Harlem River Blues - Justin Townes Earle 6. Brothers - The Black Keys 7. Lisbon - The Walkmen 8. Junky Star - Ryan Bingham 9. For One I Knew - Courtney Marie Andrews 10. The Black Dirt Sessions - Deer Tick 11. Other People's Songs - Damien Jurado & Richard Swift
HM - Hole - Nobody's Daughter, Motorhead - The World is Yours, Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Pills and Ammo, King Sunny Ade - Baba Mo Tunde 5. Robyn Hitchcock - Propellor Time (These songs seem so unassuming as they come out one by one that each time you get that sudden moment when you realize how deeply they each embrace you. And it happens 10 times in a row. The magic is that there is no telling how it is done - yes, I know, that is how magic works... Great songwriting, and brilliant performances by masters of the trade - Johnny Marr, Nick Lowe, John Paul Jones - and the Venus 3 - Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Bill Rieflin. The great John Lennon album that he could not make himself anymore.) 4. Grinderman 2 (With the first Grinderman album and Dig Lazarus, Cave had stripped down his music to rock'n'roll (kind of) but he did not stop there. On this album he adds various aspect of more experimental rock genres to the concept and while he does not invent them but rather adopts them, he knows exactly what to chose for which song and it all works fascinating well.) 3. Roky Erickson - True Love Cast Out All Evil (You do not need to know the dramatic life long struggle of the artist with his mental health to understand the hope and redemption he has finally found at the age of 63. He was treated as criminally insane which surely did not help him to overcome the demons of his schizophrenia. His 80s records are documents of his struggles but also how music played a role to rescue him. The document of a man who has found his way back into life. Okkervil River are an emphatic band to support him, this may even be their best album as well.) 2. Corin Tucker Band - 1.000 Years (A side project from Sleater-Kinney during their hiatus. It is unmistakably Corin even in a completely different setting pushing her limits even further with all the experience she has gained meanwhile. Working with new musicians to provide the foil for her guitar and voice is a challenge she masters easily. If "middle aged" means less urgent than this is true but it does not mean less intense. She has not made a disappointing album in her career yet.) 1. Black Country Communion - debut (The album delivered exactly what you would expect from the pedigree of its members. Glenn Hughes performed maybe the best vocals of his by then 40 year long career, and all lovers of 70s classic rock rejoiced. This record would have had the same impact in 1974 than it had in 2010 and there is no nostalgia here. I am the last person to claim that everything was better back then and this record proved that this kind of music could be made at any decade, you just needed the right people and spirit. Note - Joe Bonamassa also released an own album Black Rock this year that is my #12.)
The remaining 4 star albums of the year: 11. Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From a Young Man 12. Jason & the Scorchers - Halycon Times 13. Joe Bonamassa - Black Rock 14. Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave 15. Jon Langford - Old Devils 16. Robert Plant - Band of Joy 17. Buddy Guy - Living Proof 18. The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter 19. @@roxannewalsh Not sure if any of them reached the 4 star level for me but my favorites were Motorhead's The World Is Yours, Buddy Guy's Living Proof, Peter Wolf's Midnight Souvenirs, and Natalie Merchant's Leave Your Sleep. Thank you again.

Originally I thought that 2019 was the best music year of the 2010s. However, upon further consideration, I think 2010 was the best. Halcyon Digest and Causers of This are both classics in my opinion.

1 Brothers - Black Keys 2 Innerspeaker - Tame Impala (this space left intentionally blank) 3- Sea of Cowards - Dead Weather 4 Tin Can Trust - Los Lobos Live: Dream Attic - Richard Thompson, Mulennium - Gov't Mule
I would have Dream Attic in my list as well if it were not a live album. It is surely my live album of the decade. However, it may qualify since it has all new material that was just recorded in front of an audience to get the spontaneity of the performance. Anyway, it is a very good album.
@@roxannewalsh I tried to be cute with "(this space left intentionally blank)" to emphasize gap between 2 of my fave albums of past 15 years or so and next 3 albums. I completely spaced that this is a live album- duh! Maybe not quite to up to say 70's level but still- Live album of decade is high praise! Despite being brand new material- I'm gonna edit my post as it is indeed live. Cheers!

1. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest 2. The National - High Violet 3. Beach House - Teen Dream 4. Laura Veirs - July Flame 5. Vampire Weekend - Contra I’m definitely lacking in my 2010 knowledge right now and not super confident in this list except my #1. The Suburbs might make it in there somewhere, though the middle of that album sags a bit for me. Hot take: I prefer Reflektor to it. 😜🤪 The ArchAndroid is definitely one of those albums I keep meaning to get around to but haven’t yet. I’ll make sure that one gets in my 2010 rotation right away. I figured like almost everyone else that Kanye West would win for Joe since MBDTF seems to be the consensus best of the decade pick, and also another one I haven’t listened to. I did listen to The Final Frontier though and... ugh. Those last 4 Maiden albums after Brave New World are a draaag for me.
Ok gotta agree with you on Final Frontier...it starts well then sags a bit...but I rate the albums apart from that since Brave New World as excellent pretty much...
@@threestringsomg Admittedly I’m not the biggest Maiden fan so that same style being driven into the ground drives me a bit more nuts. Those later albums would probably be decent at 40-50 minutes though. Their length got me to wonder if I actually still thought Brave New World was ever good for me to begin with, lol. But fortunately it was.

