I smelled this 10 years ago...and I knew, I wasn't ready. Yesterday, I bought my first bottle after smelling it and realizing it differently for the first time. I simply couldnt understand it before! Now, I cannot get enough. Otherwordly.

I went to a perfume store recently and asked for Chanel No. 5. The staff asked me how old was I and said it's for people 45 and older. He offended me and was rude. I knew what I wanted no matter my age. He instead tried to sell me scents that smelled like candy. Goodbye!!! I won't go back.
OMG! I am so sorry to hear this! That person was extremyl rude! How dare he?!?! Good that you stuck to your position and di not buy anything there! There is no age for a perfume! If you love it, then it is a part of you :) Many people working in these places do not know how to deal with fragrances! Fragrances have no gender! They have no age and they have no limits :) xoxo

i think as well that is rude and also i think is a miss conception this idea that chanel n5 is for older woman. because a perfum is something so personal, and a older woman could prefer something more sweet and a younger woman can prefer something bitter, and in the case of chanel n5, is not average sweet or average bitter at all, but a bouquet that sometimes te roses comes out very clear, most of the time the ylang ylang has this constant presence, and ylang ylang is very seductive note, and the iris that gives the powdery vibration, plus the aldehides, that is vintage, yes, but not dated, as if you cant wear it now... and women in that time were young when they started to used number 5, and my grandmom was a young woman one day, as well, and grandmoms in general, like to wear chanel 5 since the were young. so is almost a lack of creativity and imagination to me people who defines such a interesting perfum as something simplistic and rude like OH is an older woman perfum, as if would be a bad thing such as older or mature woman aspect.and is much more timeless by now, now than ever actually.

I totally agree with you. Chanel N°5 is a lovely perfume. It smells so good. Although it's marketed for ladies, but men can also wear it too, It's unisex. The first best selling perfume to bear a designers name since 1921.

I'm a male and I was with an old friend of mine (female) who wanted to stop off in Sephora to buy some make-up after we had dinner. The sales girl was over hearing me say to my friend that I wanted to buy something classic and classy for my mother for Mothers Day. She suggested Chanel No 5 and I told her I never smelled it before. She had me smell it and was like....WOW...this smells really good! My friend simply just said one word "Beautiful" as we were smelling it and I thought what a perfect word for this perfume. I bought my Mother the pure stuff .5oz Parfum bottle for $200. Not a price I thought I would have ever payed for a perfume/cologne/Eau De Toilette..etc...but the smell compelled me to buy it for her! I hope she loves it! Thanks for the history Dacob! I'm more convinced I made the right choice for a Mothers Day present!

This was truly the best review of Chanel No 5 I have came across. You are great at any reviews not just fragrances.
I just turned 21 at the end of October. I remember every time I would try N°5 I absolutely HATED it. I had never liked it I thought it smelled musty, and like an old lady and had only ever thought it smelled nice on one person. But I put it on recently at a counter in my mall and absolutely fell in love. It's luxurious, classic, elegant and makes me feel of high society. I have yet to purchase it. I'm debating on the EDP bottle or the pure fragrance oil. I know the oil is what would be closest to the original fragrance but I know I'll end up using it quite quickly because I'm in love!
+David Wilson This is a great comment David! It shows what I always say about perfumes. Sometimes when I try a perfume, I dont like it but I learned not to be too quick to judge them because I noticed from experience that with time I understand certain perfumes that in the past were not understandable to me... its like as I grow and mature, new doors open up in me that allow me to access the nuances certain fragrances have to offer. Its like magic :)

+Super Dacob is that a good book to understand chanel no 5? I downloaded the epub version to decide whether this can be my signature scent.
I wanted Dior Pure Poison to be my signature scent but the thought that Dior might discontinue it or reformulate it (like they do all the time to most of their perfumes) just give my anxiety. Since no 5 is almost 100 years do you think they'll still be here in 50-60 years? I wanna be buried wearing no 5 👏😂
I spray CHANEL No 5 and No 19 all for 21 years on my body and it is te best parfum ever. I am a fem men who's 27 years old and for me it is a unisex parfum. Thanks for show this super video Super Dacob! Greetings from Bobby from The Netherlands

I use to hate No.5 I’m my early 20’s it was too strong but oh my not unless the formula has changed or maybe I’ve changed in my 40’s it’s one of my favorites. I’m a collector of them all I like them all but Coco and No. 5 are my favorite🙂

