    You have to love the french people. Government does something they don't like? Protests. And not only protests. No. Protests for days.       I wish it had an impact, but a million people on the street doesn't make the government listen... Even the polls state that 93% of working people (Hence paying for retirement) are against it and the government forces though... I'm proud that my people stands against all of this, but I'm ashamed of our representatives. In a democracy, you should at least listen to your people, negotiate and compromise, not treating it like an annoying fly...

Now im not soft on the rich in no way whatsoever, but we must recognize that "tax the rich" has its limits. What Britain needs is simple reform of expenditure not more income.

      @@falconeshield 64 is the age My dad passed away. Asking years for an early pension, while recovering from two heart attacks, and his heart being monitored with a pacemaker ! Oh, and he was in construction.
      So 2 years can be the difference between spending your limited time on earth left with your family, or killing yourself in a difficult job !

      @@2mac_mini952 where did you read that there was a funding problem in France ? There is a group of expert to check this fund, and they clearly said that there was no problem. But European Union wants that every country limits its ratio of funding vs PIB (I don't know the english letters sorry...).
      So it is a choice to reduce the funding , the system is well balanced. But french system is not open to capital, and some financial groups want to profit of it.

    A French man's life expectancy is 79 years. Raising the retirement age means he can expect to have 15 years of retirement instead of 17, that's a 12% reduction. Now let's be honest you are lucky if you are not bedridden and pooping in your hospital gown after age 72.
    Those precious 2 years Macron just stole were 2 of the 10 best years that a person works 50 years to earn.

The amount of public money we lost when they got rid of taxes on the wealthiest, whose profits broke records during the pandemic and post pandemic periods - they weren’t too worried about deficits.

      Art. 49.3 allows that but it's normally used for emergency situations or if we are in a rare "alternance" Situation. Never for an important structural vote !!

      There's a clause that allows for it. The problem for Macron is that he might have a hard time justifying himself in this instance. I don't know that this situation qualifies, even though I actually think he's in the right on the pension reforms.

      Do you know anything about French history and why and when the 49.3 was introduced? If you werew I doubt whether you would have written what you wrote. This is perhaps why it's so irresponsible of the Guardian to have a Comments section in the first place. (I expect that, ideologically, we're quite close, but I've lived and followed left-wing politics in France for over 30 years so would like a voice in all this. This being social media, it's those who issue the most provocative statements that will prevail (at the expense of this who perhaps know what's really going on). This is how Trump happened!

      they were going to vote against it , that's why he used emergency powers to force it. That's the main reason for the revolt. The bill is not just about age, everythign about it is wrong. French retirement funds are at balance because we financed through our taxes a fund to anticipate demographic shift. This fund is full and exedentary , they want to use the money to fund green energy and have us work two more years. They want to steel the money.

      @@billal2731 Actually there is no retirement age in Australia (except for judges as per constitution). So citizens can claim for the aged pension when they are 67. The only jobs with retirement ages are judges at 70 years old, and fair work Australia presidential members where it is 65 years old.

      And it will get worse, many countries are having a demographic crisis with way too low childbirth rates, how many pensions can a country provide with a fast ever-shrinking active/working taxpaying population? My generation will see retirement in their 70s or maybe never. That's one of the downsides of people not having kids

    The issue is not raising the age per se. The issue is all the countries who did in Europe got their pensioners poorer. French pensioners are the 2nd richest pensioners after Luxemburg ones.
    The present French pensions system is in no way close to collapsing. It was beneficiary in 2020 and 2021.
    The present system works well and does not need to be changed.
    There will be a very small deficit in the next years, which could be funded very easily, like raising women's salaries to men salaries or getting the financial incomes to contribute a little.
    French are hard-working people, and you can see this in the OEDC reports when comparing countries' private workers yielding.
    Finally you have to know it's very hard for older workers to find a job. To have to work 2 more years will be in reality to be on social paiements for 2 years. This is less than 600 eur per MONTH for everything

    The actual age french people can retire at the moment is 62 years. In Germany in comparison it is 67 years. I am pretty sure that if there was an affordable plan to leave the retirement age for the French as ridiculous low as it is now, the government would support it.
