R. NATHANIEL DETT (1882-1943) was a pioneering Black composer, pianist, conductor, and music educator whose works bridged the worlds of classical and traditional African-American music. Born in Canada, Dett's compositions often drew inspiration from spirituals, folk tunes, and other Black musical traditions, blending them with classical forms and techniques. His compositions, including works such as "In the Bottoms," "Juba Dance," and "The Ordering of Moses," earned him acclaim for their rich harmonies, rhythmic vitality, and profound emotional depth. Dett's legacy extends beyond his music; he was a prominent figure in the African-American musical renaissance of the early 20th century and a staunch advocate for the recognition and celebration of Black musical heritage.