Ugh, you are soooo good at describing scents. I've smelt this one before and also thought it smelled like old lady and way too strong. I'm going to the store now and going to smell it again (and hopefully buy it as well)

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! You have inspired me to order the pure parfum and can't wait for it to arrive! I've been using the Edt for the last month and I can't get enough of it, so intoxicating. I'm 29 and feel like No 5 is completely ageless! My best friend constantly compliments me on my fragrance yet about a year ago when we were both sniffing perfume bottles in a Macys she commented that No. 5 smelt like old people. I think you need to spray and try this fragrance before making any judgments. So many misconceptions around this one!! Thank you for your videos! I finally found someone who is obsessed with everything Chanel just as much as I am :) :) :)

Strangely enough, I prefer the EDP in its current reformulation. I found the previous version too strong. It still lasts about 10 hours on my skin in hot and humid Singapore. Love it!
I love the EDT too, but it only lasts about 3 hours on my skin
Dear Debbie, yes, the current edp is a bit fresher than the old formulation and it lasts ok on my skin... but edt is so sad since I adore it but need to keep reaplying each hour... xoxo
Your collection is so awesome! I could look at this magical mystical creation called Chanel no 5 all day long. The young crowd are missing out if they go by the initial spray of Chanel no 5. It can be perceived as old lady like. But after 10 min. or so the dry down begins and so does the magic of Chanel. The sophistication, glamour and elegance of this smell will take you to another dimension where you feel better. Excellent review!

Out of all the perfumes i use... Chanel No 5 and Yardley's English Lavender are the only perfumes i can wear day after day after day. It seems i have a thing for vintage fragrances.
Guerlain has older fragrance try vol de nuit if you like no 5 ... It's good to be different :)

What a gorgeous review! I must say! I never liked Chanel n.5, ever! But as many commented below, I wasn’t ready for it. Lately I was kinda browsing in Chanel department and gave a try to Chanel l eau ..liked it…but tried premiere as well..was not convinced… Then I thought let me smell the classic n.5 and I was completely hooked! None was fabulous like the classic one and bought it immediately. After like 20 years since my first approach, I am finally ready to wear it, to understand it, to love it….

Dacob, I love your videos! You're so good at describing these perfumes and you give such fantastic emotions and beauty describing them. When you mention them I feel like I need to experience it too and from your other videos I recently bought two vintage YSL Opium, EdT and Secret De Parfum(and the modern EdT), and a bottle of vintage EdT of Poison. I'm on the hunt for No 5! I'm wearing a sample of the EdP and it's good but I completely understand that powder you mentioned. I've only smelt the EdP and the Premiere and the Premiere is good, but to me they made it office friendly for the casual young person. My sister said that it was "cleaner/more sterile" but she also said it smelt like baby wipes. I still like it but i'd prefer the EdP for the richness. I really would love to try the EdC. I hear it's very animalic, very heavy with the civet. I am curious, Dacob, how you feel about Guerlain? I recently bought a vintage EdT and modern EdP of Shalimar and my god is there a huge difference! They're beautiful, especially in the drydown, but the vintage just has a better quality to it. I should've bought Parfum Initial especially since it's been discontinued and it's cute with the tassel and pink liquid. I figured I would ask because you have a fantastic collection and thought you might have a vintage Shalimar parfum, which to me is holy grail status just based off the regal bottle. Anyway sorry for talking so much, have a good wednesday :).

+Andreea C You are not the only one to complain about the poor lasting
power of N°5... a lot of N°5s edt and edp poor asting power is due to
the modern reformulations of the scent. The vintag eversions of N°5 were
much stronger and intense... Layering with the cream will enhance
longevity but I would also try the pure parfum. That one last for many
hours on my skin...

Hi Dacob! Just watched this review for the 2nd time. I know, I'm obsessed with No.5 :-)!! I started to fuss around with essential oils, and based on the notes of No.5 I was able to make my own custom blended body oil to compliment and enhance the No.5 EDT. I'm just so happy I did this! The scent plays out beautifully. If you, or others who read this are interested, I can put the recipe in the comments. Let me know! xxx

choose a carrier oil (I used avocado oil, but sweet Almond or grapeseed can be great too).
Then ad the essential oils:
2 drops of patchouli
3 drops of rose
5 drops of Ylang ylang
3 drops of bergamot
You can play with the amount of drops to your taste. I like the citrussy opening from No.5 and the heavy ylang ylang.
Use the oil after bath/shower and let it sink in for a few minutes. Then you can use No.5 and you'll see that the fragrance will be enhanced and will linger more.
You can alter the recipe if you prefer more of the rose scent or even the Jasmin notes in No.5. You can definetely play with that. I didn't use Jasmin simply because I didn't have any.
Give it a try and let me know what you all think!

