I get that Butcher made a promise to keep Ryan always safe to Becca. I mean he himself said that blood doesn’t form bonds or relationships when he said to Soldier Boy that Homelander wasn’t his son even though biologically he was.
What I never will understand is that Butcher had the perfect opportunity to explain to Soldier Boy, that how Ryan even though being related to Homelander, was more of Becca and Butcher’s son and I also think that both Soldier Boy and Butcher missed the perfect opportunity to form a good grandparent-grandson and father-son relationship respectively with Ryan. Butcher, Soldier Boy and Ryan, all 3 could’ve teamed up to beat Homelander, but they missed that opportunity big time because Ryan was already pissed off at Butcher and the reason: MISCOMMUNICATION.
Which I feel Season 4 will slowly retcon that since Ryan will most likely start seeing how fucked up Homelander is plus we all know the two characters from Gen V will be apart of the 7 which I know Sam will be obviously Black Noir 2 being he haves the most mentally unstable issues. While the empathy psychic girl will be used by Homelander to torture people

But to me, an anti-hero is what he is. The writers goofed his character a few times as it is in the season so I doubt even they have a direct answer. Funnily enough, SB even has better morals than Butcher of all people. He was the only one who made a deal and stuck to it.
If they wanted me to hate him, they f-ed that up by getting Jensen Ackles to play him. Too charismatic. And made their badly written plan to try and make him worse than Homelander just not work.

So great going to Butcher, by not using his brain, he ensures that Homelander now has control over the only two other supes who are strong enough to take him out.

I think the “my wife’s son” line hits weird for people because they forget that Butcher actually loved his wife and would do anything for her. He’s spent so much time regretting the things he hadn’t done while she was alive so he’s trying to make up for it, by keeping his promise. He loved her that much💛!
Men from Soldier Boy’s era weren’t all necessarily on that type of time (love and protection). So ain’t no telling how SB would respond to his wife being SA’d, but I’m sure we can imagine it wouldn’t be good for anyone involved including her.
