She is an outstanding songwriter and isn't often held up in the regard she should be 😊
A few years ago my son returned from Glastonbury and said "Oh dad, there was this lady there and you would have loved her, she was fantastic". "Oh son, what was her name". "Joan Armatrading, have you heard of her". "You mean this Joan Armatrading" says I, pulling a strange black 12" disc from out of my collection. "Oh you have heard of her" he says. "Well, since she is one of the best to put music onto vinyl of course I have heard of her". 'Down To Zero', still one of my favourite tracks. And isn't it great that the (moderately) young are still discovering Joan's amazing talent?
Young people have a hard time discovering older artists. Radio stations just aren't up to the task. If you have someone like your dad you're well on your way. 👍
Lol. Far out! My exact words (& actions) w my daughter on any # of ‘70’s-‘80’s artists. JA was a particularly good “reversal” for an “uncool Dad”. Cheers.
This has got to be one of the greatest songs ever written!!! My dad introduced me to this incredible artist when I was just a child in the late 70’s!!! Thank you dad!!! ❤️❤️❤️ so much about this song thats sublime! The lyrics, her Beautiful voice with that vibrato and that weeping country guitar!!! Her vocal range is astounding!!! 🥰🥰🥰
@@gbsailing9436 Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman are completely different artists and both masters in their fields. I'm sure neither of them want to be pitched against or compared to each other.
I was 17, had just come out when I went on my first date with someone I wanted to be with. We went to dinner and then he invited me for coffee at his place, and played Joan Armatrading's 'Track Record'. That was my introduction to her music with a kind man who never took advantage of a naïve kid. He kissed me on the cheek and asked me out again. The memory and music still make me happy decades later.
April 2020 - COVID19 lockdown in South Africa. Listening to Joan and enjoying as much as I did when I first heard her amazing talent back in the '80's, possibly even earlier.
The intelligence in the lyrics, the warmth of the extraordinary voice. "But oh when you fall... fall at my door." The promise in those words. This is a perfect song.
+comprehensiveboy I really understand that! It's overwhelming to see these things slip away in the modern world. We have to just keep seeking and enjoy what we can.
This song, just hearing the opening chords, calms me beyond reason. It is just phenominal in every way. Joan has provided a soundtrack to my entire life. Long may she continue
I remember the effect Joan Armatrading’s voice and diamond shaped phrasing had on me when I was a child. Hearing DOWN TO ZERO come over the radio was almost paralyzing. I felt what I heard, but would never understand the adult lyrics. Even today this performance rakes up through me. A writer of the time said of Armitrading, that she created “some of the most deeply personal and emotionally naked songs... of our times". For me, this song, arrangement and performance are immortal. I will never understand it, like I will never understand TS Elliott’s “The Love Song of Alfred J Profrock” but somehow that makes it all the more compelling. I think loving things I might not understand but sense are true, is a most powerful expression of freedom, which is not at all-available to all.
She’s a pioneer… no, she never got the recognition she so richly deserves. Well, some of us know pure gold when we hear it ;-) She’s been one of my favorite singer songwriters since I was a kid back in the 70s. Her music NEVER gets old!! Joan Amazing Armatrading!!

Brilliant, ridiculously underrated singer songwriter, one of the best of her generation (Cue Joni). She will stand the test of time and be listened to for centuries to come.
Wow...I love Joans music but it reminds me of my best friend, Dawn who struggled everday w depression. We worked at a hospital ER together and played joan armatrading in the lounge. She lost her battle and took her own life at age 27. Here it is 2019 and I still miss her so
