  • A woodworker's first attempt at 3D printing. Am I a maker now? Did I create these or did the printer? Who cares, at least I can hang my lathe tools so they are not left in random places all over the workshop.

I love you mentioned shelf depth. I no longer buy or make shelves deeper than 12”. Also I like the 4x8 on a concrete wall. I have the perfect use for that.

I almost bought that printer the other night after seeing your organizers on IG. I have to clear up my project list before I get into anything else though. Organization is an ongoing project for me as well. Great work, Andy.

Thanks Sean, I hear ya, staring at my project list is daunting. 3D printing has been easier to get started in than I thought though.

If you had a colored dot on the printer bed you might be able to get your video software to track the dot. A longer lens from further away would reduce the distortion. Probably still a mess but possibly better.

Hmm, didn't know the dot tracking was possible, will need to look into that

Haha you mean “coaxial flux bipolar interference”!!
Very good end product and it fixes the tool storage problem.

Good work ;) 3D printer is very helpful every day at workshop

I'm still a 3D printing novice, but I have learnt a little bit. I'd suggest, to improve part strength, trying a couple of things. Experiment with the printing orientation - the part is more likely to break along the layer lines so rotate it on the bed so that the layers are horizontal, once mounted, rather than vertical. You could also try increasing the infill percentage. Unrelated to part strength: try playing with the retraction settings to prevent the spiderweb effect and make cleanup easier. Have fun!

You’re lazy? That must mean that I’m dead. Cool stuff Andy, fun to see the shop come together.

I’d love to have one of those 3-D printers. I’m making all my tool holders out of scrap wood.

I like the plywood storage solution. Have you had any issues with wood to concrete connection, such as moisture?

I print parts to use with my 3d printer as opposed to models, when you break your piece you can see the problem. Change your wall thickness setting to six, this allows you to have a decently strong part while still using a partial infill.

A 3D printer seems like something that would be hard to justify the expense but you would find a ton of stuff to use it for once you have it.

You can get a good 3D-Printer for under 150€ /180$ - what expense are you talking about?

Thanks for sharing. The product strength in Z direction is lower than the other two planes so flip your tool holders 90 degrees for better results

Now you need to print a camera mount for the printer's table. That will fix the time lapse video. lol

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  6 лет назад +2

Maybe, I’m a little worried the extra weight would burn out to tiny servo on such a cheap printer

I'm looking forward to when you build your own 3D printer! :)

Andy - check out OctoPrint and see if your printer supports it. I also just got into 3D printing and found that to be really beneficial. It can also do your time lapse for you.

Increase your retraction distance and speed in your slicer to cut down on the stringing on your prints.

PLA so easily can cracked? I tried parts printed from this plastic. They were pretty strong. Waiting for my 3d printer to try print by myself

I very much like the style of this video. I got into 3D printing in January. It's pretty addicting. There's a couple good camera mounts for you printer on thingiverse. Maker Muse, Make Anything, and Thomas Sanladerer are some great 3D printing channels.

Are you going to after the files or share the files so that others can print this I have a 3-D printer but I do not have any software or a slicer or whatever they’re called I know nothing about it

  • @etchmfg

you can use octoprint on raspberry pi with $7 playstation camera on amazon along with a 3D printed camera mount on the bed itself (see thingiverse) for effortless timelapse footage and remote viewing.

Nice use of the printer for the shop!! As to beefing up the prints, just increase infill percentage (% of plastic in volume). I print most display stuff at 20% but for handling and strength go to 60-75%. You'll be spending an extra few grams on plastic but thats negligible. For extra simple shapes use also TinkerCAD. What else have you made and have you put the files on the shared site of Thingiverse?

You could secure a camera to the base, as long as it doesn't get in the way of any moving parts.

    Is that a wood-infused filament?
Otherwise I don't know why it would be so fragile.. Definitely not the best quality PLA.

What's that mini countersink bit that you used? Amazon store link doesn't work, didn't they discontinue those?

I changed the link, does it work now? If Amazon discontinued the stores I didn't get (or read) the memo.
