--------
In this clip, John Amos spoke about playing in Roots and not originally being cast as Kunta Kinte. He explained that once the script came in for Kunta Kinte, he knew that it would be a huge role for whoever got it, and he detailed how it changed his acting career. John explained that the role cemented him as a dramatic actor after he played on Good Times, and he later added that he was more respected for his role in Roots that the beloved TV sitcom. To hear more, including his short-lived Broadway career, hit the above clip.
I love how he says OUR history not just black history African American history he announces it with passion
John Amos is like that one older man that you never get cross with because hes super fit.
He got that "ol man strenf". He doesn't fight you...you get "corrected"
I was just a kid when 'Roots' was first aired on TV. I must say that it was quite a history lesson.
Saw Amos play Citizen in August Wilson's 'Gem of the Ocean' with Phylicia Rashad at the McCarter Theater in Princeton. Unforgettable. Thanks, Mr. Amos.
Underrated actor
Damn she keep over talking him making him forget what he was about to say. Let this man speak Lunell.
Welcome to VLADTV my friend, where over talking is the norm. #alwaysthisish
Is that why Vlad picked her? Just a thought. ;))
Well I think it's cause he's old and it takes him a minute to remember, ayo she just kind of talks more lol. But vlad didn't do this, because he don't know shit about John Amos
Most women do......
I know right? That was so effin annoying. I hate when people do that.
No problem with luenell doing the interviews she brings a different feel then vlad but son. Let my mans finish answering ya damn question before interrupting him.
Cantrice Hart shes bad
Perfect comment...thought it was just me
@Space1TV .!. I like her interview
Officer vlad recruiting aunty luenell
She is awful at interviewing!! She wants to show how smart she is but sounding annoying!! Let him talk Luenell PLEASE🙏🏾
“ROOTS” a generational movie/show I will continue to watch every year and show my kids n their kids and teach them even more about themselves and the truth over the lies they might be told
dont just teach them about a their history of being enslaved.. strive ta be indigenous and dependent on the earth itself and not this colonial institution.. we need roots to ancestoral culture and knowledge as an indigenous inhabitent.. if we cant livve on our own accord then we have nothin tu teach our kids except go along and continue to be captive for generations...
@Pavor yall are our enemies of course we hate u.
Pavor you sound stupid look at what white people european and American have treated black people for the last 1,600 years , you want black people turn the other cheek ? And 2nd black cannot be racist !
Savannah Peters and it was plagiarized
I love roots but you know the man who wrote it lied and stole his work from another black lady but it's still great but brotha made up the whole thing but those things were really going on
This man is. CLASS ACT! Always have loved him!!❤️🔥🙏🏼
When lunnell said damn at 1:24 I could not stop laughing 😂 😂😂😂🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂 yeah it was hilarious!! She ghetto as hell! I love her!
That shit was hilarious 😂😂😂
DAUM!
Followed by that “whaatt” 😂😂😂😂😂
That sounded like my Daddy when he ran out of gas on Crenshaw
Roots came on Sundance network last week I watch it every year! It's a whole day long from young Kunta to Alex Murray Palmer Hayley!
John Amo's role in Roots will make him immortal. The man will never be forgotten.
He's the father that black men never had. James Evans 💪🏽
*some
You can't call him Dumb my dad Was Strong But James Evans Backed the Black Mob Down on more than one occasion the average Dad ain't doing that 😂
@@jeremiahwoodsi7545 Thats TV man not real
@@yarahadayar926 yeah that's what he did on the tv show back in the day yeah you right.
In the 70's and previously we were all afraid of our fathers, I know I was.
John Amos looks great. Im so happy he is doing well. 😊
When I heard Lunelle instead of Vlad I was like WTF happened!!!!
The Great Bergamo 😂 LOL
The Great Bergamo me too
RIGHT!!! I clicked on part 3 first. When I heard Lunell I had to stop the video and start from part 1. I don't like watching Vlads interviews until there are at least 7or 8 already up. I hate waiting for the next part of the same interview. But I guess that's how Vlad maximizes his take away from RUclips.
Same here
I love lunelle. John is a king
Maaaan remember when John Amos took off from that damn barn running in the movie 'Roots'??? Shiiiiiiii; Mr. Amos was hel on his feet!
Handsome man to this day. God bless him.
I totally forgot he did Roots. Love this series. Lunelle adds a different flavor to the interview. Like she fanning out at times😊 John Amos will always be James Evans, Jr to me!
James Evans Jr. Was J. J. 's actual name.
