I am not sure how much they can, but unfortunately is our picture of it skewed a lot.
What we get to know is mostly what American journalists (the enemies spies) are allowed to do. North Korea know totally well that any journalist's foremost job is to sell stories, and that is done best by shocking people. And if then a journalist is from America, does it not make things better. I am not saying that North Korea is a paradise on earth, but I do also not think it is as bad as the American journalists are kept from the population.
If a person was respectful, asked genuine interested question that was not about political subjects, praised the good things they saw and in general did not start by pissing all over people's life, then may the things get a bit more free and less restrictive.

He was at there between 2012-2018. He is not in DPRK now. He was Thailand last year. These are old footages.
