  • The word wreath is derived from the Old English "writhan", meaning "to twist." Utilized over time in many ways by different cultures, wreaths are thought to date back to Ancient Greece and Egypt. In the Persian Empire, wreaths, called diadems, were used as headdresses to reflect power and authority.
Over time wreath designs were adopted by many cultures to display symbolic meaning. The circular shape of wreaths, for example, is said to symbolize the seasonality of nature and eternal life.
Wreaths (seen here) are made at the museum for Candlelight Stroll with ingredients that are grown in the historical gardens.
