"when there's an exciting, short term gain staring you in the face, sometimes it's hard to see the long term damage you're doing. Even if it's to yourself." That's like, every problem in the world right there.
That's pretty much what they say in a highly regarded econ book: "Economics in one Lesson" That and only looking at a smaller group of people, and not the whole
Thinking about the mobile games market literally make me sick. It sucks that a lot of people are going to grow up thinking that that is what gaming is, and how it should be, F2P, Microtransactions etc.. Out of the hundreds of thousands of mobile games, there's maybe 10 that are actually worthwhile.
I completely disagree with you, NO ONE WILL THINK THAT THE BEST OF GAMING IS JUST ON MOBILE. Everyone I know who play mobile games are aware that games on Pc, Xbox One and Ps4 are better. No one is saying "Mobile games are the best games out there!". It is like saying that McDonald is the best food out there, everyone is aware that there are better alternatives but more people don't care and why should they?If they want to eat at McD then that's fine and if they want to only play games on mobile then that's fine. If you go to Best Buy, GameStop, Game, or any other video game retailer they are selling XBoxs, PS4s, and 3DS games! They are demoing their games there! People see them all the time. You don't see mobile games getting a huge space like those others do you? People are do not think that mobile games are the best of the best, what you are worrying about does not exist. Some people can not afford or refuse to buy consoles or one reason or another and they play mobile. Some people are not into games that much and will play mobile games, that might actually bring more people into gaming!
***** I don't know if you were talking to me but I was talking to gnarkillguch with my comment and I apologies if you thought I was referring to you. But my comment mention that there must be some people who are getting into gaming through mobile but are you sure that there are people who want to? If I am watching summer blockbusters in movie theaters will I try to watch movie classics? or look for something more Symbolic/intellectual? I have doubts. If people want to take the next step into gaming and buy a console or pc that's great! If they want to just play mobile games then its fine too.
I grew up on licensed games, mostly because when my parents went to buy me games at a young age the things they would pick up would usually be things they thought and knew I liked. Luckily for the most part I got fairly real games, like ones from the lego starwars series and the chronicles of Narnia game, and a harry potter game which was actually my first open world title. I kinda lucked out, but every now and then I got something horrible, unforgivable, yet those never turned me off to games. I think licensed titles are great for early gamers like I was, but shovelware can totally destroy that, and could've destroyed me in all honesty.
Calvin Moehlman I had the pleasure of playing Megaman X7 as one of my first unlicensed games. You better bet I went back to my lego starwars's after that shit.
The shovelware problem is not just a standalone problem about the games industry itself, it is everywhere whenever quick greed in commerce collide with development, it exists in websites, software, hardware, toys, and sometimes even bloody residential buildings. As a serviced office clerk, I've seen it hard.
Whats even more clever is that i've never even played or heard the music in Shovel Knight and i recognised where the music was from immediately after seeing your comment.
Depends on the game. If it's a freemium game it's almost guaranteed to be bad, but the paid games I've played GTA, Civ 2 and 6 are decent. Two freemium games that are decent: RuneScape and Albion Online.

I can confirm that shovelware and greedy monetization have driven me from the mobile gaming market entirely. I don't even bother looking at mobile games anymore - years of going back hoping things had improved has taught me better. I spend a good bit of cash on games every year and will as long as I am able... But nobody on mobile is getting a cent. Except for Nintendo Switch devs... That thing is freaking great.

I learned from a young age that existing franchise based games were usually crap, even though most of the licensed games I actually played were actually really good: the Lego Starwars games, the THQ nickelodeon games, and even Stuart Little 2 was really great. Regardless, the logic led me to getting some pretty great underappreciated games like "Zapper" and "The Adventures of Cookie and Cream" and even the appreciated classics like "Jak and Daxter" and the Sly games.