@@greghansell5115 Yes, it's a great song and of course it features Ian McCulloch of Echo & The Bunnymen. Motorcycle Emptiness of The Manics is one of my top 10 favourite songs of all time. Why they never made it big in the U.S. is a mystery to me.
@@jesuschambers maybe they were too political...don't know. Any how, 'If you tolerate this, then your children will be next' is my favourite song from MSP. I also really like 'Ready for Drowning' of that same LP.
@@greghansell5115 I fully agree. A great band, a great album. In my opinion their best since Everything must go. I particularly love Golden platitudes and Don't be Evil ( an attack on Google ), Sadly Listography completely ignores them. I was due to see them for the 4th time shortly after this album came out in Oct.2010 but the gig was postponed until Jan 2011 due to JDB's illness. Since seen them a further 2 times - always excellent.

For anyone who grew up listening to blues based classic rock, the emergence of Black Country Communion in 2010 was a real ‘blast from the past’. Of course what they did wasn’t original or groundbreaking but they were excellent at repackaging 70s style rock for a new generation: 1. self titled - Black Country Communion 2. Mojo - Tom Petty & Heartbreakers 3. Brothers - The Black Keys 4. Innerspeaker - Tame Impala 5. Come Around Sundown - Kings Of Leon This definitely won’t be the last appearance from BCC or their guitarist in my lists!
@@independenceltd. classic rock was my first love in music but I have always been a fan of more mainstream rock such as the AOR scene. Tom Petty (RIP) was arguably one of the greatest at straddling the pop/rock crossover and I like most things he did throughout his career. Just discovered this channel and I am heartbroken about not having discovered it first when these videos were made :(. I'm of course still missing a lot of albums from your but here it is my top: Honorable Mentions: Diamond Eyes by Deftones, II by Crystal Castles, Teen Dream by Beach House, Congratulations by MGMT, Efemera by Tulipa Ruiz, Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol 1 by Chuck Person (a.k.a Oneothrix Point Never), The Age of ADZ by Sufjan Steven (which I thought would be mentioned by you lol), Race by Alex G, just got back from discomfort by The Brave Little Abacus and The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (a lot, I know.) 5. Shinsekai - Midori: an amazing Jazz-Punk fusion album, an the last album from an amazing Japanese band leaded by the magnificent Mariko Goto. This album is almost a farewell and it feels very demostrative and profound, with all the complexity that a (good) jazz album requires. 4. Vida - Canserbero: Amazing debut album by the iconic Venezuelan rapper that includes very deep lyrics from themes that varies from philosophy, religion and conciesness, to political and social commentary that hits really hard. Also amazing production and very good samples that makes of this boom-bap record a very versatile one. 3. Plastic Beach - Gorillaz: Again, amazed it didn't even receive a mention. It is not only best Gorillaz record, but one of the best pop albums of the whole decade. The whole experimentation Damon does that feeds itself from contemporany R&B to Hip Hop passing through Disco, Sythn, Funk, Indie Rock... it is just an amazing result and has many of the best tracks of that year (Rhinestone Eyes, On Melancholly Hill, Plastic Beach... it is a no skip album). 2. Clinging to a Scheme - The Radio Dept: A very underlooked album by this amazing Dream Pop Swedish band, that is probably the best Dream Pop project of the whole century, or at least one of the best. Not only the amazing musicality that transport you and touch you, but the deep and though-provoking lyrics make of this project one of a kind. 1. This is Happening - LCD Soundsystem: I'm just amazed not only of not having a single mention on the video, but even here in the comment section this album misses a lot of the love it deserves: it is the absolute best album of the year. It is a mix of absolute great tracks that play with the listener and are so intelligently produced you cannot just forget it is also a very popular album with million of listen, how it manages to convert a very complex disco-punk album with not that easy to listen but incredibly amazing music into a commercial success never fails to surprise me.

Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scout Niblett Honorable mentions: Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid Women - Public Strain Grinderman - Grinderman 2 Zola Jesus - Stridulum Crystal Castles - II Nails - Unsilent Death
Ah, the 10s. My decade. Had the entirety of my teens to digest all this stuff. 1. Teen Dream - Beach House (one of the best dream pop albums. Period. ) 2. Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 - Chuck Person (The birth of vaporwave, which is a great subgenre of psychadelic electronic music that im sure will go undiscussed on this channel which is cool, but for me and some people in my generation its a hotspot of amazing albums) 3. Public Strain - Women (A should-be noise pop classic. Great songwriting, great atmosphere.) 4. There is Love in You - Four tet (Heavenly electronic album. Puts me in a soaring mood everytime i listen to it) 5. Cosmogramma - Flying Lotus (Another great, kaleidoscopic and swirling electronic album) For me, this decade is where Expiremental and avant garde leaning music starts to have a more constant string of all out classic boundary pushing albums. This is definitely a bit of a shaky decade if you dont like this kinda thing, but if youre really into underground music and indie, this is a blast
Solid picks, respect to you -- it's amazing, the stature that Eccojams has risen to from its limited cassette release... had it in my Honorable Mentions (along with Lopatin's Games project), and Public Strain as my #1... the first Women album was my #1 for 2008, and I have a Women-adjacent record topping my 2011 list...
this is a really great year for me. so many landmark albums! winner: contra - vampire weekend runner ups: my beautiful dark twisted fantasy - kanye west dr dog - shame shame marina and the diamonds - the family jewels car seat headrest - 3 this will be the decade of car seat headrest for me, in that they were incredibly prolific throughout and almost never missed... their first 4 number albums are all not really comparative to the rest but i still think 3 is pretty great
@@kate-os5ww I absolutely love the entire album - been a fan since it was released - not a weak song on it imo - one of those albums I never get tired of - and Marina is so beautiful :)
1. Anathema - We´re Here because we´re Here 2. Alter Bridge - ABIII 3. Ghost - Opus Eponymous 4. Meat Loaf - Hang Cool Teddy Bear 5. Michael Buble - Crazy Love
Kramzer! Nice to see some love for Interpol's self titled. I love that record! 1. He Who Saw the Deep - I Like Trains 2. High Violet - The National 3. Bang Goes the Knighthood - The Divine Comedy 4. Interpol - Interpol 5. The Waves - Tamaryn
You know when an album is truly great when two of you rank it high on your top 5 and it just misses out on the other dude's list. The Suburbs by Arcade Fire of course. Arcade Fire, Marina, Manics, James, Eels, Johnny Cash, Vampire Weekend ... that sort of stuff for me.
The Suburbs and Plastic Beach are easy top 5 for me, and then ... wow ... I run out of gas! 2010 was a pretty tough year for me personally so maybe this has translated into my musical tastes. When the times are tough, I tend to go to what I know. Chances are I was listening to every Led Zep album back to back, and then starting over again when the last chords of "I'm Gonna Crawl" faded out. So I count my blessings and thank the powers that be that I've found you guys! The Final Frontier, eh, Joe? Okay, my man, I'll give it a spin! An embarrassing disclaimer: Tame Impala is from my home town in Australia, Perth. I bought their (his) first album, Innerspeaker, and I played it multiple times in a row and ... just didn't really like it. Sigh. So I might be one of the only people in the world that thinks Tame Impala is "meh" and this is doubly embarrassing because of the home town connection. My one real chance to be totally hip and I blew it. Such is life ...
2010: (Year Average 8.4) 1. Acoustic Sessions - The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (8.5) 2. Ruth - Nana Grizol (8.5) 3. Brothers - The Black Keys (8.5) 4. Women + Country - Jakob Dylan (8.5) 5. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire (8)
"Blake Mills ruined it for everybody, just like he ruins music" lol I'm dying Anyway here's my five. Probably need to listen to more: 1. Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (I think I used to like earlier Kanye better too, but this one has grown on me as his pinnacle achievement as a collective set of songs) 2. Deerhunter- Halcyon Digest (c'mon this one's great can someone at least mention it?) 3. Best Coast- Crazy For You 4. Crystal Castles- Crystal Castles II 5. Robyn- Body Talk
My runners-up to the runners-up are Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier and The National - High Violet. 5. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker (stunned it didn't show up in anyone's top five, let alone honorable mentions) 4. Agalloch - The Mantle of the Spirit 3. Alcest - Ecailles de Lune 2. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs 1. Beach House - Teen Dream All seven of these are four stars for me, but I suspect that the top two will rise from there as I listen to them over time.
🏆The Suburbs -Arcade Fire (the second half has a few songs I'm lukewarm about... but it's still worthy of the win) RUNNERS-UP: ▪︎Brothers -The Black Keys (blues-rock is alive and well) ▪︎Learn & Burn -The Sheepdogs (I love the 1960s throwback feel of this album) ▪︎Halcyon Digest -Deerhunter (interesting production mixed with some memorable tunes) ▪︎I Speak Because I Can -Laura Marling (consistently strong songwriting) JUST MISSED THE CUT: ▪︎Allo Darlin' (s/t) ▪︎Innerspeaker -Tame Impala ▪︎The Rainwater LP -Citizen Cope ▪︎The Secret Sisters (s/t) ▪︎The Union -Elton John & Leon Russell LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR: ▪︎Live At Hollywood High -Elvis Costello & The Attractions Shoutouts to Kings of Leon, Foals, Anais Mitchell, Angel Olsen, The Roots, Broken Bells, Massive Attack, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
This is one of the last years for which I can give a somewhat knowledgeable list: 1. The ArchAndroid- Janelle Monae (I agree with Joe!) 2. High Violet- The National 3. Teen Dream- Beach House 4. Sir Luscious Left Foot- Big Boi 5. Vying for fifth place includes a list of albums I admittedly need to listen to more. They are: Brothers- The Black Keys, My Beautiful, Dark Twisted Fantasy- Kanye West, Plastic Beach- The Gorillaz, The Suburbs- Arcade Fire, The Age of Adz- Sufjan Stevens, Crazy for You- Best Coast

