Part 1: • John Amos Going to Bea...
In this clip, John Amos opens up about the current state of television and how he doesn't foresee things going back to family programming like when he was on Good Times. He went on to speak about having some contention with the way JJ's comic relief played out on the show, which John explained he disagreed with many times. John also revealed that he moved to Liberia after being fired from Good Times and how his character was killed off of the show, which you can hear more about above.
John Amos is a legend, I'm glad he's still wit us
I hope to meet him one day🙏🏽✊🏽
Preach
I still watched Good Times after he was killed off, but it was never the same.
smoke dogg Sure wasn’t
We all did but didn't like it as much with him gone
It actually harder to watch without him for me
Wasn't funny any longer
Porsha Godbold STOPPED.
"500 channels with nothing on most of them." Ain't that the daggone truth!
TRUTH
He will ALWAYS be the owner of the MOST PROMINENT BLACK OWNED FAST FOOD FRANCHISE McDowels
"McDonald's has the golden arches, here at McDowell's we have the golden arcs" 😆😆
Cpl Current awesome 😂😂😂
@KzFive Alive that's dope.

I hope one day soon they will give him his flowers while he's still here he needs to be honored by our community true representation of a strong black man! ✊🏿
Real talk.
Reminds me of my Father... Maa'shaa Allah...

Straight up!!!!
I agree. Give him his flowers while he's here. People need to do more of this period.
John Amos Is Legendary....Makes You Feel Like Your Father Is Talking To You 🤝🏽💯
Go Reala yup
Exactly, his presence as a father is what made Good times funny not JJ.....the first 2 seasons were comedy gold.
No it doesn't
He was America’s dad before Cosby no matter you black white or Mexican
James Evans was my favorite TV Father ever!!! He played that role with heart and toughness
Omg .....reading some of these comments has been so refresh'n.....I thought I was the only person that absolutely Hated the episodes with Thelma's husband (Keith)!!!!!! He was over the top corney
I can respect your opinion as far as you feel that Keith was over-the-top corny... however the episodes after James died were some of the better ones all the episodes with Penny, JJ and Michael going through their thing, and eventually all of them leaving the ghetto together... the episodes with James were classic don't get me wrong... but the episodes after he died were just as good and memorable as well
Definitely
Him and JJ together, two cornballs was wayyyy too much!!!
Season 4 5 6 was the worst ever stories was over the top no male figure jj was toofunny not serious
Agreed. That actor had nothing to offer. Not sure why they cast him. Also, no on screen chemistry between him and Thelma.
Don't cap when Florida threw the bowl down and said "damn damnnnn damnnnnnn" we all feel that same way when someone close to us die that's an iconic scene
I was so young when i saw that i started laughing and went to school the next day saying "damn, damn, daaaaaamn"! Lol. Everybody at school knew what that was. All surprised we never heard bad words in the evans house. It was like "ooooooooooow".
That was true acting. That scene almost brings a tear to my eye each time I see it.
Yea she was trying to keep her composure but that death weight was heavy for her
@@checkmateforever Made us feel it, didn't she? That was the worst thing the network did to us at that time. They seemed like such a loving couple.
"Now, James, vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord."
"I'm just tryin' to do the Lord's work, baby."
Remember it well even thou I was only about 7 yrs old at the time. Such a good show, but better before he left. Always loved him.
I loved him in "Coming To America" with Eddie Murphy...
And reunited with Madge Sinclair from their "Roots" roles.
@@wudaddy Amen..
@truth hurts what is you talking about, small breed?
I only watch seasons 1-3 and just a few episodes from the other seasons. It just wasn’t the same without John Amos. RIP Esther Rolle 👑
The worst mistake they ever made
💯💯👏☝️👌 and adding ray j. to moesha,
Omg 😳 I hollered 😂😂😂 right the show went downhill after adding him lmao 😂
Jeremy White I just hollered LAWD that was one of my favorite parts when he would do that especially the family gun episode when he told Florida that’s not how you look for a gun talking about what you doing playing this is the way we fold our clothes 😂😂😂
They knew what they were doing
2 u. He said, he liked it.
When James whooped the bully that was taken Michael's lunch money and Michael invited him to stay the weekend! Classic!! The bully looks like he could be Lil Duval's father😂
Aaron Cushinberry That lil nigga looked gay AF, thought he was too. Gtfo! 🤣🤣🤣
Wu-Blood Kin He had a nice ass too
@Jihad Da God no he isn't
watchin that episode right now😀😂
Vlad teach lunelle how to be quiet and let people talk if she’s going to be doing this more often
Mark Jackson vlad has to learn that first
...she's annoying.