I was born in 95, and growing up I was given a Gamecube. There were like three games I remember from those days: Ice Age, Over the Hedge, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. Ice Age (metacritic: 67) and Over the Hedge (metacritic: 61) were passable at best, I haven't played them in so long, so I can't say I have an opinion. But Hot Pursuit 2 was enthralling. But eventually I lost interest, and I went for several years not playing any games until 2011 when my friends got me into Minecraft, which I played exclusively for about 2-3 years until I started trying other games. That's when I became fascinated with games as a media. And now I have finished several dozen different games... I couldn't even quantify it for you. So yes, if my only introduction to games had been those first Gamecube games, I would have never gotten into gaming in any sort of serious way. Thankfully, I had awesome friends and the internet.

I wish there were more sources for mobile game reviews, or a curated app store for them. Right now mobile games are a bit of a gamble weather they're good, fun games or rushed micro transaction boxes.
I worked on one such project for one month as an internship (I was getting paid). One day the owner, in the middle of the office , in a fit of rage (I couldn't stick to his unrealistic timeline, 1 android game every 5 days in unity) Let me know that I was not good enough and he a non developer could do a better job. I was in tears (Not then and there, later when i was own my own). My best friend consoled me though over the phone. Even though It's been some years now, That day I won’t forget.
Those guys must think we’re stupid. I think in Japan, quality control rules are stricter than in America. That’s why a lot of games produced in Japan (including licensed titles, lots of anime-style or based off games sadly some exclusive there but a lot of them) are so great. Japan doesn’t seem to put in strict deadlines or wants it on shelves as soon as possible regardless of condition of the game, they actually care about quality. Publishers should be punished for putting out garbage or quote-on-quote: “cash grabs”. That consequence is......... Negative Reviews or Reputation Damaging! Losing Money or maybe poor sales because no one wants that shit! Take responsibility! Care about quality! Let’s punish those publishers! Let’s invent a PayBot and everything can go a person or company’s way! (If it’s to amaze, not to disappoint) Thank god the trend is like almost completely dead in the console and PC industry! I wish I could say the same for mobile games. Too much freeware (all countries are suffering from greed) and too much paywalls! Put an end to that practice! Shovelware is the greatest offense to the gaming industry as a whole and needs to be stopped! Punish greedy companies and award hard-working quality-assuring companies who put real effort and time into it! Quality reigns supreme!!!
They never listened, and they even lowered the standards so everybody is making shovelware. AAA industry is now brutally beaten by indie developers for large... $15 game is now much more fun than $60 games in general, which is a shame for the whole industry somehow.
Im glad my parents grew up as gamers and know what is shovelware games. For my cousins on the other hand... they have a lot of Wii Shovelware. Talking about Wii shovelware.... It is 2018.... i still see Wii games on the store shelves. The shovelware ones at least.
Oli Olive I had a Wii too while growing up. Luckily my family had great history on video games, thus they kept me away from most of the shovelware that plagued the platform.
Here is another piece of shovelware: War Robots. In the catastrophic update that happened about a year ago, three new robots were introduced. These three robots broke the old meta instantly. These 200$(yes, I am not joking) robots could fulfill every combat role and were capable of doing so better than any other robot in the game. People of course began to buy these robots. There was no good way of getting them otherwise back then, making the game nearly unplayable. They earned a lot of money, so they of course they hired more devs to pump out content faster. So, after a short period of time, they released a new 100$ weapon that broke the meta once more. Players complained and complained. At last, they made these weapons and robots available to non-payers, but it took a long time to obtain the new items. As more and more stuff was purchased, they began pumping out content faster and faster. They completely ignored players on the test server, as they only saw money. Test servers used to excite players, but nowadays, it just worries the player base. They regularly pumped out unbalanced weapons to get more money. At some point, they got so much money they began sponsoring youtubers in an effort to advertise the game to get more players, thus meaning more money. They realized that few were actually buying the items, so they made a propaganda. They said that they would decrease the item cost and make stuff easier to obtain at the penalty of higher upgrading costs and longer upgrading times. When the patch hit, very few items lived up to the propaganda, and the massively increased upgrade times and cost came with a hidden silver and WR royale token nerf, so it would be a absolute nightmare to upgrade it. They got a few panicked buys from it, and they considered it to be worth it. They made many new year promises. Only a few of them have been fulfilled. They used to censor players complaining about the game to hide its true nature, but they stopped as they knew that they can’t really do much to stop it. Some time later, the players got to know that the old company actually sold the game to mail.ru. They simply developed the game under the mask of the former company. The old company saw the catastrophy unfold, and decided to make a similar game with better everything. They went under a new name, namely “RED BUTTON” (all capital, no quotation marks). The new game is called “battle of titans”, If you would like to play it. So far the new game is far from throwing War robots off its throne. But it will happen eventually. Mail.ru figured it out, and is now stealing features from the new game to add onto War Robots. They really don’t want their biggest income to dissipate.
There are also those games that are intended to look like another game that is good so dumb kids will download them or unknowing parents will get them for their kids.
Most licensed games are shovelware except for these ones Simpsons hit and run Spiderman Goldeneye 007 Any of the star wars games The Arkam batman series Toy story 3
