Underproduced, gritty, a little grimy...and utterly amazing. It comes out so organic, so intimate as a result. This is music stripped of pretense and reduced to pure substance. Greg is wholly underappreciated.
Bro has like 3 different versions of this song. Each one just as good as the other. Each one has its own vibe. One of the most underrated artist of the gen
Lmao 100% on spot. The version i heard on Spotify was slowed down, then came on youtube and heard this one almost 2x tempo lmao. Great tune Nevertheless. For evey mood you in apparently 😆
I love his other albums, but man I’d kill for an entire album in this vibe. No production, just him and the guitar, and the violin and bass. Stripped back.
This is one of those songs that is so powerful it makes you stop whatever you are doing and just stare off into space as you listen to it. Amazing song-writing and great instrumentation!
Lyrics: You were a phonograph, I was a kid I sat with an ear close, just listening I was there when the rain tapped her way down your face You were a miracle, I was just holding your space Well time has a way of throwing it all in your face The past, she is haunted, the future is laced; Heartbreak, you know, drives a big black car Swear I was in the back seat, just minding my own And through the glass, the corn crows come like rain They won't stay, they won't stay For too long now This could be all that we know Of love and all Well you were a dancer and I was a rag The song in my head, well, was all that I had Hope was a letter I never could send Love was a country we couldn't defend And through the carnival we watch them go round and round All we knew of home was just a sunset and some clowns Well you were a magazine, I was a plain Jane Just walking the sidewalks all covered in rain Love to just get into some of your stories Me and all of my plain Jane glory Just me and all of my plain Jane glory
I’m more fond of the soft, nostalgic feel of the original version, rather than the intense _forward motion_ of this version, where the changed instrumentation and uptick in tempo have really changed what the song *feels like.* I wouldn’t *dislike it* though, by any means, this just isn’t my go to. Not my cuppa.
Dear Gregory, Thank you for showing me how to live in this world. Back on the train once again. This will be my last ride. You take your road, and I'll take mine, and don't forget all the beautiful lyrics you left behind. Guess I'll meet you in heaven. Ur old friend from camp
Isakov is magnetic. Highly under-rated, he is one of the few folk artists remaining in the key light. Although nostalgia, poetry, and talent are of little value in modern society, his style is rememberable.
this has become such a feel good tune for me to fall back on, i just can't stop loving it each and every time i listen to it - my boyfriend thinks of it as 'my' song! so gutted i missed his performance at miss peapods in penryn!
Hoping he pulls this version out at Red Rocks this year I love when a songwriter takes a song and changes it- but it loses nothing!!! The Avett bros messed a few up(Souls, In the curve) man Greg’s done this with almost all off Weatherman.. “You were a dancer and I was a rag, the song in my head was just all that I had. Hope was a letter I never could send, Love was a country I just couldn’t defend… You were a magazine I was a plain Jane love to carry all of yer stories, just me and all of my plain Jane glory!” Heartbreak ya know it drives a big black car.. 🙏🫶miss my BFF👽👽💫🫂🤝🦋 I can only send all my best, and have faith she’s doing great❤️🩹💓
Ahhhh....I love him! I cant get enough! I get to see him play in a couple weeks and its one of the only things keeping me sane these days! I never aspired to be a groupie.....but for you Gregory.....I will groupie it up!
enough good things to say about this performance - super awesome and on from there into the starry sky... consummate artistry at each of many levels. hits my seven chakras one two three etc
Great video! Great song! Four years after it is posted and I am just now seeing it :( It deserves it's cult status. There are 20 to 50 individual postings on RUclips showing people posting their own versions of this song..... and many more, lie me, watching those videos to see how to play it... Rock On!
I had the exact same thing happen🤯- but she sent me 2nd chances, She always takes it Black and Honey it’s alright… I sent this, Amsterdam and St Luis. Ahhh when you bond over music like this most have rarely even shared with others it’s really special, all Dualtone musicians from Shakes to ‘Eers: I did make the mistake of trying to share his Label mate, Langhorne Slim, with a few people I really felt were special and that’s a HUGE risk for me, the man’s a real close friend, a healer.. family, the energy he brings is unmatched. I was blessed to see him open for Prine which was his dream come true(last US show John did❤️🩹) Slim was soooo happy to see me afterwards🙃 but I can’t do that- I tried with someone again, planned it out for over a month got on VIP list etc- I don’t go out a lot as is but, I really felt this person not only wanted to come but needed it. Unfortunately, I won’t do that again, they cancelled 3xs in 13 hrs and I wasn’t “allowed” to feel hurt or disappointed 😔 got called names for saying I was disappointed. Then the show was strange I had people devouring my energy and Sean wasn’t giving it back like usual, so I was depleted for over a week as well as got sick. And that meant I wasn’t who I said🤦🏼 all my brutal honesty, putting things out there I normally wouldn’t from go, went from being appreciated and trusted to nope I was something completely different because they couldn’t be honest with ME? Worst, she was 38, but no talking just assumptions. But the one who disappeared, destroyed me. She’s part me- If you know Greg you know why she’d send 2nd chances. I wear my heart and childhood wonder on my sleeve, so: “Thought that part was yers but it might just be mine I could share with you if you gave me the time” I’m that guy who sees what most just don’t take the time to look for, knowing it’ll usually get me hurt.. cuz you can’t make someone see themselves as you do😔 no matter how much you show, reassure, support.. it’s heartbreaking. You try and you try but you can’t call it home.. I don’t understand but I’ll always care, and miss Antionette. She had pieces of me, I gave her.. there’s her shaped wholes in my heart and soul from where I extended all my grace to her- “You’ll love her till it all goes dark you’ll love her even after that” That… is a painful truth. Unfortunately she probably understands but, I just gotta keep doing me.. headed to Red rocks to see him in Sept. I won’t chase a female but I’ll chase music ❤️🩹 it’s never left me, or abandoned me when I needed it most its always there. Unfortunately I just think what I want isn’t out there and I’ve never settled(my definition of settling is different it has 0 to do with looks, pretty faces are everywhere, hearts not so much). Sure I can use my looks and I’ve resigned to the fact if I don’t now I’ll regret it cuz my way.. just ends in pain. Honesty and complete openness, respect and reciprocity, those aren’t looked for anymore. Good luck I hope whatever you want to happen does🙏💫🫂
Remember when this song was featured on Christmas McDonalds commercial back in 2011? That how I found this song. And I'm so glad I did! I love this song!
It's almost always a given that the studio version of a song will be superior to any that follow, EXCEPT in this case. Why the hell wasn't this version on the album??? Love this version! :)
A friend of mine told me about you and I told her I would check out your music because she has good taste in music. She was right once again! I've watched a few of your videos already and so far I like everyone of them.
I want to be friends with everyone on here who loves this song and this artist as much as I do
Me too
Yea, not a lot of people listen to these kinds of awesome songs.
Let's be friends 🙏🤷♂️
I LOVE THIS GUY'S WORK!