I paused breaking bad for this boyz. Glad I did...and leave Jason alone...there’s always interesting stuff to check out in his top 5s you silverchair loving dummies Some gaping omissions for me but hey isn’t that what makes it great. I am kloot - sky at night (maybe you don’t know it. Brilliant) As Kramzer mentioned - the drums (brilliant) Plan b - the trials of Strickland banks (brilliant) Hotchip - one life stand (...wait for it...brilliant) The roots - how got over (with dear god 2.0 as I mentioned before - brilliant) Loved the national for a while and then dunno Got right into arcade fires debut so will give it a go Interested to hear Bilal and have a later Blake mills lp so again on the list Please do give I am kloot a spin if you get a chance.....produced by guy Garvey of elbow so fab strings, slow paced, great lyrically Oh and cause I paused breaking bad I’ll have a sixth one two door cinema club - tourist history (again surprised no one mentioned it) I’m fairly sober so perhaps lacking my usual exuberance
Happy Easter everyone! My Top 5 5. Scorpions - Sting in the Tail 4. Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union 3. Slash - Slash 2. Black Country Communion - Black County Communion 1. Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion Almost had Iron Maidens The Final Frontier on the list also but it needs new production. Then it might have shot in the future!
big time rush-btr, duran duran-all you need is now, david archuleta-the other side of down, crowded house-intirguer, blitzen trapper-destroyer of the void. the past few years it's been hard to find 5 really good albums every year......sometime I pick an album i've never heard but I like the band.
Best album of 2010, without question: Heligoland - Massive Attack Best of the rest: Queen Of Denmark - John Grant (if I hadn't watched a heap of your lists, I would have been astonished you didn't include this.) Loud - Rihanna My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West Pink Friday - Nicki Minaj
2010 was a very good year making it difficult for me to narrow it down to five picks. I agree with Jason that High Violet is the best album by The National. The Guardian also gave the number one spot to The ArchAndroid. An album completely off my radar. I'll check that one out Joe. 1) Catch my Shoe by The Ex. 2) Your Future Our Clutter by The Fall. 3) I'm New Here by Gil Scott-Heron. 4) Red Barked Tree by Wire. 5) Returnal by Oneohtrix Point Never. 6) Splazsh by Actress
More of a 4-star year for me. Difficult to pick any absolute standouts although as a single track John Grant's (I want to go to) Marz is one of my all-time favourite songs 1. Contra - Vampire Weekend 2. Queen of Denmark - John Grant 3. The Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens 4. Seasons of My Soul - Rumer 5. Bang Goes The Knighthood - Divine Comedy 6. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West 7. El Turista - Josh Rouse 8. Love and Its Opposite - Tracey Thorn 9. Postcards from a Young Man - Manic Street Preachers 10. Wake Up The Nation - Paul Weller 11. Long Live the Duke and the King - The Duke and the King 12. The Courage of Others - Midlake 13. The ArchAndroid - Janelle Monae 14. The Sea - Corinne Bailey Rae 15. Loud - Rihanna 16. I’m New Here - Gil Scott-Heron 17. Paupers Field - Dylan Leblanc 18. Transference - Spoon 19. Plastic Beach - Gorillaz 20. Abandoned Love - Trembling Bells
Haha Train really is the worst. Truly some of the worst lyrics around. My #1 is definitely Arcade Fire - The Suburbs. Runners up are: - The National - High Violet - MGMT - Congratulations and perhaps out of left field, Kylie Minogue - Aphrodite I listened to a bunch I thought would be #5 but nothing really fit so I'm thinking maybe I haven't heard my #5 yet and need to keep looking.
The worst year yet for me, I believe. Having scored through 2019, I can easily say it's the worst decade, for me, for music and I only found three new bands between those years that I love. Khruangbin, Tame Impala and London Grammar. 1) Inner Speaker - Tame Impala 4 2) The Family Jewels - Marina and the Diamonds 4 (First listen - she seems a bit crazy lol. But her songs are very catchy) 3) Come Around Sundown - Kings of Leon 3.5 (not usually a fan of them) 4) The Union - Elton John and Leon Russell 3.5 (Better than expected - wasn't familiar with Leon Russell) 5) Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - My Chemical Romance 3.5 (I always avoided this band but I like the two albums I've heard) 6) Teen Dream - Beach House 3.5 7) Brothers - The Black Keys 3.5 (I like them more than the white stripes for some reason /shrug) 8) ...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness - Ólafur Arnalds 3.5 9) A Thousand Suns - Linkin Park 3 10) Outbursts - Turin Brakes 3 11) Coat of Arms - Sabaton 3 12) Electric Toys - The Dig 3 13) Senior - Röyksopp 3 14) White Crosses - Against Me! 3 15) Congratulations - MGMT 2.5 16) High Violet - The National 2.5 17) The Fall - Gorillaz 2.5 18) The Suburbs - Arcade Fire 2.5 (I try but they never do it for me) 19) Band of Joy - Robert Plant 2 20) Opus Eponymous - Ghost 2 (I like their later albums much more) 21) No Better Than This - John Mellencamp 2 22) Foundling - David Gray 1 (VERY disappointing - I liked several of his albums) 23) Diamond Eyes - Deftones 1 24) My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West 0 (Don't get it at all)
I also thought it was a weak year. Not as weak as '08 (which I thought was the weakest year so far) but close. I'm hoping I'll get a few albums off the commenters or the Listographers that'll help me improve my view of the year.
Happy new decade guys!🤠 2010...a great start to decade with super strength in depth to choose from... 12 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West 7.5/10 (not my bag but memerable record...yep I'm thinking of the Crimson Scitzoid sample ahead of Crimson week...second half for me way better than first) 11 This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem 7.5/10 Highly thought of record. Like it, brilliant opener Dance Yrself Clean, but rest of album doesn't quite live up to that excellent start...unlike later record American Dream...which is waaaay stronger) 10 Band of Joy Robert Plant 7.5/10 (the lesser of his 3 great later albums) 9 The Final Frontier by Iron Maiden 7.5/10 (good but not the best newer Maiden....better to come!) 8 There is Love In You by 4Tet 8/10 7 Been Listening by Johnny Flynn 8.5/10 (forgot to enter the excellent A Larum album in 08...lovely duet with Laura Marling on this fab album...liked this a long time) 6 Dust Lane by Yann Tiersen 9/10 (his darkest record... beautiful and textured...) 5 (ll) by Crystal Castles 9/10 (my favourite by CC even though track 3 is so dirty as to be almost unlistenable...awesome...) 4 Barking by Underworld 9.5/10 (so under rated and has grown in stature since release) 3 Plastic Beach by Gorillaz 10/10 (my no.1 Gorillaz album awesome...my no.1 if another year) 2 The Suburbs by Arcade Fire 10/10 (despite creeping up as my sometime no.1 fire album, Ghost I feel are more relevant right now to me) 1 Opus Aponymous by Ghost 10/10🏆 (as important a metal debut as Black Sabbath in my eyes...Tobias is a brilliant songwriter and this is one of 4 times album wise he has proved it...so far💀💀💀💀...gotta see them and Opeth live asap!!!)