3:50 I love how you take the time to portray every sort of person. Vitaligo gets very little recognition and its gratifying to see such a nonchalant inclusion of it here.
You know, when I first watched this video I said to myself, "Hey that was a pretty good episode, I really like that outro music" and little did I know then, but this episode was my first taste of my favorite video to date, SHOVEL KNIGHT, so as I rewatched this video and heard the outro music, all the memories came flooding back. Along with the realization of the outro music, and all I can say to that is: I really DIG the outro music, it just SPADE my day.
I've downloaded and tried probably dozens of mobile games, but I only ended up keeping 3 of them. Mostly the ones that didn't smash adds down your throat at every opportunity.
Meanwhile, I've probably downloaded thousands of games, I've only kept a dozen or two. Cell Lab, Hoplite, Minecraft, Age of History 2, SwordandGlory, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Antiyoy and Spaceflight simulator
Literally every "Minecraft" game that isn't the basic Java/Bedrock games. Dungeons, Earth, you name it. Shovelware. Quite polished, but disgustingly soulless, and entirely riding the wave of something greater without deserving any of the praise.
@Freesmart Roblox doesn't allow people to make games based off of copyrighted things, (Like Pokemon.), And the games on the platform are made by the players, So not really.
+Catty Mintgum steam is full of shovel ware so is wii so was the NES, IP buying works sometimes, should Nintendo buy Sonic team then it would be in good hands with plenty of resources that can be utilized.shovelware the opposite of this is Sega and gearbox with Aliens colonial Marines
I feel like shovelware has gotten even worse over the years. Many of them feel like someone copy and pasted the games with a simple reskin and just called it a new game.
0:39 I know it's like four years after this video came out, but I really love the Derpware box. Reminds me a lot of Gir. It's not stupid, it's advanced.
This is so true. My mom bought her first game a few years back and it was some wii Harry potter game. Of course it was awful. I had to explain to her that pretty much any game based on a movie is going to be garbage. I never really thought about why until I watched this. (Of course there are always exceptions. I do remember a kick butt 007 game for the 64 back in the day)
Thats exactly why I hated mobile games for a long time. However lately I managed to find quality content there. Yeah maybe its like 0.0000001%, but its there.
Shovelware (and copycat games) is the biggest pain in the ass in the mobile market. Especially when I want to play a racing game. It’s gotten to the point that there isn’t anything much worth playing on mobile platforms now.
The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings games were some of the few that I thought maintained the quality AND aesthetic of their respective movies and books.
Mobile used to be good. Recently it has been shit. I'd appreciate a video on why this is. It seems to be some strategy to create many low quality, highly advertised games.
Games like the warriors, toy story 2, ice age 2 the meltdown, evil dead fist full of boomstick/regeneration, scooby doo night of 100 frights, spongebob the movie game, jurassic park operation genesis, I don't think the movie/spin off games like this will be made as good as they used to be sadly
shovelware gives console libraries longevity. shovelware is the reason i still emulate and play so many weird and obscure ps2 and wii games. I'd have very little interest in those consoles if they didn't have vast libraries to explore. most of them are duds, sure, but a lot of them are so-bad-its-good, or at least have an interesting gimmick. Once in a while there's a "shovelware" game that I actually would consider a really good, underappreciated game.
I've learned to never buy a game that is based after anything on T.V. They always suck. =/ I remember playing a Harry Potter game that you could get half-way through until you had to face Snape in a duel that was absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to beat. You could never have the reflexes fast enough to beat him. Besides that, it was incredibly repetitive with poor graphics.
From my experience informing peers works about 30% of the time. Because the typical response is "It can't be that bad and besides its only $1" and they keep ignoring me.
It is quite true that you don't lose much if 1 dollar game is shitty. The worse thing is, that if enough people buy a shitty product, even at that low price, they will be able to put out more shit. People should think further than "do I care if I spend 1 dollar on bullshit".
Its unfortunately the same as the "my vote wont affect anything" mentality where people assume they're the ONLY one who thinks that and doesn't consider the MILLIONS of others who think that too.
Funny, when I hear. "Informing peers." It usually means friends and family. You have to have a position of power or great oratory skills to actually give advice to common individuals and have it respected.
30% of the time is more then 0% of the time =D And on the side note. I don't vote for votings sake. If there are two politicians running, and I don't like or dislike either of them, I don't vote.
Daniel Brinkerhoff There's alot more to it than not voting. People will vote for the politicians you don't like. It's important to keep people accountable. The real movers and shakers in the world are the people, and if the people want to destroy their world, they'll do it, unless the people can stop them.
The bubble is about to pop! I think the mobile game industry will deflate soon. So much garbage on the app store -- it's hard to find anything of quality.
Shovelware will never entirely disappear, because it will morph into the types you displayed at one point: rip-off titles (and types) of good games. Like any variation on "candy" and "crush". But, ya - far fewer actual licenses on actual crap.
Yeah Pixel Gun 3D for Mobile is some pretty popular shovelware. You often see players running around with the weapons that require the least skill to use, such as a 1shot sniper rifle while I usually run a laser bow that I can get the cheeky ricochet kills with.
Watching this today is intressting, becouse... I mean look at the mobile market! I remember a time where I could look at the top 100 games in the google play store and there would be such good games. Today is just a load of nothing, just companys making games just to be 10 min of fun.
This is why I always *waited* and _cough cough_ tried the game via _other_ sources. I also learned at an early age to _ignore_ anything that was attached to a movie.

