The Making Of F.P.Journe's Most Complicated Watch

- In the world of high complications, the grande and petite sonnerie holds a very special place, well above even split-seconds chronographs, perpetual calendars, and certainly above the once-holy tourbillon. There are but a small handful of watchmakers, as individuals, or as brands, capable of producing such a watch. It is that special, and François-Paul Journe launched his Sonnerie Souveraine back in 2006, by himself. For more, go to: www.hodinkee.co...
I lived in Geneva for three years and walked past this house probably every day of my stay but never knew this was F-P Journe's HQ. Thanks Hodinkee.
Oh, my GOD! When did he have the time to make this piece? He's always present at all events and receptions, and he travels a lot everywhere, New York, Paris. This guys is amazing and this is one of my grail watches.
i Would literally where that facing backwards, that's the most beautiful movement I've ever seen in my life
Francois Paul Journe is definitely one of the great watchmakers of our time.
Hodinkee is the channel that made watches a obsession of mine. I love your videos I wake up at anytime to see your new videos. I am only 13 but Hodinkee made me get into watches because I have seen that a time piece is more than just the time it's hours of craftsmanship. I am now into vintage watches because I saw from your talking watches episodes that a every watch has a story. I have worked a lot to earn money. I am looking forward to buying a Tudor Heritage Chrono a Omega Speed master or a 34mm Datejust. Once again thank you for the videos and thank you for giving me a new hobby.
Wit Poka good work kid, vintage watches, classic cars, property and investments... be interested in these things and you'll be fine
I’m confident that you would also enjoy TheWATCHES.tv here on RUclips. Another great channel like this one, hope that you do. Take care and enjoy. 😎👍🏻
Journe, is without doubt, a watchmaker who is already recognised as one of the great names in the annals of history.
His, conquering of -scientific challenges - and the asthetic beauty of his pieces -true art-, are true wonders.
What an amazing craft. It hurts me to the core to realize I will never have the honor of owning one of these masterpieces. As always, great job Ben
This is why I go to Hodinkee. Quality stuff again, as always. Keep up the good work!
It looks like only 99 people said anything in 7+ years . . .
good lord, their movements are nicer than most other brands dials.
Even their work coats are pure classe
It makes you understand why they use crystal back’s because it would be a crime against art to hide that movement
Another GREAT review from Ben and Co! Top! Keep the good work!!
Excellent work. Both for the video and for what happens within it. Thank you very much for the good work.
Òscar.
What a work of art! Thank you for the insight Benjamin!
Only Two words to describe him A Genius and Artist cause each watch he makes are Perfection and is a Masterpiece.
great video, no fluff, just really interesting and fantastic visuals, thanks.
Truly amazing, such detail.
So wonderful workshop space!
Simply amazing.
Fantastic. FP Journe is a legend.
Thank you for the video. An amazing watch.
Perfection !!!!
I love hodinkee! Seriously! I love it!!
Amazing time piece one day with a lot of hard work I will have one
Another level !!!
FP Journe... even their building is iconic
I'll definitely get on some day! I hope they'll stay in business and wait for me!
Absolutely stunning. One day I'll have a beautiful collection of watches.
A watch doesn't have to be expensive to be appreciated.
I collect and restore Canadian Westclox pocket watches.
I taught myself how to repair them and most of my watches were purchased in broken condition.
They may be simple and in their day cheap but they still have a beauty of their own and I also have an attachment to them from having restored them to working order
Just discovered your video and channel, loved and subscribed ....
I have always loathed wristwatches but I like these very much
I can only dream about having me one of these ones, for now!
Simply amazing!
Wonderful.
Complicated watches are wonderful, but that's what they are - complicated watches. Before
the advent of computer, they do make sense. Now, it's just simply not
practical. It's just like cars.
Too often 'dress watch' simply means 'not a sports watch', but, there's rather more to it
than that. For example a high end classic Three Centre Hands manual
winding watches are very rare, and sort after by connoisseurs. One of this in
Patek will cost you a Benz or BMW. Normally, what we see are those with 2 hands
or sub second hand.