2010 was packed with music, much of it great, "as long as you overlook the satan worshiping stuff." Quote of the week by Joe. My own top 10 picks have a couple of repeated themes; the sunset on some great careers (Mark Linkous/Vic Chesnutt/Gil Scott-Heron) and some great collaborations. No room for Gorillaz/She & Him/Black Keys/Belle & Sebastian/Broken Bells/Natalie Merchant/Josh Rouse/Justin Townes Earle/Cee Lo Green/Paul Weller/The Roots/Sufjan Stevens/Vampire Weekend/Shelby Lynne who all did LPs I love in 2010. And Bruce Springsteen's 2 disc The Promise that fleshes out the creation of Darkness On The Edge Of Town is great. But I guess that is a compilation. 10 for '10 Your Future, Our Clutter - The Fall Although they had four more LPs in them this is the last complete LP that deserves to be in anybody's top anything. The tunes propel forward on a driving bass, drum pattern held together by Elani's keyboards. Mark E Smith is on-point for the last gasp of extended greatness. Bury Pts 1 + 3 starts like a distorted home recording and evolves into a hard-hitting powerhouse. Closing track Weather Report 2 may be one of the most sensitive things they ever recorded. Mark E ruminating on his mortality as he comes to terms with his recent brush with cancer. The ArchAndroid - Janelle Monae Perfectly described by Joe as "progressive science fiction in an R&B space." A great new talent arrives. National Ransom - Elvis Costello The previous LP Secret, Profane & Sugarcane was a disappointment. And here we are a year later with the same producer T-Bone Burnett, the same players and somehow we have a late-career classic. Supplementing the sound with the Imposters and other musicians makes all the difference. And he seems happier to write great songs instead of hollow replicas of other artists past glories. If you had been a fan and drifted away give National Ransom a chance to win you back. I'm Having Fun Now - Jenny And Johnny Jenny Lewis the indie Queen is also the Queen of collaboration. Herewith beau Jonathan Rice. This is a catchy, breezy 60's tinged pop that makes the most of their obvious comfort together at the time. It sounds easy and unified. A worthy addition to Lewis's considerable solo catalog. Dark Night Of The Soul - Dangermouse & Sparklehorse I am not convinced of Dangermouse's talent regardless of how many successful projects he has co-habited. Here he takes shared top billing but this feels far more Sparklehorse than anything else Dangermouse has done. Plenty of guest vocals, James Mercer, Suzanne Vega, Julien Casablanca, and LP instigator David Lynch. A farewell to Mark Linkous and Sparklehorse. I'm Here Now - Gil Scott-Heron The first LP by Gil Scott-Heron since 1984. He lost decades in prison or the fog of drug addiction. But this final studio appearance by Gil is some of his best work. We get reworkings of Bobby Bland, Bill Callahan, and Robert Johnson. The rest was written by Gil Scott-Heron. Previously he had written about drugs or the black experience in an almost journalistic style but, I'm Here Now is a personal lived-in experience. Nothing academic about these songs. Since Gil's death, this LP has been re-worked twice and every iteration is worth your time. Hawk - Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan The third and final collaboration of the Scottish/American odd-couple. Campbell left the 60's pop of Belle & Sebastian for a whole different look at classic pop. Here Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood's flavor of the American west is the template. Whether you are a fan of each separately is not relevant, together they create something special. God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise - Ray LaMontagne Striving to be the heir apparent to The Band on his 4th LP Ray La Montagne almost makes it. To be fair The Band comparisons do him no favors. But he is a songwriter that has that timeless earthy sound that the Band at their best also evoked. The Union - Elton John and Leon Russell My interest in Elton John stopped in 1973 with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, but he has always advocated for good artists and seemed to have great taste. And Leon Russell I only know from a few songs. But somehow this grabbed my attention and I am so glad it did. This is a tad mawkish at times but their voices blend beautifully and Elton John manages to restrain his more showbiz tendencies. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening The third by LCD Soundsystem and still one of my favorites groups of the 2000s. Maybe because they raid my record collection for inspiration. All I Want is straight from Bowie's Low, for example. There is something sincere about James Murphy's insincerity. He always sounds like he has his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, but can't help himself and lets real emotion slip through. Not as good as Sound Of Silver but enough to make a top 10!
I more or less agree with your comment on The Fall but I think their next album (Ersatz GB) with the same band line-up is still worth it. I could never warm up to the re-works of Scott-Heron's album. I still love his 70s albums and they sadly still appear to be very relevant today. Leon Russell's 1999 Face in the Crowd is the best of his later albums in my opinion, otherwise his good stuff is on the 70s record with Shelter Records, all have the advantage that they avoid that collaborator.
@@roxannewalsh I will give Ersatz GB another listen. I do remember liking it musically but the phlegmy guttural Mark E Smith barking I found too off-putting. It became hard to focus on the song just hoping he would clear his throat. I am sure he is deliberate in what he does, but it is hard on my ears. The relief when Elani sings Happi Song is palpable. But I would never discourage a fellow Fall fan, especially late period. There are too few of us. I was totally enamored with the Jamie XX We're New Here. To the point that I thought if Gil had lived he could be his new Brian Jackson. But those 70s recordings were incredible, so hard to match those. I was lucky enough to see Gil perform about a half dozen times. And yes sadly still relevant. Thanks for the Leon Russell recommendations. I thought about trying the documentary, A Poem Is A Naked Person. I saw it was in a Criterion edition. I am a sucker for a good music documentary.
Pretty good year, I get back to these records quite often: 1.Teen Dream. Beach House 2.High Violet. The National 3. Contra. Vampire Weekend 4.Lisbon. The Walkmen 5.Halcyon Digest. Yeasayer 17.Crazy For You. Best Coast 18.Plastic Beach. Gorillaz
Hello Fran: Another impressive list. I had all your top 3 under review but none made my cut except that The National was very close. I went with a top 5 plus 3 HM's. If I did a top 10 the National would probably be there. I will check outThe Walkman since they get some talk around here and elsewhere. Curious as to your take on my top 2.
Hey Naughty! I must admit hardly knowing anything about your top 3. Will definitely check them out. Glad we have a few in common. I think High Violet is a grower, some tracks need some time to reveal their greatness. Take care!
I can't believe how quickly time has passed. I discovered the channel when Jason was flying solo and now you guys are on 2010. My appreciation for Joe is no secret but all of you are just fantastic. Love the chemistry and love the channel.