Great video, as always. I love the comparision of the different versions split by the eras . I bought the pure perfume during my first business trip abroad, it does mark a milestone of maturity for me. I bought the dry body oil last year and that one is very true to the pure perfume's scent at least to my nose.

My mum got her 1st ever perfume from my dad as a gift in the 80s, and you know what? Chanel No5 is actually her one and only perfume that she will ever wear. She stated she just can't open up to other scents, as for her Chanel No5 is just synonymous for perfume. I find this quite funny actually.
I, on the other hand don't like No5 on myself - I believe it's just like you said - it has to do with one ones chemistry with the scent. I feel, it doesn't develop right on me.
Nevertheless, I'll try out the pure Perfume next time when I'm at a Chanel counter. Really hope I like it!

I was gifted Coco Medemoiselle EDT 12 years ago and I thought I was in love with it until I tried No.5. I have EDP version and now after watching ur video will get pure perfum soon.
I wore it in the scorching heat of India few months ago and kept getting complements the whole day. I think it smells differently each time depending upon the weather outside ( never badly ).

Very informative video Dacob I just got into Chanel fragrances recently with Egoiste being my latest purchase where they sent me a sample of Coco Mademoiselle which smells wonderful I can only imagine how great No5 must be.. Next time in the city will definitely make it a must try fragrance when picking up Bleu De Chanel for the collection! :)

Fascinating history, I was wondering if you wore chanel no5 and to my surprise you do. I'm looking to buy it and was searching RUclips for some reviews which there isn't. Your is in depth and informative especially on the different concentrations. I feel like I travel through time when you describe these scents its like a movie. I didn't know the brad Pitt advert was flop I loved it,didn't like brad but the idea to which they were taking chanel which is the future, its genderless, its timelessness,No5 being everlasting for all, its quite powerful. I wore Dior all my teens remember trying no5 in Paris and being repulsed and then just buying another dior fragrance, twenties was guerlain and in my thirties I'm suddenly intrigued by chanel ,have worn two fragrances of theirs and now I really want to see if I can wear no5. I want to experience the enigma that is this fragrance and thanks to this video I will take the plunge.

It's the only one that I enjoy and feel comfortable wearing it, from 5 to premiere. I tried so many, and none is making me happy like Chanel 5 ...it's taking me somewhere I want to be...and also, I have a hard time smelling other perfumes on me and I tried even the most potent one, like creed or Francis Kurkdjian... Said that, glad you like it too ...namaste

Pedro Almodovar has some amazing movies , I am glad you mentioned him , he is just as classic as Chanel ( only a bit he is not vintage ) .Also like you said Chanel No5 is a bit too mature for a teen personally i feel for teens perfumes like DKNY 1s are very good , also some of the Moschino 1s , having said that i do have a small Chanel 5 as it is a classic x

Great great video... totally agree with the fact that it's all about that chemistry... as a female, 99% of the time I love perfumes that are meant to be for "male" type... and to be quite honest I never go for them because of the fact that I think o maybe they're right and this is too strong for me or whatever...I should start being more confident in this case 🙈

+estoyazucar Before you purchase it please try it out on your skin first. Only after wearing it for at least two hours and still liking it on your skin, will you kind of know that its a good perfume for you! Nobody should spend their hard earned money on a perfume they haven't tested first on their skin :) And if you love it, then I am sure you will have great times with it because N°5 is a great life companion! I just love this smell so so much. I use it everyday. I wish their Chanel no 5 hair mist can be stronger as it is too light in my opinion.