it's funny because that game is DEFINITELY not shovel ware

Somehow I knew they'd use _Shovel Knight_.
The irony is that these descriptions of Shovelware apply completely to many games today made by developer's own titles

@John Doe At that time. I really thought I was being incompetent and it was my fault. Today I know better though.

I see what you did there...
Episode about Shovelware ends with a Shovel Knight soundtrack. I see what you did there.
0:22 This illustration is just perfect.
RAID SHADOW LEGENDS is a license free shovel wear
That's more of a Genre based shovelware rather than licensed based.
If only he knew then how true the statement that "Shovelware might be causing more damage" is. Gosh the intense foreshadowing. AAA industry anyone?
Charles Campuz I had a Wii too, and never had WiiWare bought for me
Shovel knight music in the outro
Shovelware
Puns am i right
4:17 You mention the PS1/2 over the Wii? Do you even remember how much garbage was published on Wii?
The ds was also flooded with crap not even the dsi only having 5 physical games was not safe
K1naku5ana3R1ka dude I actually got a used Wii recently and all the games that I have looked at and played are garbage except for a handful of gems.
Bleubroze xb360 had some dumpster fire indies
Shovelware ironically is not what shovel knight is...
+Jack Briggs I was really expecting a Shovel Knight joke in here.
War robots is good!!!!!!
There are also those games that are intended to look like another game that is good so dumb kids will download them or unknowing parents will get them for their kids.
Please don't make bad things so cute. The shovel is so cute, it makes it hard to think of it as bad.