This Empty Northern Hemisphere is a masterpiece.
His best work hands down
Facts. Period
Truly man
Totally agree.
Easily one of my top five favorite

What this guy said^^
Not gonna lie, this wasn't the BBC i was expecting when i searched. I ain't disappointed either.

Hey there I am again
A very relatable comment (started listening since lockdown, here i am again.)
Checking in for my monthly big black car listen as well
Honestly this song live is one of the most beautiful sounds known to mankind.
Absolutely!

I be poopin
What a song. I recently took a road trip across three thousand miles of the United States, listening to this song all along the way.
On my knees, prayin’ for a new album. Simply because this man knows his magic.
Amin!
@@wulfnesthead8788 Was just at his show and he said should be one coming next year!
Been coming back to this RUclips version for 7+ years now.. someone about it ❤️
The voice, the violin, the guitar, and then the rug came in and really tied it all together.
Lyrics:
You were a phonograph, I was a kid
I sat with an ear close, just listening
I was there when the rain tapped her way down your face
You were a miracle, I was just holding your space
Well time has a way of throwing it all in your face
The past, she is haunted, the future is laced;
Heartbreak, you know, drives a big black car
Swear I was in the back seat, just minding my own
And through the glass, the corn crows come like rain
They won't stay, they won't stay
For too long now
This could be all that we know
Of love and all
Well you were a dancer and I was a rag
The song in my head, well, was all that I had
Hope was a letter I never could send
Love was a country we couldn't defend
And through the carnival we watch them go round and round
All we knew of home was just a sunset and some clowns
Well you were a magazine, I was a plain Jane
Just walking the sidewalks all covered in rain
Love to just get into some of your stories
Me and all of my plain Jane glory
Just me and all of my plain Jane glory
Much appreciated thanks
Thank you!
i love the how they knew opening the piano and putting a weight on the sustain pedal would add resination to the recording.
I am heart broken that this man was singing without me knowing it. I would have been his first fan if only I'd known!
I was late to the party too, m8. Be glad you made it!
This version of the song needs to make it into an album.
i think it's on "this empty northern hemisphere", there are two renditions of it there.
Hmm, perhaps you have some sort of extended album? The one on Google Play doesn't have it :(
How could someone dislike this amazing song and artist!
I’m more fond of the soft, nostalgic feel of the original version, rather than the intense _forward motion_ of this version, where the changed instrumentation and uptick in tempo have really changed what the song *feels like.* I wouldn’t *dislike it* though, by any means, this just isn’t my go to. lol its not Robert Downey Jr playing a violin, its Its Jeb bows, playing a fiddle. :)
You do realize that a violin and a fiddle are the exact same instrument. Right?
I found him through a Subaru commercial with Time Will Tell. I think it was Subaru anyway. Lol, I forgot the car but never forgot the song!
I love this song, but the video just as equally. awesome work.
Love this - the handheld feel is great, song is an absolute gem
