The Blacksmith Song

- A while back I discovered a beautiful poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1840. This poem was titled “The Village Blacksmith”. The spirit behind the words was so inspiring that I decided that it needed to be sung and put to music. In reality, the poem is a bit longer, but I have made minor adaptations to fit it to music. Hope y’all enjoy! If you’re a fellow blacksmith who plays an instrument, lemme hear your renditions!
The short film included was taken by Peter Vogt in 1965. It documents the handmade production of axes in the Oakland, Maine blacksmith shop of Emerson Stevens.

Watching that old blacksmith light his pipe from the axe he was forging made me chuckle. Because it would be something I would likely do.
I remember watching a man at a local park blacksmith once, and he lit a cigarette by pulling out a piece of charcoal with his tongs and lifted it up to his lips to light it one handed, and I asked would it burn his face, and he said “I’m more concerned with the lung cancer than the burn”

“Pioneer Axe” is the title of the documentary (here on RUclips) about the blacksmith shop that had most of the power hammers, grinding tools powered by water.
Visited the site, only the ruins remain next to the Messalonskee Stream, Oakland, Maine.

What an amazing poem turned into a song. An awesome video to go along with it.
Great video. Loved watching those guys work. They must have been deaf though. Haha. Great song too. 🙌🏻
If you don't mind I'd like your permission to share this with my smithing teacher and the rest of the pupils at my next class in a weeks time. I'm pretty sure none of them have heard it before, but they would appreciate it as nothing like it has been played during our lessons before.
that man is the BOSS right there...not even Popeye could light his pipe off the hot glow of forged steal
I love the blacksmiths