So, as watch lovers, we are grateful to Grand Seiko
for continuing with the SBGW series every year, the latest being the 231, at an
affordable price of 3K, with finishing that even Patek would not want to
compete.
6:07 no safety glasses!? Beautiful watches.
Even laying eyes on these watches should require one to wear safety glasses
C’est un génie ce mec
My holy grail watch is an FPJ. I'll stop watching watch videos on youtube the day I get an FPJ.
With that gong, imagine dropping this watch.
These watchmakers have to be the most detail oriented people in the world and doing that with perfection is amazing.
Turning my wrist slowly to see my SKX
Was that guy missing a finger or not?
great video
I would love any watch from those guys
3:05 What is that base made of? Looks like metal, wouldn't that scratch the item thats being polished?
a chiming watch? can it get more amazing than that?
Glued dial was a let down. There is no glue for any kind of material that won't deteriorate or decompose within a human lifetime.
When the second hand is placed, the sub-dial will be fixed forever, glue is not there to hold the subdial until forever, its just there until assembly probably.
As the nuns used to say “enunciation“.
what does that rubbery thing (dome shaped) do at 5:30 ??
Abid Hassan its a pad to transfer paint to the dial. What puts the numbers and text on it.
Dream watch!
Sublime
dial using glue?! come on
same thought and not impressed with this watch as well meh
How pricing have changed since then...
Looks like an Invicta. How much are these, probably couple hundred bucks? I looked at CostCo couldn't find any.
Can anyone explain why the success rate on making the dial is 30%?
A minute repeater with no lever? How does that work?
This is a super fancy infomercial.
I always thought Titanium has a certain ring to it, I would love to hear a minute repeater made from titanium... does it exist?
Looks a spider movement, very cool.
price?
Why is the voiceover so muffled
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One day
This is a homage of lange & söhne
WOW Ben was so much slimmer back then
If FP was using the metal with the best resonance properties, he’d be using titanium alloy. Very few do so because it’s a harder material to machine, unlike the softer golds, platinum, and (316L) stainless steel.
F.P. uses tantulum in his entry level watch. Which is the one of the most difficult metal to work with (machine it). I don't think he would go for easy option in his most expensive and complicated watch. Don't you think?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So.... I wanna see y'all have your $50 Casio do that.
Is there really a better watch maker ?
Philippe Dufour perhaps?
+citygreek1 Kari Voutilainen, Romain Gauthier, etc.
+Christophe FRANCOIS it was a question, not a statement... when you're that good, does it make a difference ? DuFour, Voutilainen, Ferrier etc etc
FPJ, Dufour, Kari, are all great watchmakers but nobody mentioned Roger Smith. Roger is up there also and might be the best there is.
You mean it was a rhetorical question.
I'm in the watch part of RUclips now my recommendations are gonna be wrecked
It is only $650000 !
Yes but, hand polishing, bevelling, ...
Using machines...and saying that all done by hand..
😂
Observation: The narrator is clearly reading everything.
But as if he'd rather be doing something else, anything, except talking watches.
Too bad these end up in hands of obsessed collectors instead of someone who genuinely appreciates the craftsmanship
whats the point of having a watch if you`re afraid of wearing it on the streets:)
i dont think many people know what a fp journe is so i wouldnt worry too much.
No faith in its customers ability to operate its watches. lol. Great video and manufacture. I can't afford it, so what's the price being cheaper than its competitors?
It costs USD $650,000 brand new, with a waitlist of 2-3 years.
+MystikEssence No, price is at around 150,000 CHF. Still a lot, but not 650 K...
Get yourself a stylist, or at least a travel iron and vocal coach.
Not impressed
much better than Lange & sohne
Sb Sb they're much more unique, but similar quality. Fp journe is my favorite brand
It seems to be. FPJ is at the same level as RWS.
Why waste cost to buy expensive machines just to make a few parts ? The company can design the parts and outsource the components to another company. This way they can significantly reduce cost and save money !
What an ugly movement!
Ugly . A Self Determined to Say So !
I'm sorry. This horrible voiceover does not do the subject of the video justice.
crap
I wear mine when the $10 Casio is not in use. Seems cool enough.
