  • Chavez earned $1.4 million, and Taylor got $1 million.
The fight aired live on HBO.
Dr. Flip Homansky, who examined Taylor after the fight, said, "Meldrick suffered a facial fracture, he was urinating pure blood, his face was grotesquely swollen...this was a kid who was truly beaten up to the face, the body, and the brain."
The fight was named Fight of the Year and Fight of the Decade by The Ring.
After the fight, Taylor said he was having too much difficulty getting down to 140 pounds and moved up to the welterweight division. Chavez was comfortable at 140 and stayed at junior welterweight. The rematch didn't happen until 1994, when Taylor went back to 140 to meet Chavez.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

This was actually a good stoppage from the referee. Taylor was taking an extreme amount of punishment in the last 3 rounds.

believe it or not, at the time of this fight, only hardcore fight fans (outside of Mexico) had ever heard of either of these fighters. I remember I worked in an office of 100, and the following Monday NO ONE had seen, and no one I asked had heard of either man.

ONE of the BEST FIGHTS in Boxing HISTORY ! A TERRIBLE CALL by Referee RICHARD STEELE with 4 secs. left. Boxer was coherent & getting instructions from corner. Should have left it to Judges.

Dont get knocked down then and when the ref asks you a question twice ..you answer..Chavez took him out in 8 rounds in the rematch too

That's not a terrible call because the ref was talking too him and he was not even looking at him nor responded back and don't forget that Taylor used the ropes too get up can't be doing that but in the end it was a great boxing fight classic epic

I would agree - if there were only 2 seconds left - but in fact, there were 5 seconds left. what difference does that make? 2 is not enough time for JCC to land another punch,' however, five is plenty enough time. Good stoppage.

"Can you still fight?" "[glazed expression]" "What's your name?" "[glazed expression]"
Don't be a pussy. That was one hundred point zero percent legit. If you can't respond to the referee you are UNFIT TO CONTINUE.
And what is this horsehit about "fighters not near each other"? JCC delivered a brain-damaging knockdown blow and was ordered to his corner. What would YOU have done? Not only failed to respond to a command from the referee, but disobey his instruction to the corner? Look who's babbling about "corruption."