That's exactly what I was thinking glad someone noticed that
It's funny how as long as Florida was a supporting character on Maude, where her life wasn't the main focus, she was married to a firefighter named Henry. They give her a spinoff where Florida's life is the main focus, Esther Rolle has to fight for Florida to even HAVE a husband at all, and when they agree, all of a sudden firefighting Henry is now 6th grade dropout James, who not only can't find a decent job, but keeps getting laid off the shitty jobs he COULD find. I still think to this day Norman Lear hired John Amos with every intention of eventually killing James off, bc he never wanted Florida to have a husband on Good Times.
Social programming
I respect this man so much. He’s a precious dear man, I believe with integrity. God bless him.
I've always loved and admired John Amos! Each time I watched 'Good Times' on TV, I looked forward to seeing him! That's why I'm glad I purchased all of the show.
I got into Watching Good Times when I got older, once they killed that character, after a while the show started to change and it kept getting worst and worst. Even when they put in Janet Jackson who had some good episode. I thought the show got really bad once they introduce Thelma's husband onto the show...just didn't feel right
@Tkay DaSav when they had Florida marry that Dixon character I was confuse due to how her character was originally written and thought it was odd for that character to hook up with Dixon.
@@blackrock316 Facts she wouldve never moved on from james or kids
basically sounds like they're talking about the business killing the Artistry of it all.
@Angel Johnson I was commenting on their view on how TV is today and will it change.
When that happened on the show it was a Bad Time 😔
🌽🌽🌽🌽😑
Yo chill 😆
*Is that Luenell interviewing John Amos!!!!!* 😁👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Right!? 😍
She was Florida on Good Times.
@@dirty.dan.69 alright funny guy!
Worst interview
Luenell is the worst interviewer EVER!!
Still a classy and humble dude what an exceptional actor and person.
Show was trash after James left.
💯💯👏☝️👌 like Moesha, when Brandy and her mom added Ray J. in. they both really need to stop trying to get him work and be seen especially the mom.
Agree 💯
Yeah. They needed the whole family. It wouldn't have been good without JJ either.
@@nme.00104 why u hating on d-money lmao
Absolutely true your words
So John went to Africa after Hollywood before Dave Chappelle did.
seems like there were generations of people before this one
@Pason Jayne 💀💀
Pason Jayne calm down pason
To Liberia no less.
If I can remember, James turned down the job in Alaska, I think he was killed in Mississippi
It was Mississippi because the family was packing up to move there.
Nestafan2that’s why I don’t understand how could he not know . He’d fail at a Good Times quiz show
Definitely.. As a kid that's how I learned how to spell Mississippi.. M.. I.. Crooked letter.. Crooked letter.. I... Humpback Humpback I..
Xanda Tonge I’m done😂...good times taught more kids to spell Mississippi then the public school system .
xfiler2013 I know this is off topic , but an interring thing about John Amos that I forgot to mention in the whole interview is that back in the early 90’s when the head of the Gambino family John Gotti was on trial for murder and racketeering, the mob Obviously hired people to cheer him on during the trial outside the court room . One of those celebrities most likely paid to cheer was John Amos . He went on camera and said John Gotti was a great man . I always looked at him sideways after that
🤔
Damn, Damn, Damn!!! (Florida Evans voice)
Damn I was 3 minutes too late hahaha
John has a great demeanor. Salute to the Legend.
Vlad : Luenell, ask him about Eminem.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂🤣🤣
Eye knew that was her 💪🏿😂
Lol right
Byron Kennedy Lmao
He's memorable in every role Good Times, Coming to America, Roots. I liked when he played Tommy's father on Martin. Hilarious!
That side eye: "say what?" 👀😂
Good times was recorded on tape before a live audience !
He is awesome and timeless..enjoyed this interview..
James went to Mississippi not Alaska, because the family was getting ready to move back to Mississippi. Cause remember on the show that's where James and Florida were originally from.
Yes, what in the world was he talking about going to Alaska!
@@reginaldhoward4198, John Amos is getting older in age, but the interviewer should have had his facts straight. Alaska was an earlier episode.
He did more more than good times. Talked about die hard, player club, the world greatest athlete...
Thank you so much for your work and passion. Love John Amos in Beastmaster as a kid and everything he been in . He played the absolute best father in TV history , hands down the GOAT of fathers and what a great man in his life ,wow
John also was in a Dr. Dre video. I’m sure most people don’t remember.

Yup the Same with Uncle Phil James Avery & Jhon amos was on the fresh prince when the both of them gotten into a Good fight period..
He was literally my TV dad. As a fatherless child growing up in Harlem- I loved ❤ his character. It was devastating when his character was killed off and even worst finding out as an adult that “progress” was the reason.
