They opened the Australian leg of their 2006 world tour in Sydney with Release. The performance was sublime. From then till now it remains my favourite PJ song. This song, the music, the lyrics, resonate and remind me of my dear dad. We lost him to cancer early last year. Three months after he passed I was diagnosed with the same cancer that took him. I’m in remission now but when I hear this song I think of my dad and my children and contemplate what it means to be released. Thank you for sharing this experience. I very much appreciate it.

Thank you for the comment, @enigmaticdropbear. Your experience seeing them open with "Release" in Sydney mirrors my experience seeing them open with the song in Seattle during my second-ever Pearl Jam show in 1995. I'm sorry you lost your father. Also, stay strong with your current battle. You can win this challenge by remaining positive and manifesting your recovery through visualization and positive thinking. Another dropbear, but you're an enigmatic one! I hope you too were in last nights crowd to see em again open with Release, it was a tear jerker for sure.
The pain shall heal. Everything has a cycle. You will be everything he expected of you and more. Know that if nothing less he’s got your back. For whatever you believe in our fathers care and don’t give up. EVER. That’s my promise to you.
This song is probably the most listened to on the playlist I compiled for my dad's funeral and any time I need a good cry. Nothing else truly reflects my love for and loss of my sweet dad like this one. ❤✨️🕯❤️🔥🙏🏾🫶🏾
Release is my favourite pearl jam song, it's lyrics have a deep meaning to me as I have struggled to have a productive relationship with my father which is the theme of the song, thanks guys for this song it really means a great deal to me.
In the 1995 era they would begin this song in almost total darkness and become silhouettes as the song progressed. I saw them open with this song in 1995 at the Moore Theater in Seattle and this version in Seattle was a near recreation of that moment for me. I loved it and glad I caught it on my iPhone.
Met my dad once when I was 8 years old and haven’t since him in 41 years. Wish I could meet him again. This song hits me all the time. I wish he could see me now.
SO GLAD you got this. Was there with my brother, just like every Pearl Jam show I’ve ever been to. This band, all the opening songs we’ve ever heard (and spent time excitedly guessing, “what song do you think they’ll open with?”,) ….they all mean so much. What a night!! I filmed a little of the beginning, but then put my phone away for the night, so thank you.
Thank you for sharing this! I can't explain it, but I have always had such a deep emotional connection with this song........ "I'll wait up in the dark for you to speak to me" just annihilates....... Hard to explain why some words put together can do that, but holding back tears is hard..... And then hearing a whole audience of people singing it.....Absolutely beautiful, I wish there were more human moments like this in this world.
Just came from their first Sydney, Aus show last night and they opened with Release, which they haven't played at any of their other Aus shows this tour and the tear that rolled down my face from the emotion this song provokes was so unexpected but joyful and i can't stop reliving the moment (post show blues). Amazing what music can do to you.
They did the same in Lisbon once and I immediately started crying, my body in a shiver! Tears that I didn't even get to interpret, just feel. Absolutely magical, deep deep song.
Exactly how I feel. I had to think of which one I'd choose before I went to this show, and choose it too. Then I went to the show and saw them open with it weeks later. I wasn't this close though, this is incredible.
Agreed. This is the best Pearl Jam song ever. I love how it ends their debut album, but when they play it live it's always the first song and it's so fitting that way.
I have seen Pearl Jam 38 times. They opened with this song the second time I saw them on Feb. 6, 1995 and I didn't see it again live for 21 years until they played it at Wrigley Field on Aug. 20, 2016. I'm hoping you'll get to see it. Best chance is to go to a few shows in a row when it hasn't been played in a while (if you can).
Cannot stop thinking of ppl who have lost their parent and getting thru this song without crying . Also I think of my parents every time hearing this song and hearing the fans sing this at the top of their lungs. Man I don’t want to lose my parents at all . I know that day will come later on but fuck I wish that the world would end and we can just all go together instead. I love my parents so much . Pearl Jam will be my healing
I really feel this statement. I've seen this song live 10 times (in 30 shows) - but my Dad has always been alive. I lost him earlier this year and will be seeing PJ 3 more times in the fall. I know it will hit different this time.
Both of you move my heart. God bless you both, I ❤ you both. This is a beautiful song. May you experience it live when / while they tour. Thankyou for sharing.
I will always remembered when they opened with this in Chicago at Soldier Field. The best moment? The pause and then they launched into "Go" and people who had surged forward wanted none of the pit that followed. Me? I dove in.
Great video, love the subdued tones and lack of spectacle - must be tough for them to play their band's hometown with all the expectations, but must be so comfy at the same time. Go PJ!
I hope you know this already, but someone caught this moment on video, also with a perfect soundboard recording. The first time I saw Pearl Jam play "Release" live in Seattle in 1995 at the Moore Theater, the performance was just like this with darkness and the band members as silhouettes. Pearl Jam fans are so blessed that these guys have weathered the storm and stayed a band for 34 years and counting. They've been my favorite since I was 14 and can't believe I'm still seeing them kill it 29 years later.
I had a similar experience with a favorite band. They're not common, and those of us who receive such moments are most fortunate. 🙂 This is in the top 3 non-pro (I'm guessing here) concert videos I've seen on YT. It captures the moment and the song extremely well. Congrats on that.
