  • IT IS IMPORTANT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO TO THE END AS THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE ELECTRICAL FAULT… This video started out as an Alternator charging fault, which is bad enough but there was more to come ! These faults have been on the van since I bought it and gradually got worse over time….It’s running and starting better than ever now !

    I have just replaced my alternator after watching this video. I opted for removing the plastic front of the wheel arch. The alternator came out and new one in with reasonable ease. Hope this helps someone !

      Hi Dee Kay, thanks for the comment...YOU MUST BE JOKING... it's a wonder the closing video clip wasn't me hanging from the rafter's, this job had me demented, these intermittent, bad connection ( as apposed to open circuit failures ) faults are always very hard to detect, fixing them is normally not a problem, normally a quick fix, but finding them....a different story haha ... anyway it's all fixed now and never ran or started better...
      thanks for watching and taking time to comment...
      Cheers...Jimmy...

    As soon as i saw you had problems with the charge voltage i knew before i even watched the rest of the video your earth strap was knackered. You didn't actually need to change the alternator. Its a very common fault on these vans as its gets covered in road salt and corrodes. What i did is run a new earth from the centre bulk head bolt between the wipers down to the engine block so it less likely to fail from the road salt. My van now charges at 14.4v. BUT due to the fact it had been left for so long with bad charging before i bought the van it killed the old battery so i had to fit a new AGM so it still cost me £140 to get a proper fix. I since found out that PSA fleet van operators can have this problem on as little as 3 years old vans.
    BTW i also did a full van conversion with shower during the lockdown:)

    So several days later and after fitting a new alternator, the fault was fixed with a £4.50 cable 😪
    I'm sure I told you last week to check the earth strap first.😁

    Amazing Jimmy, thank you for sharing your expertise, I'd love to have a mentor like you! I've recently acquired a Relay and the coolant is filthy, brown and rusty looking. Do you think this is anything to worry about or does it just need a clean out?

    • @jamesstringer8172
      @jamesstringer8172  2 года назад

      Hiya Ben, Great van's, good choice !
      About your cooling system problem, It's a bit hard to say, not seeing it ! I'm assuming it's not overheating, or has excess exhaust smoke ( white ), or water in the engine oil (creamy brown color ) ?
      If you don't have any of the above symptoms, If you've got a hose pipe, I'd drain the system and flush it out ( till the water runs clear ), also do both the radiator and the engine block.
      Keep an eye on it after that and see what happens ( don't forget the anti freeze ).
      Good luck with that, hope it all goes well, you didn't say... is it just a work van or are you converting it to a camper ( great van for a camper ).
      Cheers...Jimmy ...

    Having a nightmare with my 2008 relay which has also been standing for a while. It’s got to be electrical but I can’t find it. The front indicator lights were the only ones working, the rears and wing mirrors weren’t. The engine light was on, the central,locking didn’t work, and the abs light was on. The fuel guage was reading zero and the fuel light flashing. I fiddled a bit, checking the ecu connectors etc. Then after no joy, I gave up. Put the headlight back in and turned the ignition on to close the window, and low and behold the fuel gauge was reading correct again. I tried some other things and now the full beams don’t work, the indicators are all working bar the front ones which were originally working! The central locking still isn’t working, the wipers and washers have stopped working and the van is immobilised. Given up again for today. Already changed the gearbox earth strap to try fix another fault I had. Must be another earth or dodgy wire somewhere, but I’m sick of it!

      Hi Tom, I'm not going to ask how your doing, you have my sympathy, I was in the same boat not so long ago, although yours sounds worse than mine was.
      It sounds like you've got a right can of worms there, sorry I don't have any definitive answers for you ! I suspect you've got a few faults there, I think if I were you I'd check all your electrics and make a list, then go through them one at a time, you might find some faults put more than one thing right but I still think you've got multiple faults on your van.
      Thanks for watching & commenting & I wish you the best of luck with your van, sorry I couldn't be more helpful...
      Cheers...Jimmy...

    Question please do ya put the belt on before putting the alternator back on, I've tried but can't get the alternator back in place

    • @jamesstringer8172
      @jamesstringer8172  Год назад +1

      Hiya "shane mc" how you doing.
      Thanks for the comment & question ! the answer is no, you have to fit the alternator first , a little tip, I think I mentioned it in the video but in case I didn't ...make sure you put all the bolts into the alternator casing BEFORE you fit it to the engine , it's a bit of a tricky job but there's one of the bolts you can't get in after the alternators is fitted, It would be a right buggar if you struggled to fit the alternator then had to remove it again because you couldn't get the last bolt in hahaha.
      Hope that helps, good luck, it's a bit of a tricky job , take it easy and don't loose your rag ( easy for me to say haha ) ... you'll get it .
      Cheers ... Jimmy ...

      @@jamesstringer8172 hey 👋 thanks for the quick reply , I've been 4 days now trying to get a née belt on and I'm guessing now that one of the bolts is meant to hold the earth cable and I ant remember attaching it again lol. Also i just can't get the belt back on . I've probably took off to much of the trimming aswell it's gonna be difficult trying to remember where everything goes again. I had rain dripping in my eyes yesterday so I had to give up again . There is no tension release either and my battery is now flat , so I ant get the belt half way on then try turn it over to get the rest on . What an awkward job it is to be doing I'm these conditions. I can't get it onto ramps either as the battery is flat lol. Did you put the belt on the alternator then the bigger wheel and did you start from the top of the bigger wheel or the bottom 🤔 any help or information would be extremely helpful thank you 😊 happy Christmas 🎄

      I feel your pain mate, it's not really a job for a novice ! I don't know if your replacing the belts too ? if you are, make sure you've got the right belts ! you'd never get a standard belt on , make sure it's a "streachy" belt !
      It's hard for me to guide you with words , I think I explain it better on the video but I'll try ... You need to fit (& tighten) the alternator to the engine block, then fit the belt over the alternator pully making sure it's in the center ( on the groves of the pully , also double check this on all the pulleys when the belt's on ) , then starting from the bottom of the crankshaft ( the big pully) as you need to turn the engine in it's normal direction of rotation ( & on this engine that's clockwise ), then while holding the belt on with one hand turn the engine clockwise with a socket & ratchet or similar NOT THE STARTER MOTOR .I hope that helps but as I said earlier I think the video explains it better ( maybe watch it again ! a shameless plug for my video haha )
      GOOD LUCK ...

      Yeah Jimmy I got it on using a screw driver and just let the screw driver travel around while pushing it up hard as I could , then the belt started to move sideways on the alternator so I had to do it in reverse with the screw driver on the alternator, I had to go reverse then forward a few times to get it in place . "But its on now " thank God and thanks to watching your video. Thanks a million for posting the video and for replying so quickly great help 👍 As I said I tool off to much trimming so it was fun trying to figer out what goes where and what screw go where and as a result I have some left over screws lol 😆 Have a good Christmas

    Hello, what measures of the V belts did you use?

    • @jamesstringer8172
      @jamesstringer8172  Год назад

      Hiya "Adrian Ciesielski " how you doing ?
      Thanks for your comment and question, I must admit I'm not 100% sure what your asking ! The belts on my van are not "V" belts ! they are what's called ribbed belts and the particular one on my van is known as a "stretchy" belt as the system has no tensioner fitted to tension the belt ( earlier models do have a tensioner but are still ribbed belts ). I hope that helps you .
      Thanks again for watching my video and commenting , good luck with your van.
      Cheers ... Jimmy ...
