue. The BBC recorded the show, which was recorded by me on VHS tape, then from VHS to Camcorder, then on to computer to convert to a suitable format for RUclips. Then of course, how good is the amp and speakers on your listening system.
WOW! That takes me way back. I saw Joan sing this song at Radio City Music Hall during her Secret Secrets tour. Joe Jackson came out and played the piano for this song (and Talking to the Wall). It was a great show!!! (with some pretty cool light effects!)
Wow! Takes me back too. I saw her in Austin on that tour and - no Joe Jackson - but her performance of this song was even better and more emotional than the album version. She had tears in her eyes. And she wasn’t the only one.
LOVE BY YOU, very possibly, is my FAVORITE of any number of Joan's songs. I first saw her in concert at Radio City Music Hall in NYC @1982...and she performed this with Joe Jackson on keyboard. Wow! She recently announced that her upcoming tour/2014 would be her last (large) tour. Could Joan POSSIBLY endear herself to me more if she performed LOVE BY YOU once more...?!?
@jhstudio64 Yes, definitely on the Secret Secrets album from the 80's, and the Willow - Joan Armatrading Collection is the best bet nowadays. Last week (Nov '11) this song was attempted on guitar at a local amateur open mic night in a wine bar in Northampton (the recording is on our channel). Obviously, Love By You sounds a lot better with piano, and with Joan! Thank you so much for putting this original NEC live recording up.
gorgeous - all heart. does anyone know who the piano player is? i know joe jackson plays piano on this song, on joan's secrets secrets album. but i'm pretty sure this is not joe. thank you.
I heard this song first on Miami Vice back in the 80's or early 90's. I thought it was great then and still is great. She has a very distinctive voice and we hear far too little from her on this side of the pond.
@hjmcgill This piano sounds like a Yamaha CP80, which was an attempt by yamaha to make an electric version of an accoustic piano to save the need to keep having to tune it. Although not a good immitaion of an accoustic piano, it has it's own distinctive sound, which I like. It has been sampled by EVERY electric Piano manufacturer. This is the only known recorded live recording of this song, so although not the best quality recording, it is performed perfectly by singer and pianist. So enjoy
@AbbieHoffmansGhost I guess I'm no expert on keyboards and sound systems. All I know is that I have played this recording at least 40 times in a row just today, it's on my Facebook, and it's all I listen to. But you're probably right, it could be better.
@ibpink2 Hi pet, thanks for your reply. :o) and if you type in joan armatrading home page you will find her and all her tour dates for the next year. You can subscribe to her from there. She is also on facebook. I hope this is useful to you if not contact me again and i'll try and send you some links. Good luck! X

Heard Joan sing this in the San Diego amphitheatre in 1984 maybe? Transported me to another place entirely. She is amazing. None like her, ever.
San Diego State University. There weren't many of us in that huge place where they probably held football games. Joan came out and asked, "Where are all the people?". I wished I had the heart to say, "Were here!". It was wonderful to see her up close and so personal.
She is simply wonderful... the music of Joan has changed me...
One of the greatest things one person could ever say about an other, that they changed you. I hope Joan reads this.
Just wonderful, Joan.
Yep she still the best artist out there
Wow-- this is from my favorite Joan album, "Secret Secrets"-- never thought I would see this-- If you have more, I would love to see them all! Thank you so much for posting these!
God, I love Joan Armatrading. So extraordinary. And ridiculously over-looked. Thanks for posting this.

Feeling every word sang
I first heard her on Miami Vice in the 1980's. You have to credit MV for being ahead of their time in regard to promoting music artists, Great song!!!
Beautiful.
❤ this woman.
sooooooo amazing
The original with Joe Jackson on piano is a classic.
thank you, it is lovely.
Good voice ,love Wojciech.
I should've been born in the 80s 😭🎶🕊
in the night with no one to hear me
I'm afraid and I cry
I can’t seem to stop…..
@AbbieHoffmansGhost
You have to be kidding me. This is beautiful - That guy is playing my heart out!
Lovely
The best singer!!! Please come to Israel again and again and...

I love you all. God bless you all!
The one current singer songwriter who reminds me of Joan is Lakin, who's terrific and has similar eclectic soulful style
I heard this song first on Miami Vice back in the 80's or early 90's. I thought it was great then and still is great. She has a very distinctive voice and we hear far too little from her on this side of the pond.
As love as it is, do you have the full concert in video form at all?
I miss you too
@laffaminute2010
Hi, This song is on "Willow- Joan Armatrading Collection" which is still on sale at Amazon UK, so I imagine also in other countries.
@laffaminute2010
Also on "Secret Secrets Album.
It is also on iTunes
Anyone know if there is any sheet music for this?
Beautiful eh..
Miami Vice lead me here. Song ended an episode....😢

The piano man looks like ian maidman, bass player in the JA 1983 world tour.

@AbbieHoffmansGhost VHS is 30 year-old technology..
God this is so beautiful. Crappy audio and all :)