I took your adivse seriously (we talked some time ago about N°5 as well) and I bought myself a pure parfum in the smallest bottle lately. I waited with opening it until I read the book about N°5 that was gifted to me. I hid the perfume to read it without thinking about opening them all the time! I was going to wait with pure parfum, but I watched this review a few times and I decided - now, that I know the whole story, the smell must complete it. The impression of N°5, I mean. And let me just tell you, I loved the parfum! I wore it every day for the last month. And you wouldn't believe what happened to me this Monday! I was very stressed out that morning and while I was putting on the perfume, the bottle slipped out of my hand and the whole juice spilled on the floor! My heart was broken and it still is as I don't have any stock of the extrait. Good news is I am going to Paris in two weeks so I will buy myself N°5 in the true parisian boutique there. (I am wondering between 15ml and 30ml bottle). My question is, what is the main difference for you between the EDP and parfum version? I don't remember the EDP at all as parfum grew so close to my heart for the last month... I onced mentioned to you how I love Marilyn Monroe so loosing N°5 was like loosing her in a sense. And all the history associated with it, gone. But you know, those bottles are really good, though. It fell down from 1.5 meters on the tiles and nothing happened to the bottle itself. 🤤. I am truly amazed. But the most terrifyng thing is that I don't want to wear anything else anymore. Just N°5... what to do with all those bottles of other great fragrances I used to like? 😔

So glad you love N°5 PARFUM but so sad it fell and spilled! I hope you will soon get a chance to get a new one! As for the EDP... its reminiscent of the PARFUM even though its less deep... it smells flatter... cheaper in a way since it lacks the sophistication of the PARFUM. The EDP is a mass product while the PARFUM is produced is much smaller quantities. xoxo
Super Dacob Hey there 😁. I finally had an opportunity to smell the EDP, (that's why I was waiting to give you an aswer) 😉. I agree with you, not only it smells cheaper, it smells much more soapy 'cuz it lacks the deepness of the parfum. I don't know what it is about, but I remember the parfum to be as a lacquer, so deep and thick. They seem quite similar, but I can sense the vetiver through the EDP right away. I didn't sense that at all in the parfum. (And I like it this way). It was just strong, sophisticated and warm as a honey and sun 😊. Despite the toughness of it (the feeling you can do ANYTHING it gives you), it is also very fragile. I mean I feel (felt) quite fragile and strong in it at the same time. (The paradoxes of Chanel, I guess😋). You know? Like the warm and sensitive person Marilyn was. And she was witty and tough at the same time! She had the sweetness and charm but could fight for what she found important. That's why I love her, and I find that this perfume matches her even better after knowing that. What hit me first was like... Why to pay so much for an extrait (and in those small quantities) when I can have bigger bottle of EDP for less? But I definitely see why that occurs now. 😋😉😊 What truly frightens me is that I smelled several other fragrances today, even niche ones... And no matter how I liked them I didn't love them - never as much as N°5 in the parfum concentration. I think my heart fell for it. And there's no coming back 😉. P. S. My trip to Paris is in 4 days! The way I see it, with me anyway, if a perfume suits you, you personally can't smell it. The one who near you is the one who can smell it. The worst perfume would be the one that make you sneeze, then you know it's not fitted for you. As for Chanel no 5, I love it so much. Especially the Parfum. It is the best perfume in my opinion. Cos I have tried others.

Chanel no 5 is a clean, soapy, powder like smell. Not really a perfume.

I absolutely LOVE chanel no 5 and my husband loves it on me too!! I started wearing it when I was 19/20. I was never actually interested in no.5 in my life before that..I was one of those who thought it was meant for the senior demographic and I never actually even smelled it before..I just assumed! I first tried it when my great aunt died and when my family and I were clearing out her house I found a .25 oz parfum bottle (I think i was 17 or 18, the parfum was still in the plastic packaging!) in her bathroom vanity drawer. The juice was daaaaaark and had definitely gone off (it seemed that she never used it... as it was still quite full!) but I was like what the heck Im gonna dab some on and try it...so I did! And amazingly I LOVED it even though the top notes were rather stale haha the heart and drydown were still quite nice, it was just verrryyy strong haha! Shortly after that I discovered the eau premiere version which I also LOVE and I started hoarding the little sample vials of it because I couldnt afford to buy it yet haha. My husband was the first one to buy me a bottle of n.5 (eau premiere) when we were dating (so I was almost 20 then) and then I bought the edp when he was deployed...and finally last night I bought the parfum (im 26 now) and im anxiously waiting for it in the mail!! This stuff has been through so many phases of my life now and I adore it. You are totally right how even when you wear it during the worst of times it doesnt bring you bad memories like some other perfumes do.. it just...warms you and comforts you so it doesnt matter what happens in your life while you wear it, no 5 is always going to be there for you! Have you tried the new eau premiere version in the square shape bottle? It is a little different than the tall one..I think its more subtle and softer but still great! I really should try the edt but for some reason Ive been hesitant and i really dont know why tbh that may be the next one on my list unless l'eau completely captivates me first, I also wonder what it will be like!! :) I admit that I have been binge watching your videos today actually, you are so easy to listen to and really know how to describe perfume so perfectly!! haha :D If you ever have the time and energy you should think about doing a video on no. 5 and its transformation through the years from bottle type to scent changes etc. I loved listening to the history aspects about it and find it so interesting but im sure something like this would take a lot of research and digging LOL! :) :)