Y’all rushed through his pre Good Times career. Would’ve been good to hear how he got his first TV role. You could tell he wanted to speak on it. Can’t believe y’all skipped over him as Kansas City Mack in Let’s Do It Again. He was on Sanford and Son before Good Times. Maud. We could let it slide because this is Luenell first time, she don’t have the experience to slow walk through ever beat of their life. And Luenell is dope. Hopefully they go into his Kunta Kente role in depth
Florida Evans was on Maud for 3 years and James Evans was Henry Evans but still played by John Amos. Would’ve been good to hear about that

Facts!, Excellent memory!,
Gordy the weather man on Mary Tyler Moore
Now theses are the questions people want to here from from the legendary Mr Evans 👍🏾
Even though the James Evans character was not an educated man, he had a lot of common sense and natural intelligence. In real life, John Amos graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in sociology. He was also a Golden Gloves boxing champion after college. Very talented man. God bless you, Mr. Amos. 😊😊 🙏 🙏
To the black women who don't have a father......this is how they're supposed to be.
Women dont want a man like this. A man like this comes with respect accountability responsibilities etc. Everything about guys like this screams toxic masculinity in this era.
Jordan Bryant speak for the women you choose to be around that would be like me saying all men ain’t shit it’s a unfair judgement of all men when we CHOOSE the people we get into relationships with and surround ourselves with
Jordan Bryant you missed what he was saying dumbass
Jordan Bryant blah blah blah
@@jordanbryant5035 💯💯💯
He had supposedly gotten a job in Mississippi, Not Alaska.
great point, but I suppose when a person gets unceremoniously fired from a job, that person would likely not give a crap about being detail-oriented about their firing.
I'm 41 and found this show on classic TV. I remember Florida from Maude and heard about this show love it.
J.J had the energy of 2 people in one body on the show like pookie from New Jack City LOL 🤣
Right! JJ was the reason a lot of people watched the show.
Oh wow, never knew all. I love him even more now.. For standing up for what he believed in!!
Such a well spoken man.
I grew up on Good Times and several years later when I had my son and was up at 2am nursing, that show kept me company 😆
Lunelle should not be interviewing anybody. She's all over the place. Amos has told this story many times so thankfully, I didn't miss anything. John even looked confused by her actions.
Over 500 channels with repetition of the same stuff, very, very true. Sometimes you gotta get off the cable /internet and just live
I absolutely loved him on good times. I was a kid and he scared the hell outta me when he got on JJ. Haha. He was a tough presence and I loved him on the show. He was great and it made everything fall into place.
He was brilliant on Mary Tyler Moore, as well, as Gordy Howard. Every episode/scene that included him was 100x better for it.
OMG! He’s still alive!!! #roots
He and Michael Landon were like 2nd fathers to me. God bless both, in heaven and John, here in the world of light! Role model fathers!
John Amos is the father we all were desperate to have
Sounds like that’s Florida interviewing James 🤔
I believe it's luenell the comedian
I love John Amos he will always be James Evans in my heart ❤️ and I support him with his decision on good times
That show was trash ash after James left
BEST COMMENT EVER!!! SOOOO TRUE! I DON'T WATCH IF HE'S NOT ON THERE!!! 😫😭😵
Not trash but it wasn’t as good anymore, after JJ, James was the next important character. But I would say James played his role of the father better than anybody else played their roles.
Its wasnt good times any more as a kid I say bad times just wasnt tha same without James 😂💯
One of the most memorable tv episodes ever
Greatest tv dad in history ! very intelligent brother . ✊🏽 . Legend
Luenell is interviewing 💞💞💞
If it had been a brotha there would be no hearts, wtf is the deal with u black women
@@BrooklynRival7718 I'm confused in why you are upset about me noticing that Luenell is interviewing on thus channel 🤔🤔🤔. I said nothing about the interview in it's entirety. You are too woke for me 😂😂😂
Bro i dont even watch the episodes after he died...it dont give me that family feeling like when he there.
Same here. I only watched a few episodes in time for me to wean myself off of the show without getting the DT's.
Yeah it wasn't the same when James died 💯
It was bad .Saw him have interviews years before these .Even then he explained that he was only trying to get the writers/producers to possibly include the family moving up in education - such as Michael becoming a surgeon , so the disagreements came to a head .He was right - he knows about a black family more than they do .They forgot - he is black and raised a family .That would have given show new interest .He was ahead of his time .Shows now showing black people with better income and educational standards .All indicates he knew what he was talking about .He was saying the Dynomite line by JJ was indeed getting stale .
@@michaelclayton3114 without them moving up, it was on the Gilligan's Island level.
His passing on the show hurt me! I was sooo sad when they said he died. I didn’t watch it the same after that.
I grew up watching “Good Times” when it went into syndication. I can say it went downhill after he left the show. I still watch it to this day have it DVR and I only watch the first few years that he was on the show. Also he will always be James and Seth from The Beastmaster to me.
