Also wrestled with placing Ryan Adams like Jason. I have a similar internal debate going on over Morrissey and the Smiths. It is the case that the knowledge of their scumbaggery (even if it is latter day) does end or at least vastly reduce the enjoyment of listening to their music.

    • @12spanku
      @12spanku 3 года назад

@@chasingthebeat Morrissey I can understand but Johnny Marr is not a scumbag surely? So they even each other out, just think about it that way. So you can allow Morrissey solo stuff to be tainted, but not The Smiths.

    • @chasingthebeat
      @chasingthebeat 3 года назад

@@12spanku Johnny Marr is fine - but being the lyricist and singer Morrissey was such a key figure in the Smiths. I still find a shadow, to use Jason's phrase, hangs over their music although it's much worse with Morrissey's solo output. "Bengali in Platforms' on Viva Hate gave a clue as to where things were going.

I agree to an extent with Kramzer’s description of Chris Martin but that doesn’t detract from a lot of excellent music he has created with his band. Their emergence in 2000 was the highlight of the year for me:
    1. Parachutes - Coldplay
    2. All That You Can’t Leave Behind - U2
    3. Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea - PJ Harvey
    4. Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia - The Dandy Warhols

Parachutes is one of those 60/40 albums for me. I think 60% of it is really great but the other 40% comes close to putting me to sleep. I never cared for "Yellow," for example. Still, it very nearly made my top 10.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I understand that many people find much of their music tedious but I really like their first two albums in particular. I think Yellow has definitely suffered from overplay, although it served its purpose by giving them the breakthrough to mass public acclaim.

🏆 Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven -Godspeed You! Black Emperor (I wasn't expecting instrumental music to be my winner but this album lives up to its title... parts of it are otherworldly)
    RUNNERS-UP:
▪︎Stories From the City Stories From the Sea -PJ Harvey (this album builds and builds... by the time the last two songs play it's goosebump city)
▪︎Kid A -Radiohead (WTF? But in a good way)
▪︎Smile -The Jayhawks (the melodies on this album are irresistible and unceasing)
▪︎Figure 8 -Elliott Smith (this guy was a bottomless well of musical ideas... his death was such a huge loss, RIP)
    JUST MISSED THE CUT:
▪︎Lost Souls -Doves (this album just sounds gorgeous on top of every song being great... pains me to leave it out of the top 5)
    ▪︎White Pepper -Ween
▪︎The Moon & Antarctica -Modest Mouse
▪︎Furnace Room Lullaby -Neko Case & Her Boyfriends
▪︎Rated R -Queens of the Stone Age

Shoutouts to Coldplay, Rage Against the Machine, The Dandy Warhols, Neil Young, U2, Steely Dan, Aimee Mann, Sleater-Kinney, XTC, Morphine, Eels, The White Stripes, and Air.

#2 Ryan Adams Heartbreaker If you can't listen to him then start burning your beatles , stones, acdc, led zeppelin albums now.
#3 Coldplay Parachutes Before they went pop.
#4 Madonna Music remember on holiday in nyc on the subway this album helped me ignore the crazies.

Enjoyed your lists, although I am finding increasingly less overlap with your lists. I'm aging, what can I say? Not sure how the rest of this decade will be for me since I spent it raising babies, but this ended up being a pretty good year. Stalwart faves like Calexico, Sleater-Kinney, and Steve Earle didn't make my top 5, so it had to be pretty good. Lotta love in these comments for PJ Harvey, which is well-deserved.

HM - Alvin Youngblood Hart - Start With The Soul, Iron Maiden - Brave New World, Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth, Lou Reed - Ecstasy, Popes - Holloway Boulevard
    5. Phil Manzanera - Vozero (For those who remember Frontera from the first Manzanera solo album, 1975's brilliant Diamond Head, this album comes at no surprise. Again he teams up with Robert Wyatt, who provides some of the vocals, percussion, trumpet and keyboard. www.allmusic.com/album/vozero-mw0000060013/user-reviews)
    4. Dion - Deja Nu (Dion created a magic record that transports the spirit of 1962 right into the year 2000 without sounding in any way nostalgic. The tracks rock and listeners who never would think of choosing a Doo Wop record all of a sudden get fascinated. The simple topics of cars, girls, and fun provide for seemingly simple songs. But we all know that "simple" songs are the hardest to write because if you fail, they are just trivial. Dion takes you right into his quarter, Bronx in the 60s, to spend a sunny afternoon with him - and you may just decide to stay for the night.
    3. Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (Last time they revived 70s hard rock, this time they add a lot of different styles to the basic formula and it works great. Be assured that you need no drugs or alcohol to enjoy this noise.)
    2. Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One (They got better and better with each release. Drummer Janet Weiss discovered her voice as well and the three voices/two guitars/drums adds another level of interaction to their songs that are the best they had come up with until then. Almost my number one if it were not for an even stronger female performer.)
    1. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (This is the album I had hoped she would be able to do ever since I heard her debut in 1992. It sums up all her strong points and she really tried to put her feelings into memorable songs. The full production helps a lot - the production sounds more conventional but is less distracting from the quality of her voice and songwriting than on previous records. And "conventional" with Harvey is still very far out...)