Simpsons hit and run
Spiderman
Goldeneye 007
Any of the star wars games
The Arkam batman series
Toy story 3
I dunno, Star Wars Battlefront 2 came pretty close.
Any lego games, cars 2,
_Kingdom Hearts_ (at least the original) I feel technically counts, depending on context
Smash bros technically
3:50 I love how you take the time to portray every sort of person. Vitaligo gets very little recognition and its gratifying to see such a nonchalant inclusion of it here.
darkshard117 I’m not gonna lie, I thought he was dirty because of the “shovel ware”.
the thing that is worse than shovelware based on upcoming movies is shovelware based on upcoming games.
You can't tell me you don't want to play frasier backyard wrestling
You know, when I first watched this video I said to myself, "Hey that was a pretty good episode, I really like that outro music" and little did I know then, but this episode was my first taste of my favorite video to date, SHOVEL KNIGHT, so as I rewatched this video and heard the outro music, all the memories came flooding back. Along with the realization of the outro music, and all I can say to that is: I really DIG the outro music, it just SPADE my day.
The shovel knight music at the end got me
WHY IS EVERYONE GETTING RECOMMENDED THIS IN 2020?

For Android users, they still have to deal with this.

@@granwythhewleberry4282 Yes we do..
I've downloaded and tried probably dozens of mobile games, but I only ended up keeping 3 of them. Mostly the ones that didn't smash adds down your throat at every opportunity.
Meanwhile, I've probably downloaded thousands of games, I've only kept a dozen or two. Cell Lab, Hoplite, Minecraft, Age of History 2, SwordandGlory, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Antiyoy and Spaceflight simulator
i download maybe hundreds of games, yet i kept three..
the most expected one is roblox (ofc imao) but the least expected ones are doom 1 and 2
shovel knight soundtrack? On a video about shovelware...GENIUS
Literally every "Minecraft" game that isn't the basic Java/Bedrock games.
Dungeons, Earth, you name it. Shovelware. Quite polished, but disgustingly soulless, and entirely riding the wave of something greater without deserving any of the praise.
Does education edition count? Cause its free. At least for the individual student.
@Freesmart Roblox doesn't allow people to make games based off of copyrighted things, (Like Pokemon.), And the games on the platform are made by the players, So not really.
@Freesmart no lol
man why the hell do i enjoy dungeons so much.....
mayb bc i play with ma siblings or its very addicting af
I hope the mobile shovel knight game won't be shovelware
Don't worry
We will only be able to play as king knight
*sniff, sniff* I smell a pun
I really like that Shovel Knight remix... oh, I get it now!
You made the little Shovelware character in the thumbnail image entirely too cute
For the record, I would absolutely play Frasier: Backyard Wrestling.
And this is why Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom gets a remake, unlike most movie/show licensed games.
And today, three years later, we have mobile shovel games from AAA games. I am looking at you FFXV!!!
"Did somebody order terrible?" -Scott the Woz
I still consider Sonic Boom Shovelware.
+Catty Mintgum Well, it is based on a TV series, so...
***** its clear that whether Sega likes it or not, Sonic boom needs as much polish as classic Sonic.
***** that's what I meant, don't give it to a LJN or a bad dev. and instead polish it up, Nintendo wont release a game if it is not up to par.
+Catty Mintgum it is
I feel like shovelware has gotten even worse over the years. Many of them feel like someone copy and pasted the games with a simple reskin and just called it a new game.
0:39 I know it's like four years after this video came out, but I really love the Derpware box. Reminds me a lot of Gir. It's not stupid, it's advanced.
Will there ever be a Derpware plush?
Hit the nail as to why so many mobile games are a rip off like clash of clans and Vega conflict
Not to mention the seemingly *_endless_* supply of match 3 games...
@1:35
I would play Frasier Backyard Wrestling.
Who wouldn't?
Ok, but I would play Frasier Backyard Wrestling.
Who remembers parents bringing home terrible games for Christmas and ur just disappointed but gotta look happy about it.
90% of humble bundle titles are shovelware.
This is so true. My mom bought her first game a few years back and it was some wii Harry potter game. Of course it was awful. I had to explain to her that pretty much any game based on a movie is going to be garbage. I never really thought about why until I watched this.
(Of course there are always exceptions. I do remember a kick butt 007 game for the 64 back in the day)
Goldeneye?
Thats exactly why I hated mobile games for a long time. However lately I managed to find quality content there. Yeah maybe its like 0.0000001%, but its there.
Could you please name some?
@@matt92hun Candies 'n curses is a good platformer that feels like a full game. Good luck!