Yes, it would take a lot more research than I have already done since I do notown all the variations of bottles and formulations done for N°5 throught the decades... its a labirynth of information and history and slight changes and tweeks that I think perhaps even the brand CHANEL cannot or could not archive all the changes made till now. Hello!! I just came back here to say that I have since tried the EDT for no 5. over the past few days. I actually had the luck of finding it in a local fragrance shop in my town, they sell all brands of perfumes and they also decant fragrances in mini spray bottles for you (for cheaper) so you dont have to buy a huge bottle if you dont want to. I noticed they had the no 5. edt and went ahead and bought a decant of it! I have since decided that, while I do love the edt, the other versions do better on my skin. There is something about the EDT that turns musty on me while the EDP is much crisper and fresher and warm. Im glad I have a little bottle of the EDT now to use and Ill probably end up buying a 1oz of it eventually anyways for my collection LOL. I also received the parfum today in the mail finally and have it all opened up but I havent tried it yet...im going to wait until this evening : ) It smells amazing just from the bottle though!!!

Hi Susy, thank you so much :) If you wear N°5 a lot then your nose just gor very used to it but that is ok. Other people will still smell it on you all day long. Its just you that does not smell it on yourself any longer. If you wish to smell it on yourself again then I suggest to take a brake from using it for at least a month or two. Not even a sniff! Get your body to forget the smell. Then after two months when you use it again it will be amazingly strong and intense again! You will then get used to smelling it again but thats how it goes... Thats also another reason why I use many perfumes always in rotation so that I keep my body guessing :) xoxo

Eau perfume...is for going to work. Chanel no 5 Parfum is for going out for dates or when you're with someone special. That's is in my opinion.
Heya Dacob! I was wondering if you could do a quick tutorial (if possible) on how you apply your fragrances as I'd love to know! If not, I'd love to see a detailed explanation of how you apply them. Also, do you only spray one fragrance per day or do you mix them up (e.g. different combinations of fragrances etc.) I JUST love watching your fragrance videos and reviews and think you're doing an excellent job in keeping these videos up. So really, thank you SO much for all these videos. Also, I'm planning on buying either this or no.19 for starters as I've never really used any Chanel fragrance ever. +Residenteviladicted Thank you so much for the lovely comment! Kisses to Dubai :) So I apply a fragrance before leaving the house about 20 minutes to 10 minutes prior to leaving... If I stay at home all day, I would occasionally spray a fragrance to just smell it around me cuz thats what I love to do :) but when I go out, I tend to overdo it. haha.. I spray twice on each side of the neck, once at the back of the neck, up to five times on my chest, once or twice on the top of my head and twice on my clothes... I also spray twice to three times on each wrist... So you can see, its a lot... and this is the maximum I spray. Then I spray less if the fragrance is super intense and strong. I tend to spray less in summer months then I do in winter moths. I would of course suggest getting both N°19 and N°5 but perhaps for the warm months its more interesting to start with a green scent so perhaps N°19 would be good for you to begin with :) xoxo

Do you own an Eau de Cologne in your No. 5 collection? I recently acquired a decent one 3/4s full that still smells lovely! I had to own it as it was the original formula that my mother wore exclusively when I was little. As a boy I would sneak some on my wrists whenever I thought I could get away with it!

Hi Michael! I do not have an EDC in my collection right now. I had it in the past. The vintage bottles and juices have a clear trace of civet / musk in it which makes it very strong and particular. That ingredient would be prohibited today. xoxo

The Chanels of late have very poor staying power, so expensive but not the longevity one would expect from the price.