HM - Hole - Nobody's Daughter, Motorhead - The World is Yours, Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Pills and Ammo, King Sunny Ade - Baba Mo Tunde
5. The great John Lennon album that he could not make himself anymore.)
4. Grinderman 2 (With the first Grinderman album and Dig Lazarus, Cave had stripped down his music to rock'n'roll (kind of) but he did not stop there. On this album he adds various aspect of more experimental rock genres to the concept and while he does not invent them but rather adopts them, he knows exactly what to chose for which song and it all works fascinating well.)
3. Okkervil River are an emphatic band to support him, this may even be their best album as well.)
2. She has not made a disappointing album in her career yet.)
The remaining 4 star albums of the year:
11. Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From a Young Man
12. Jason & the Scorchers - Halycon Times
13. Joe Bonamassa - Black Rock
14. Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave

I’m definitely lacking in my 2010 knowledge right now and not super confident in this list except my #1. The Suburbs might make it in there somewhere, though the middle of that album sags a bit for me. Hot take: I prefer Reflektor to it. 😜🤪
The ArchAndroid is definitely one of those albums I keep meaning to get around to but haven’t yet.

Manic Street Preachers is so underrated. I just love 'Some Kind of Nothingness' but the rest of the LP has some very good songs. Great choice!
For anyone who grew up listening to blues based classic rock, the emergence of Black Country Communion in 2010 was a real ‘blast from the past’. Of course what they did wasn’t original or groundbreaking but they were excellent at repackaging 70s style rock for a new generation:
1. self titled - Black Country Communion
2. Mojo - Tom Petty & Heartbreakers
3. Brothers - The Black Keys
4. Innerspeaker - Tame Impala
5. Come Around Sundown - Kings Of Leon

I'm of course still missing a lot of albums from your but here it is my top:
Honorable Mentions: Diamond Eyes by Deftones, II by Crystal Castles, Teen Dream by Beach House, Congratulations by MGMT, Efemera by Tulipa Ruiz, Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol 1 by Chuck Person (a.k.a Oneothrix Point Never), The Age of ADZ by Sufjan Steven (which I thought would be mentioned by you lol), Race by Alex G, just got back from discomfort by The Brave Little Abacus and The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (a lot, I know.)
It is a mix of absolute great tracks that play with the listener and are so intelligently produced you cannot just forget it is also a very popular album with million of listen, how it manages to convert a very complex disco-punk album with not that easy to listen but incredibly amazing music into a commercial success never fails to surprise me.

this will be the decade of car seat headrest for me, in that they were incredibly prolific throughout and almost never missed... their first 4 number albums are all not really comparative to the rest but i still think 3 is pretty great
Helo baby fromage - nice to see marina on your list - my clear #1 for this year :)
@@NaughtyVampireGod famiily jewels is really great. oh no is still a banger
@@kate-os5ww I absolutely love the entire album - been a fan since it was released - not a weak song on it imo - one of those albums I never get tired of - and Marina is so beautiful :)