The Unutterable - The Fall. Given the state of the band at that time and a few years before, this was a remarkably good effort.

Solid album. Hands up Billy is hilarious. It makes me laugh out loud. The Fall are often funny as hell. Intentionally side splitting. Bremen Nacht on Frenz has me in stitches everytime. An insane rant, I think he's possesed by a GERMAN ghost. Brilliant and hilarious.

    5. Binaural by PEARL JAM
    4. Veni Vidi Vicious by THE HIVES
    3. Heartbreaker by RYAN ADAMS (Because it IS a damn good album)
    2. Daisies Of The Galaxy by THE EELS
    1. Rated R by QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.
Mass Romantic by THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS & Kid A by RADIOHEAD just missed my list by a hair.
Jason, I totally understand your feelings about Ryan Adams. I too went through a period of not being to listen to his music in the same light that I once used to. Hell, I went through a period where I couldn't listen to his music AT ALL. I will say though that I've come around to re-appreciate the man's music, and I'm not ashamed to still be a fan of his work. He's still a brilliant singer/songwriter and overall great musician and should be recognized as such. I think its important to separate the art from the artist. Its easy to put an artist/band on a pedestal and see them in a certain light and not really see them for the flawed human beings that they are. Everyone is flawed to a certain extent, and even the best musicians and artists are bound to do shady s*** and make bad decisions along the way. And to echo what Kramzer said, if we started holding artists accountable for their sketchy and checkered pasts (Jerry Lee Lewis, Ginger Baker, Dr. Dre, John Lennon, Chuck Berry, Miles Davis, Motley Crue etc. etc.) there would be very little to listen to. We can dislike the artist/band for the people they are, whilst still appreciating the art they produce. But hey, that's my opinion on the matter. Love you guys. Great picks as usual.
Jason, Joe, Kramzer - Cheers Dudes.

I agree, it's best to separate the art from the artist but Ryan Adams is a dirt bag for the way he treated women/girls. I can totally understand why that might taint someone's appreciation for his music. Especially if he's singing about love, women, etc.

    5. "Hybrid Theory" Linkin Park
The most nostalgic choice by these five for sure. I was just in the right age for this.
Several videos from it going on MTV (and the swedish music channel ZTV) all the time. I remember how much emotion it used to give me. It really doesn't anymore. I feel like I am completely done with it but to choose another album I semi-like today over it would be fooling myself.
    4. "Brave New World" by Iron Maiden
Many fans seem to look at this album as the best thing since sliced bread. I don't. I think it can be very repetitive.
Besides that I do feel the band had good energy and I like most of it. It could have been a bit shorter though.
    3. "Major Impacts" by Steve Morse
Instrumental album that is supposed to be a nod to his influences. I can't really hear the influences at all but I still like the album.
It doesn't really sound like his main three bands The Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band nor his time in Deep Purple. Probably an album many never heard of but if you like guitar-driven instrumental albums this might be for you.
    2. "Malèna" by Ennio Morricone
You guys have a rule against soundtracks, I don't! This is from a italian movie (worth checking out) and far from Morricones more famous western-themes. A very emotional piece that I think many would appreciate it.
    1. "Adventures of the Imagination" by Michael Schenker
Michael Schenker was a guitar-star early on with UFO, Scorpions and Michael Schenker Group but he really fell off most peoples radar at some point
despite doing many albums year after year. He did several albums in the year 2000 alone and this is by far my favorite of those. Great energy, riffs and solos. For me this the hidden treasure in his catalog and something I rate high in my collection of 1000 (+) albums.
As the countdown in Stockholm (Sweden) to the year 2000 it was "Europe" doing "The Final Countdown" on a scene in a remote area close to the water and lots of people seeing it from a distance. Good stuff.

I like Kid A. Definitely groundbreaking and original. But boy, when I first heard it back in 2000, I was disappointed. I was eagerly anticipating this album after The Bends and OK Computer, and I felt they turned 180 degrees for shear ‘coolness’ factor. Now, it has grown on me *a little* and it’s in my top 5 for 2000, but it’s my 6th favorite Radiohead Album. Fortunately, so far no one has required I turn in my Radiohead card....

Tough for me to sort out the top 3 on my list, I think each could have won in different moments in my life. I lie Kid A, but I dont find myself *always* wanting to listen to it. ATYCLB, by U2 is solid, but suffers from the records that follow being quite similar. So, by default I’m going with some new kids, Coldplay, who come in with some raw talent that will be refined over the next several years.

@@bryanbyrde8338, nice! Great album. Any time you get a popular band like Coldplay, you’re going to get the detractors. But if you go back to 2000, Parachutes was quite the surprise album. And while it has a couple hits, the deep cuts are solid, imo-and that opinion differs from a lot of folks on here. WHich is perfectly fine.
