  • Willie, Sarah and their dogs Jack Spaniels & new puppy, Nori continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers are getting the tools back out, with planters to be made and boat renovations to be completed before we can take her back out on the open sea!
Plus Willie takes you on the first forage of the year - into the woodland for a bounty of wild garlic and we celebrate Nori's six month birthday!
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!

I think red was a great choice! My husband retired from the US Coast Guard, flew a lot of searches looking for boats/ships that were in distress and had been called into the USCG Base. We lived on the island of Kodiak, Alaska for 4yrs. Lots of salmon fishing, crabbing, lots of eagles, Kodiak bears. We loved it!

I pick wild garlic for our pork pie business, down in North Norfolk. One of our neighbours run a wild flower reserve in a wood, with a chalk stream running through. Perfect wild garlic habitat. They’ve very kindly given me permission to pick over at least the last decade, so like you I’m really careful to pick “my” patch sustainably so that there’s plenty when I come back next year.

Top tip! In addition to getting a compost bin (we make black gold too) in the Autumn and after a storm, go and fill a few feed bags with sea weed and top dress the beds with about 2" and leave all winter. It will take a while to rot down but our raised beds veg love it and its free!

Absolutely love the red color y’all choose for the boat. The windows look super duper as well. Nicely done! The natural landscape of the bush there is just beautiful. Despite the dismal weather at times, it is a truly beautiful place you’ve decided to live. Walking amid the lush forest, nearly every frame of your video was so picturesque. I can’t wait to see what springtime and summer adventures await! I’m hopeful there’ll be some metal detecting and mudlarking on your recently acquired permissions as the weather continues to improve; and maybe there’ll be some opportunities for beach walks on some little islands around the area for beach combing, too, putting the boat to good use on some remote marine outcrops not accessible by other means. Wherever your adventures take us, I can’t wait to see how your story unfolds. Thank you for taking us all along with you ❤

Rather than a single compost bin or heap consider having 2-3 that you can rotate. When turning a standard heap to aerate it, be aware that standing on it might cause your wellies to melt from the heat that builds up inside and don't be too surprised if that heat also makes it a popular hibernation spot for garden critters like hedgehogs and toads

You can`t close up the bottom of your planter boxes . They will fill up with rain water and drown your plants and lead to wood rot due to lack of drainage . They must be able to drain off any excess water or you will have problems . Six inches of gravel and some drain holes in the bottom will help . Heavy , galvanized screen in the bottom with the six inches of gravel on top of that works well also .

I have a huge rhubarb patch and I'd give some to friends cutting a dozen or so stems and chopping off the leaves (leaving them scattered on the ground until I got time to put them on the compost heap. I noticed absolutely no slug/snail activity where the leaves lay. I experimented by surrounding my young plants with the leaves and hey presto! Maybe there are some locals with rhubarb. Better than slug pellets. Good luck

It's wonderful how your family specifically includes Jack and Nori. And the boat repairs look great; Richard is getting competition for expert handyman (and handiwoman!)
I have to say, though, that for some reason the idea of jumping out of an airplane with a bedsheet tied to my back was much more agreeable to me than sailing on the ocean in a tiny little boat. I was never a fan of the water so joining the Navy when I was young was never an option. While your boat looks lovely, Sarah's dry-land boating adventure looked like a lot more fun!

I never expected red but it makes sense for safety reasons. Well done, sir!

Love what you are doing by building your lovely planters. I LOVE your wee boat. Does it have a name? You have done a super job on the boat - the two of you - do you call her Super Hog? So good that you will be very visible in her now in the water. xxx

The wild garlic looked lovely. How did last year’s gorse flower cordial go over? Are you planning to make more this year? I think the red on the boat will be great…when I was a little kid, my dad’s boat was a very deep, bright yellow; that was also very good against the water. I hope that the planters will be just far enough from the benches so that Nori can’t get in trouble jumping from one to the other! 😳. Cheers, and ATB!