4. Meat Loaf - Hang Cool Teddy Bear
5. Michael Buble - Crazy Love
Ghost and Michael Buble on the same list.... love it. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic "Honey, I can only come up with four. You wanna add the last one?"
Kramzer! Nice to see some love for Interpol's self titled. I love that record!
1. He Who Saw the Deep - I Like Trains
2. High Violet - The National
3. Bang Goes the Knighthood - The Divine Comedy
4. Interpol - Interpol
How the f*ck have Shout Out Louds passed me by!?!? Absolutely brilliant. Thanks Jason.
nice Jason!!! Shout out to my hometowns Typhoon!!!! Great record!!!
Love them. They’re new one from this year is quite good too. Jason
White Lighter making 2013? My fave of theirs.
Haven’t redone my 13 list yet. In 2013 I ranked it #16 so it’s a long shot. I think I like Hunger and Thirst more. -Jason
2010: (Year Average 8.4)
1. Acoustic Sessions - The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (8.5)
2. Ruth - Nana Grizol (8.5)
3. Brothers - The Black Keys (8.5)
4. Women + Country - Jakob Dylan (8.5)
5. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire (8)
"Blake Mills ruined it for everybody, just like he ruins music" lol I'm dying
Anyway here's my five. Probably need to listen to more:
1. Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (I think I used to like earlier Kanye better too, but this one has grown on me as his pinnacle achievement as a collective set of songs)
2. Deerhunter- Halcyon Digest (c'mon this one's great can someone at least mention it?)
3. Best Coast- Crazy For You
4. Crystal Castles- Crystal Castles II
5. Robyn- Body Talk
Cool you mentioned (ll)...love that CC album more than any others of theirs....greaaat loud
My runners-up to the runners-up are Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier and The National - High Violet.
5. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker (stunned it didn't show up in anyone's top five, let alone honorable mentions)
4. Agalloch - The Mantle of the Spirit
3. Alcest - Ecailles de Lune
2. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
1. Beach House - Teen Dream
All seven of these are four stars for me, but I suspect that the top two will rise from there as I listen to them over time.
Tame Impala kinda meh for me. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic kinda agree but they seem to have many fans here

Some gaping omissions for me but hey isn’t that what makes it great.

As Kramzer mentioned - the drums (brilliant)
Plan b - the trials of Strickland banks (brilliant)
Hotchip - one life stand (...wait for it...brilliant)

Interested to hear Bilal and have a later Blake mills lp so again on the list
Please do give I am kloot a spin if you get a chance.....produced by guy Garvey of elbow so fab strings, slow paced, great lyrically
Oh and cause I paused breaking bad I’ll have a sixth one two door cinema club - tourist history (again surprised no one mentioned it)
I’m fairly sober so perhaps lacking my usual exuberance

5. Scorpions - Sting in the Tail
4. Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union
3. Slash - Slash
2. Black Country Communion - Black County Communion
1. Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion

the past few years it's been hard to find 5 really good albums every year......sometime I pick an album i've never heard but I like the band.
That Janelle album is awesome!
Best album of 2010, without question:
Heligoland - Massive Attack
Best of the rest:
Queen Of Denmark - John Grant (if I hadn't watched a heap of your lists, I would have been astonished you didn't include this.)
Loud - Rihanna
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
Pink Friday - Nicki Minaj
I’ve never even heard of it. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Ha very ha!
Joe had an amazing winner this time around!
Once in a while I get things right. - Joe
More of a 4-star year for me. Difficult to pick any absolute standouts although as a single track John Grant's (I want to go to) Marz is one of my all-time favourite songs
1. Contra - Vampire Weekend
2. Queen of Denmark - John Grant
3. The Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens
4. Seasons of My Soul - Rumer
5. Bang Goes The Knighthood - Divine Comedy
6. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
7. El Turista - Josh Rouse
8. Love and Its Opposite - Tracey Thorn
9. Postcards from a Young Man - Manic Street Preachers
10. Wake Up The Nation - Paul Weller
11. Long Live the Duke and the King - The Duke and the King
12. The Courage of Others - Midlake
13. The ArchAndroid - Janelle Monae
14. The Sea - Corinne Bailey Rae
15. Loud - Rihanna
16. I’m New Here - Gil Scott-Heron
17. Paupers Field - Dylan Leblanc
18. Transference - Spoon
19. Plastic Beach - Gorillaz
20. Abandoned Love - Trembling Bells
Haha Train really is the worst. Truly some of the worst lyrics around.
My #1 is definitely Arcade Fire - The Suburbs.
Runners up are:
- The National - High Violet
- MGMT - Congratulations
and perhaps out of left field, Kylie Minogue - Aphrodite
I listened to a bunch I thought would be #5 but nothing really fit so I'm thinking maybe I haven't heard my #5 yet and need to keep looking.
The worst year yet for me, I believe. Having scored through 2019, I can easily say it's the worst decade, for me, for music and I only found three new bands between those years that I love. Khruangbin, Tame Impala and London Grammar.
1) Inner Speaker - Tame Impala 4
2) The Family Jewels - Marina and the Diamonds 4 (First listen - she seems a bit crazy lol. But her songs are very catchy)
3) Come Around Sundown - Kings of Leon 3.5 (not usually a fan of them)
4) The Union - Elton John and Leon Russell 3.5 (Better than expected - wasn't familiar with Leon Russell)
5) Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - My Chemical Romance 3.5 (I always avoided this band but I like the two albums I've heard)
6) Teen Dream - Beach House 3.5
7) Brothers - The Black Keys 3.5 (I like them more than the white stripes for some reason /shrug)
8) ...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness - Ólafur Arnalds 3.5
9) A Thousand Suns - Linkin Park 3
10) Outbursts - Turin Brakes 3
11) Coat of Arms - Sabaton 3
12) Electric Toys - The Dig 3
13) Senior - Röyksopp 3
14) White Crosses - Against Me! 3
15) Congratulations - MGMT 2.5
16) High Violet - The National 2.5
17) The Fall - Gorillaz 2.5
18) The Suburbs - Arcade Fire 2.5 (I try but they never do it for me)
19) Band of Joy - Robert Plant 2
20) Opus Eponymous - Ghost 2 (I like their later albums much more)
21) No Better Than This - John Mellencamp 2
22) Foundling - David Gray 1 (VERY disappointing - I liked several of his albums)
23) Diamond Eyes - Deftones 1
24) My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West 0 (Don't get it at all)
I also thought it was a weak year. Not as weak as '08 (which I thought was the weakest year so far) but close. I'm hoping I'll get a few albums off the commenters or the Listographers that'll help me improve my view of the year.
Janelle Monae best album.by a mile.
Easily the inheritor of Prince's musical.genius legacy
Happy new decade guys!🤠
2010...a great start to decade with super strength in depth to choose from...
12 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West 7.5/10 (not my bag but memerable record...yep I'm thinking of the Crimson Scitzoid sample ahead of Crimson week...second half for me way better than first)
11 This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem 7.5/10 Highly thought of record. Like it, brilliant opener Dance Yrself Clean, but rest of album doesn't quite live up to that excellent start...unlike later record American Dream...which is waaaay stronger)
10 Band of Joy Robert Plant 7.5/10 (the lesser of his 3 great later albums)
9 The Final Frontier by Iron Maiden 7.5/10 (good but not the best newer Maiden....better to come!)
8 There is Love In You by 4Tet 8/10
7 Been Listening by Johnny Flynn 8.5/10 (forgot to enter the excellent A Larum album in 08...lovely duet with Laura Marling on this fab album...liked this a long time)
6 Dust Lane by Yann Tiersen 9/10 (his darkest record... beautiful and textured...)
5 (ll) by Crystal Castles 9/10 (my favourite by CC even though track 3 is so dirty as to be almost unlistenable...awesome...)
4 Barking by Underworld 9.5/10 (so under rated and has grown in stature since release)
3 Plastic Beach by Gorillaz 10/10 (my no.1 Gorillaz album awesome...my no.1 if another year)
2 The Suburbs by Arcade Fire 10/10 (despite creeping up as my sometime no.1 fire album, Ghost I feel are more relevant right now to me)
1 Opus Aponymous by Ghost 10/10🏆 (as important a metal debut as Black Sabbath in my eyes...Tobias is a brilliant songwriter and this is one of 4 times album wise he has proved it...so far💀💀💀💀...gotta see them and Opeth live asap!!!)
Yessss, Ghost. Yesssssss. - Joe
🤩💀💀💀💀💀💀
10 for '10
Your Future, Our Clutter - The Fall
Although they had four more LPs in them this is the last complete LP that deserves to be in anybody's top anything.
The ArchAndroid - Janelle Monae
Perfectly described by Joe as "progressive science fiction in an R&B space." A great new talent arrives.
National Ransom - Elvis Costello
The previous LP Secret, Profane & Sugarcane was a disappointment.
I'm Having Fun Now - Jenny And Johnny
Jenny Lewis the indie Queen is also the Queen of collaboration. Herewith beau Jonathan Rice.
This is a catchy, breezy 60's tinged pop that makes the most of their obvious comfort together at the time. It sounds easy and unified. A worthy addition to Lewis's considerable solo catalog.
Dark Night Of The Soul - Dangermouse & Sparklehorse
I am not convinced of Dangermouse's talent regardless of how many successful projects he has co-habited.
I'm Here Now - Gil Scott-Heron
The first LP by Gil Scott-Heron since 1984.
Hawk - Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
The third and final collaboration of the Scottish/American odd-couple. Campbell left the 60's pop of Belle & Sebastian for a whole different look at classic pop. Here Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood's flavor of the American west is the template.
Whether you are a fan of each separately is not relevant, together they create something special.
God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise - Ray LaMontagne
Striving to be the heir apparent to The Band on his 4th LP Ray La Montagne almost makes it. To be fair The Band comparisons do him no favors. But he is a songwriter that has that timeless earthy sound that the Band at their best also evoked.
The Union - Elton John and Leon Russell
My interest in Elton John stopped in 1973 with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, but he has always advocated for good artists and seemed to have great taste. And Leon Russell I only know from a few songs. But somehow this grabbed my attention and I am so glad it did. This is a tad mawkish at times but their voices blend beautifully and Elton John manages to restrain his more showbiz tendencies.
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
The third by LCD Soundsystem and still one of my favorites groups of the 2000s.

Take care!