Lunell you killin me... please let the man finish a thought!
this interviewer and John Amos are excellent....
This is the type of man when he speaks you just listen 👂🏽 and take notes 📝
Having Lunelle interviewing people on Vlad TV is dope. Lunelle is talented. I'm glad Vlad is linking up with her.
#💪🏾✌🏾❣️
This man is so handsome still young looking😍
Played professional football as he grew up that's how strong he is
His heel turn in Die Hard 2 broke my heart
John was incorrect near the end of this clip, there was an opportunity for James to work on the Pipeline in Alaska, but Florida talked hin out of it.
He was in Mississippi, landed a job, was about to move the whole family to Mississippi, and that was when he was written off of the show which IMO, was a colossal mistake of Norman Lear's..
All of the new characters brought in after James was gone could not fill those shoes...
Good Times was never the same without John Amos.
This guy is a great interview. no agenda and no bullshit.
YEAH. U. GOT. THAT. RIGHT. I LIKE. JOHN. AMOS. HE WAS. A GOOD. ACTOR. ON. THE. SHOW. UMM AND THAN HE. PLAYED. OTHER. SHOWS HES A GOOD. MAN. GOD BLESS U JOHN.
“If I cash in tonight, New York aint gonna shutdown” NY shuts down a month later. And john amos is still here 🙏🏽
People forget, John worked with Norman again on a show called 704 Hauser Street, which was about his tv family moving into the old Bunker's home from All in the Family in the 90s
The Good Times episode when he got killed hurt my feelings as a little kid.
Every time I see John Amos I think of Coming To America .. “ When I say the boy has his on money the boy got his own money”!! 💴
I think he was absolutely the best for that series and great in Roots he is an epic actor I hope he'll get more roles in TV and he looks so good for his age he's ageless
God Bless Every One Who Read This Message 🙏🏿
I believe James got the scripts mixed up. There was an episode where he got a job offer in Alaska, but he was in Mississippi when he was killed off. It was an automobile accident.
I guess he said don't really matter I wasn't in that episode to know the details
Click is the sound my remote control makes every time a non John Amos episode of good times pops up on my tv screen.
It's not that people can't think of new stuff. Often it's a marketing, publicity scenario where if A worked years ago, and the copyright/publishers want more income they allow reproduction, remixing of the old stuff. Plus 360 deals have made such remakes an additional product line.
he was the rock of that show though the characters on the show struggled was impovised he was a stand up dude he worked wasn't a womanizer had out side children was a drug addict or alcoholic didn't abuse his children tried to instill morals and rules and regulations and for the show to do what they did was wrong that kid dynomite antics and buffoonery made the show to be taken seriously no matter the message the show was trying to give it wasn't taken seriously because of the foolishness of Jimmy walkers character God bless John Amos for standing his ground even though it cost him his job he's highly respected
He didn’t really die; he changed his name to McDowell and moved to Queens New York where he opened up a popular restaurant.
I've been watching Sanford & Son the past couple weeks & he was on 1 episode so far. The episode when Lena Horne was coaxed into going to Fred's house.
My Favorite TV Dad! John Amos is the GOAT of TV Fathers! I think James was in Alabama or Mississippi when he got killed though John! I missed you off of the show my friend!
Great example of what a father should be. Tore me up when they killed him off.
It was a sad day when the episode of James dying aired. I can't watch it to this day....it's too sad. I still cry.
He was on a show in 1971 called The Funny Side with the beautiful Teresa Graves. I wish they asked him about her
"I killed off Johns character on Good Times. Both of em had to get got" -TK Kirkland
I almost thought that was Florida interviewing him lol.
Remember when he played a gay dude on two and a half man. That skit was hilarious 😆
Nah I didn't get it
I just watched it. It was not funny
John is very much valued and respected. He embodies everything we as black men should be. The levels of wisdom n integrity are identical to Dick Gregory.
John said that if he'd cash in tonight New York wouldn't shut down; however, he was the hub of Good Times...NY didn't shut down but the show drastically suffered without him.
Lear fired Amos because of his outspokenness. Lear thought that he didn't need Amos and that he could just build the show around J.J. and it would remain successful. But he found out like the rest of us that it was actually James, not J.J., who was the heart of the show. When James died, the show died with him.
I have always liked John Amos and when his character was killed off the show was never the same.
Lunell has a great future in this but she needs to learn when and when not to interrupt.
The job in Alaska was an earlier episode, when he was killed off, he was in Mississippi, and if memory serves, he already had a job, and the family was about to head down there.
This is the part i’ve been waiting on
John Amos looks like an older version of Wesley Snipes in this interview
JOHN AMOS - THE COOLEST 'REAL' BLACK MAN TO BE ON TV!