Shovelware (and copycat games) is the biggest pain in the ass in the mobile market. Especially when I want to play a racing game. It’s gotten to the point that there isn’t anything much worth playing on mobile platforms now.
I will defend Barbie Secret Agent on my honor, that game was dope
The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings games were some of the few that I thought maintained the quality AND aesthetic of their respective movies and books.
Mobile used to be good. Recently it has been shit. I'd appreciate a video on why this is. It seems to be some strategy to create many low quality, highly advertised games.
I agree soooooooo much.
If you mean by recent the last decade, I agree. For the most part post freemium mobile sector has been utter shite.
Raid shadow legends cough cough
I think that Apple Arcade(mostly indie) thing is the beginning to see more quality mobile games again and less crapware
Games like the warriors, toy story 2, ice age 2 the meltdown, evil dead fist full of boomstick/regeneration, scooby doo night of 100 frights, spongebob the movie game, jurassic park operation genesis, I don't think the movie/spin off games like this will be made as good as they used to be sadly
that's why we only play indie-developed games here
shovelware gives console libraries longevity. shovelware is the reason i still emulate and play so many weird and obscure ps2 and wii games.
Like Mercury meltdown madness for the Wii?
30% of the time is more then 0% of the time =D
And on the side note. I don't vote for votings sake. If there are two politicians running, and I don't like or dislike either of them, I don't vote.
Daniel Brinkerhoff
There's alot more to it than not voting.
Yep. Made that mistake years ago by getting Dragon story. It's basically a Dragonvale rip-off.
Weird how Pokemon started acting this way.
The biggest supply of shovel ware in recent years was probably the DS/Wii
Matoro Rocks I don't think so, if we include moblie, otherwise yeah, I'd say the Wii specifically
With consoles at least
Matoro Rocks absolutely
Probably because the wii had an online shop and therefore doesn't need a physical release so no hassle for retailers or something
@@curlminion Pheonix Games is 1 of the worst shovelware companies.

Getting an ad to a Star Wars gacha game on this video is the peak of irony
EA and Activision, we're looking at you.
Heh, Shovelware episode ends with Shovelknight music. Clever.
Shovelware will never entirely disappear, because it will morph into the types you displayed at one point: rip-off titles (and types) of good games. Like any variation on "candy" and "crush". But, ya - far fewer actual licenses on actual crap.
Is it just me or does the shovelware case look adorable
The Shovel Knight music in the outro is a nice touch. I guess you could call that game... "Shovel-Ware."
Technically the truth
0:22 that has to be one of, if not, the best pun they've had on this show
Yeah Pixel Gun 3D for Mobile is some pretty popular shovelware. You often see players running around with the weapons that require the least skill to use, such as a 1shot sniper rifle while I usually run a laser bow that I can get the cheeky ricochet kills with.
it’s more of a pay to win game than shovelware. That game had effort put into it
5 years later and this is still a problem
Watching this today is intressting, becouse... I mean look at the mobile market! I remember a time where I could look at the top 100 games in the google play store and there would be such good games. Today is just a load of nothing, just companys making games just to be 10 min of fun.
Man I miss the days of Angry Birds.
Fruit ninja was my favorite

Ya know, it's fucking terrible when I can immediately name off 14 different games that are nothing but shovelware