He was my tv dad not Cosby. He was America's dad but not the black father. That was James amos
Reminded me of my real dad.. Not all black children grow up without a father. My dad was super strict just like James Evan's. At 19yrs old my dad was still restricting the time of night I could get phone calls. I just recently found out that my then boyfriend, currently my husband called me after 10pm one night and my dad told him that I couldn't have phone calls after 10 and just hung up on him. The funny part is I never knew that conversation happened, never mind I was almost 20yrs old having time restrictions on the phone.
Some black fathers were and are like real life versions of Carl Winslow and that's a good type of father to have.
You have a few hlack fathers who are like real life versions of Cliff Huxtable.
Not everyone is cutout for interviewing....VLAD YOU ARE The Best of the best. i have said this before. Pleasant speaking voice. Clear and concise. !!!!
Great interview LUenell really went deep and bought out things about MrAmos I didn't know about. She is good!!!
Lunell and her commentary got me rolling 😭
"Damn" 1:23
Lmao 4:30 she say it as if it was really him in real life
Fantastic actor
Very talented actor. It's a shame he never made it to superstardom.
He did in my eyes.
Lunell: U didnt go in there cussing anybody out did ya?
ShadowzTV they’re interviewing on a personal level
*I lost it* 😭😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Jerald Goffney no one seems to understand that in the comments. This isn’t an interview this is a conversation between 2 people(not a bad thing) just 1 person telling another a story
😂😂😂
My biological father and I weren't introduced to each other until I was 15 years old. James Evans ( John Amos) was my father until then!!!!! That Character was a Strong Black Father Figure for me and millions of Black Boys and Young Men across the country!!!!! When he played Kunta Kunta in Roots, that was another example of Strong Black, Uncompromising Manhood under the most Inhumane Conditions!!!!! That motivated me to become a Strong Black Man!!!!! May Allah Bless And Keep The Great Man and actor John Amos!!!!! ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Don't forget his role in the players club as a cop 👮he was hilarious😂😂
Never thought I'd miss seeing vlad conduct an interview. Please use Lunell for non-serious people Vlad interviews in the future. I wanted this to be a better interview and she was less than stellar.
This the park we all been waiting for get this man back
I have feeling don cheadle will look like this when his older
Nick James lol
He better hit the gym.
His demeanor is totally different from the characters he play
He was a talented football star!
Lunell doing interviews. I love it
John Amos one Man show in Philly at the Bushfire Theater was Lit!
I'm really enjoying his story, thank you💕
he took up the role of Kunta Kinte so that his daughter could become the Queen of Zamunda
isiano10 Lmao!!
He does't age wow
There is an in-joke in Coming to America where John Amos character flirts with the Queen Mother of Zamunda. She was the wife of John's Kunta Kinte/Toby in Roots
😂😂😂😂
@@coreyfludd357 damn she sure was damn I never made da connection wit her
James Evens is the house hold father figure of America's Ghetto's , Kunta is the father figure from whence we came - thx you Mr. Amos forever in our souls , flowers , flowers , and more flowers too you !
Mr.James Evans !
Norman Lear !
I love you luenell but dammit you should ask a question then wait for a complete response lol. Luenell is still the funniest the most beautiful and the realist lady/ comedian that I’ve seen in a long time.
John Amos was a damn good actor. From serious roles to comedy, he gave it everything he had to make you believe his character was REAL.
John n the blind dude from Star Trek were like the original Kunta’s 👊
That brother's name is Levar Burton.
Not only can he act he was damn near faster than those horses.
This makes vlad sound even better at interviewing
No. It really doesn't. Just Vlad saying "ok, they don't like me, wait till they see this!"
Luenell is not a good interviewer ..she keeps over talking the guest..She owes Mr Amos an apology, he hardly ever gives interviews and she ruined what could have been a great one
A good interviewer will drop the nugget & leave the rest to the guest, she's behaving like it's just them two talking at a social gathering. She ruined the whole interview for me. John Amos as she said in part 1 "we don't feel we know John Amos, we know his characters..." so let us get to know him woman! 🤦🏾♂️
yes it was like Charlie Rose turned up to "11"... she was interviewing herself at times
I can listen 2 Lunell interview anytime.
Kunta the American life simply wasn’t for him he stood for his African roots!
That movie change my life
That movie was a lie. And responsible for the misguided anger blacks in America have pass on to their children.
