Thousands protest in Russia: What does this mean for Putin and Russian politics? | DW News

- In Russia, dozens of protesters have been arrested after clashes with riot police in the central region of Bashkortostan.
Thousands of people demonstrated in the town of Baymak after an environmental activist was sentenced to four years in prison for allegedly inciting hatred.
Police used force and tear gas to disperse protesters and several people were injured.
According to Russia’s strict anti-demonstration laws, protesters found guilty of so-called "mass-rioting" could face up to 15 years in prison.

"A democracy without the right to protest is no democracy !" Bless you all for showing unity !
RF and democratic are opposite terms. Actually Russia up to now has never known a kind of democratic government, and de-facto one dictator was swapped by another one. Even M Gorbachev was a dictator, maybe with the face to humanity, but his was not a democratic political person. So, why do you expect democratic approach from dictator's regime?

Russia is the problem, not Putin. Read some history, or even just watch some decent RUclips history clips. Russia has been invading, brutalizing, starving, culturally oppressing etc. its neighbours since before Putin or even Putin's father were ever born. You never heard of Kruschev? Stalin? You don't know who Lenin is? Or the Czar?
✊🏼 Keep protesting for freedom brothers.
See the embarrassed police who won't show their faces in case of retaliation later.
I think that's less embarrassment than impunity. I'd be surprised if anybody who does Putin's scutwork is capable of embarrassment.
I respect those who pushback against this madness! The people of russia can end this in ways no one else can. For the love of god, END THIS POINTLESS WAR!
Did you respect the truckers convoy in Canada? or were you one all in for the jab?
Me, a Russian, learning of this from RUclips...
Putin did a great job saturating the media field apparently
Yes, your people live inside the state TV - zomboyashik
As a russian, I hope putin will join Gaddafi soon, with the same departure method!
YES. Exactly that.
I would prefer seeing him in front of the ICC, because I care a lo5 about International Law, I think that whenever it’s possible, it’s extremely important to put those who violate The Rules of War, International Law, and international agreements, on trial…..
(Part of my job back when I was in the Army was to assist in teaching young recruits the Rules of War, so I’m probably a bit extra focused on this issue than most others).
However, although I strongly oppose the death penalty, I wouldn’t be able to blame Russians if they decided to reinstate the death penalty in this instance and deal with him as they please!
The harm he and his oligarch bratva in the Kremlin has done to Russia is insane
Back in the late 90's early 00's, a lot of people hoped and believed that we would see a Russia seeking closer ties with the EU and NATO - Russia even participated in NATO led missions such as KFOR!
Russia COULD HAVE BEEN much more like Europe today - but massive corruption combined with wet dreams of a return of Imperialist Greater Russia rotted the brains away of those in power - and the people went silent - you shouldn’t wish death upon a bad Tzar!
(Implicit, the next one might be even worse)…..

Brave people
Don’t forget that most of the Russian draftees are from ethnic populations not Russians. More draftees need to come from Moscow.
"Russia a country where protests are harshly repressed" Hahahaha I remember last year protests in France and England, police beating up protesters.
You don't understand. In Russia every protest is an authoritarian communist protest, with a lot of violance. And in Eaurope is always a very democratic protests with peace, love and kittens.
To protest legally in Russia you must do so alone, 100 metres from anyone else. You have no idea what you are talking about.
@@jontalbot1 To protest legally in Russia you should approve the location that will not interfere the life of other people in local government office. And then you can protest with any amount of people.
But if you want to make a single protest - you can do that as you said.
You see, so brutal laws :D
@@LapkaKutiapka Thanks for the clarification. I briefly visited Ufa a few years ago and have very good memories. I get annoyed when people just see a clip of film and assume things are the same in Russia as they are in a democratic state

EXCELLENT!!! PEOPLE POWER!!!
So sad for this young man to be sent to jail. Total respect for the protesters
The Russian spirit is unbroken here it seems. I hope they can stand together and take back their country. Love from the USA
They are Bashkyrs, not Russians. Didn't you listen to the clip? The Russian spirit is for empire and conquest of their neighbours though , thankfully, some of the ethnic minorities under Russian rule disagree.
Actually, those people would love to not have to be russians anymore, as mentioned in the video. They want to be independent again, like they were before the moscovites have made them russians.
The ruzzian spirit doesn't exist. If the protests don't happen in Moscow or St Petersburg then you can safely ignore it

I have enormous respect for the activist and the protesters and fully support the self-determination and independence of the Bashkir people.
It’s not quite what the protests are about.
I also find it interesting that he was allowed to make a brief video prior to his jailing. I also noticed a woman holding a cell phone up to record him. Does this indicate an element of sympathy for him among the police and court officials? Or is something else going on that explains this?
This man and his supporters are brave people. I admire them!

I swear, it's almost like Russia is under control of the Combine from HL2.
I don't quite understand - what is the difference between separatists and nationalists in Russia and separatists and nationalists in Germany? Why is it good in one case and bad in the other?
Why the dispersal of demonstrators with rubber bullets, tear gas, water cannons, batons, harassment by service dogs, prison terms of 20 years, that is, everything that happens in Europe and America is a defense of democracy, and the suppression of lawlessness in Russia is a manifestation of dictatorship?
Because Russia is bad and EU/US are good. You don't need to think about that much. Just beleive.
Russia is suppressing freedoms, especially political freedoms.
And Russia itself doesn't seem to understand the difference between separatist and whether they're good or bad.
Yeah it’s hard to overthrow a dictator
Especially when the tyrant has machine guns and the people have snowballs.
Да хрен вам
This means you can only ruin so many lives before someone finally snaps, and then people come at you no matter what threats you lay out. No matter what wall you build, no mater how many guns you have. Life always finds a way.
If only more of russia had this courage they could overthrow putin
Everyone having the great equalizer is when you will see a true democracy.
Russians want Putin. Even here in Ukraine, most ethnic Russians are pro some kind of russian domination, even though they have Ukrainian passports. Russians have always supported authoritarian leaders. You are living in a dream world if you think they want to be San Francisco or Paris. Nothing in their history has ever shown it, not now, or in the USSR, or during the age of the Czars.

Yeah like the protests in Germany, USA, Britain, France, etc., just smaller... you'll do better in worrying and adressing those.
Doesn’t mean anything. Russian state tv is going to tell everyone there’s no problem and they’re going to take that as gospel straight away
Many Russians are currently busy fighting off the cold in their homes because heating pipes mysteriously keep bursting everywhere.

And people like Camp Lee, Jason Hinkle, that Code Pink people, Hasan Piker, etc are gonna repeat “color revolution “ and repeat Alexandar Dugin’s lies, and call any leftists against it fascists
Russian state tv actually showed that report (where do you think the footage came from?) basically saying that there was a case (provocation of rasism conflict), he announce quilty, there were protests, some of most violent activists were arrested. Surprised?
Now look how well DW shows protests in other countries other then Russia. .. found many?
