There is only one Judith Durham Magnificent voice is a lovely package - even now. Her voice is still so distinctive I know this is from 1997, I heard a recording earlier this year and it was sheer joy.
Wow...both versions of this song are simply spine-chilling. Excellent work by both the veteran Judith Durham & the original by Annie Haslam of Renaissance. I love them both. But that's because both women were always great. I wish Judith could sing with Annie -- as October Project's Mary Fahl did a few years back at a concert in PA.
Agreed. Although having said that I can think of one other Australian vocalist who might have been able to do it justice: Helen Reddy. And also I'm wondering what Karen Carpenter would have done with it using her chest voice ("basement") rather than her head voice.
Sung by two beautiful female singers and written by one amazing female lyricist, Annie Haslam and Judith Durham and the late Betty Thatcher-Newsinger, music by the late Michael Dunford!!! Glorious song!!! 😊❤👍 Another singer who could do this justice is Moya Brennan, Clannad!!!
Moya Brennan covering this timeless classic? What a great idea that is, as I love 'Clannad's music too. Why don't you go on her official website and suggest that she record the song?
I find difficult to express in words the feelings this magnificent rendition arises. There is a sense of eternity in these images. The group seems timeless, as the faith and love they proclaim through music. Beautiful when young, beautiful as the decades go by, with a voice that defies description, so powerful and perfect it sounds, Judith is a unique messenger of love as seldom seen or heard.
Your good self Kevin and I'm certain a great many others also 'share' their silent tear's over ... ' times spent ' and ' times missed '. Music is so very easily to be relied on for those invisible, but present , in a few notes and a chord , evocations of those missed ... and those that we missed at that very moment of not - asking.
Judith Durham is my all-time favourite female vocalist of any genre. Didn't realise until now that she had covered this song. However (I know this may sound like sacrilege to some) I do prefer the original. Annie Haslam nails it for me. Some beautiful backing harmonies as well toward the end of the Renaissance version. But Judith as always sings beautifully here.
A lovely version - I have been a huge fan of Judith's voice since the Seekers first came to UK. I do prefer Renaissance with Annie Haslam singing though. The visuals on this video may not be appropriate, though. The Northern Lights of the song are not the Aurora Borealis as pictured. Annie Haslam has been quoted as saying that the words refer to the lights of the area of Northern England she left when flying to tour in the US, leaving Roy Wood (with whom she was in a relationship at the time) and N. Eng behind. This was supported by the lyricist for the song, Betty Thatcher-Newsinger, who recounts many conversations with Annie regarding loneliness and separation whilst on tour.
A Jamieson Smile: "Northern Lights" is visually a "Light Show" of the Heavens. It's a "Chorus of heavenly harmonics" with Judith adding her "Signature to the Melodic line & contour". None better! With loving eyes & heart, Jamieson (Peter) A Jamieson Note: It's evident, as part of a rock spiritual, "Northern Lights" would be a powerful & sincere addition to the focus of the "Theme"... (young love matured).
This a great song..... it actually reminds me of something John Denver would have done..... funny they have the same initials and she recorded this in 1997 the same year he died.... strange....
I’ve thought about the similarities with John Denver as well, who I also admire: 1. Same initials 2. Born the same year 3. Both dads were airplane pilots, who they didn’t know very well 4. Her husband was Ron, his brother was Ron 5. Both humble, modest, great people I wish they would have performed together. Not sure why it never happened. He went to Australia many times and surely had heard of the Seekers. I guess no one saw the harmony or attempted to coordinate a duet. It would have been beautiful!
Is it me or did women in the 70s sings O much better and technically 'properly compared to the whiny ,half closed mouth techniques of most women singers today? Anne and Judith have lovely voices!
Totally agree with you. I would add that all singers back then (male and female) had unique distinctions, you could easily tell who was singing without seeing them. That disappeared from the mid-80s onwards. Nowadays they all sound alike....bland, flat in tone, and augmented by electronics. Most of them can't sing in tune without help. I was born in the 1950s and I'm glad I was young at a time when singers and musicians had genuine talent.

Nice version Judith puts her own spin on this beautiful song and Annie Haslam is a hard act to follow indeed. One of the finest and most moving songs ever written in my eyes: very underated.
I just now listened to two different videos of Renaissance's version, and I truly don't understand some of the comments made about comparisons between Annie Haslam's voice and that of Judith Durham. Sure, most prefer the original of any song over a cover, but even if you're not too crazy about Judith's version, if you 'isolate' the two voices it just seems that Judith Durham's clarity, power and control is definitely a cut above.

A clash of the female vocal titans ! Judith Durham v Annie Haslam - the result (in my humble opinion) an honourable draw !
RIP Judith, wonderful heavenly voice.
This video is simply wonderful...and I deeply miss you Judith.
R.I.P. Judith truly the voice of an angel
I am from Bolton, the town where Annie Haslam of Renaissance was born, and this version is fantastic.
high praise indeed from a kin of the great Annie Haslam.

A stunning revisit to the Renaissance classic! Rest in sweet peace, dear Judith.
Perfect! Hard to think she hailed from Australia. You are missed.

Judith has such a phenomenal voice. Check out the 'A cappella' songs.
Never heard this version before, just great, saw Judith and the Seekers at the Albert Hall on their farewell tour, voice of an angel
Judith Durham: always remembered, never forgotten. Sleep deep, sleep well little one.

Great version of a great song. Thanks for posting.
The arrangement here is a lot simple than Renaissance's. I put both in my Renaissance playlist. Thanks for the upload!

She's very very good. I'm very familiar with Annie Haslam's diction, so it's a slightly odd experience.
fantastic music carnt fault it if i could plant a pair of angelic wings on judiths back i would do that she has the voice of an angel

This is as close to what Annie Haslem put forth!
An Australian singing about Northern lights. There's a catch I don't get.
@tecdessus Agree with this explanation.
Can you really see the northern lights from australia
It's not about the aurora borealis
No, but you can see the Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis in Tasmania.

She dropped it down 1/2 step.
Both brilliant but I don't like the 'in my eyes' phrasing in Judith Durhams' version. Wonder what Karen Carpenter would have made of this song?
Judith Durham had an amazing voice...but Annie did it better on the original song imho.
A brilliant version, but still not as good as Annie’s original!
Annie Haslams version will never be bettered. Judith Durham doesn't do it for me with this version.
Love Judith and the Seekers but even the fantastic voice of Judith does not match Annie Haslam on this one.
Why is she singing about the northern lights if she lives in the southern hemisphere?
Because she isn't singing about the aurora borealis one sees in arctic regions.
I personally prefer this version having only heard the renaissance one before, it's a far less bombastic arrangement and more attuned to the lyrics

P.S never noticed how strine she sounds in the lower range! I think she sings “my” in the chorus a semitone higher than the original too but it works!