@@334LIVING how was it a lie..its about slaves
@@334LIVING HOW U GON TELL THE NEXT PERSON ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF THEIR RACE? WIT ALL DUE RESPECT "WE NOT ABOUT TO LET NOBODY REWRITE OUR HISTORY" JOE! ❌
Poor John kept looking around when she would say something inappropriate John looking like am I being Punked🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😳🙄
Lol
I was waiting on this part
Shaddup Lunell. Interview him. Damn
Lunell doing a Great job with the interview hope you do a podcast next
Lunell did a great job💕
Wow. As crazy as Lunell is, she's actually pretty engaging as an interviewer. 🤣
Jitu Kambuka is another highly under rated actor
Let's do it again x uptown Saturday night best movies.
Lunell, let the man speak. It's annoying that you not only cut him off, you tell the story, and you add sound effects which I don't care for.
“You may be as dumb as hog fat but your as strong as an ox “ love roots
In the Lord Jesus Name
Jesus is the Way people!!! If you want to go to heaven you got to go through Him!!!
LOVE JOHN
Lunell is hilarious
Did i come here just for the comments . yes i did
Legend!
He was Toby..
Yep you said it right Program
Dear Future Interviewers,
We are here to hear what the guest has to say not u. Let them speak. Its a reason you are not on camera 🤔🤷🏽♂️
Right...
lol leave auntie lone😂😫
Vlad you got Luenell on the team now aha That’s what’s up 🥂💯
I like how vlad lets other people interview people
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lulu Lulu. 😂 Let him finish boo I hate when ppl do that . Wendy do it too 😒
💪🏾🖤🖤🖤🖤💪🏾💪🏾🌞🌞🌞🌞💪🏾
Lunell is the GOAT. She’s great at everything.
How dare these critics take these peoples hard work & spit on it. It’s terrible that 3 people had say over what people would watch or not watch. Unbelievable.
I loved watching John Amos and Cicely Tyson in Roots. I was so young; I would have nightmares of white men coming into my home to terrorise my family.
ROOTS: THE REAL FACTS. 1. He was not given the name Toby but was called Hoppin George (mabey because of losing his foot?). 2. It was probably not Kunta's daughter sold to another plantation but his granddaughter. 3. Kizzy and the doctor's niece could not have been childhood friends as the niece was a grown woman when Kizzy was born, so it was most likely Kizzy's daughter. 4. There were plenty of black people on plantations who recalled their african origins (sometimes without even knowing it-the jumping the broom custom for example). 5. As a teen, Kunta Kinte was told by a village prophet that he would oneday be world famous.
I though he was great in Roots and u can tell the mark of a great actor when u close your eyes and then open your eyes and all u see is Knute Kinte and not John Amos and u hear the pain and frustration in his voice as he played a slave trying to get free!
Old player black men always got that hat on 😂
I love lunell
By being Awesome. 😎
I used to think John left good times to star in roots
We were already here..do.your research FBA
You ain't no coke lord you are a coke head and don't no where you are at
Had no idea the manager of McDowells was kunta kinte
Your name is Toby....I want to hear you say it!
Hoodmerica's Dad
Luenell is doing a great job. Vlad she is your go to
Damn, I forgot the wrestler from Roots died.
Yes, and I loved his portrayal of a strong man and he also did a guest appearance on Good Times.
So my girl works for Vlad now
Lunnel now working with vlad .... Great replacement ....
Luenell is funny, but please stick to comedy. Not a good interviewer.
It would be nice if she allowed him to speak more often. Being a good interviewer is a gift. 🙄
300+ likes no dislikes. I see nobody want that James Evans ass whooping
After the 4th interruption I couldn't continue to listen any longer.
The owner of Mcdowells!!
Yup. Ive liked him in everything ive seen him in. I havent seen roots though. I have a hard time watching movies with the holocoust or slavery or war in them. I mean i know all of these things are terrible but idk it gets me in the heart too hard if you know what i mean. Anyone else have that problem? Im also weird about certian horror movies although i still wanna see jordan peeles movies.
Who is this woman who keeps talking?
The interviewer is nauseating. Talks and interrupts to much.
Sorry Luenell but u must GO. You interrupts the interviewers too much
Myles Combs Exactly
@Realest Talk U must havent watched all her interviews.
@Realest Talk No she did numerous. And all of them she dont let them finish telling the story
The interviewer keeps cutting him off mid conversation
Amos , showed on 'good times what father figure was ' , a nd I'm mostly a white guy .
Okay, Luenell needs to chill out. Got dammit, Vlad. Stop blowing this
Vlad should of let lunnell practice her skills on a mumble rapper not a legend first
I fell asleep listening to this and in the dream we were on a metro train And in front of me sitting down is Lounl And in front of her is John Can you guys are talking to some passer by who is listening to conversation and nodding While I'm in a back seat closer to the next train department CO signing with a head Bob eating a comic book like a cheeseburger.
