Honestly I think it was just a clean race by IndyCar standards. Good mix of strategy, minimal cautions, and great wheel to wheel battles. I hoped for more action at the front, but Newgarden was just locked in for the race today
I think it helped that there was even more off season testing because of the hybrid this year. Even if you run the Daytona 24, there's nothing that gets up prepped for a low downforce no power steering open wheel car like IndyCar runs.
Colin Braun is a very talented sportscar driver. It's his first IC race w a shit team but he is a good driver. It would have been better if he got this chance several years ago. I am surprised he's not with a GTP team this year...
I think despite some issues later on this weekend showed that there was a serious disconnect between Grosjean and the Andretri car/team because he did objectively great pretty much all weekend but he DEFINITELY did better than with Andretti. Honestly until that clipping and power failure he was just steadily working forward. He's still who I'll be rooting for all season just like last season.
I wouldnt expect IndyCar to have "good" race until the hybrid units come in. All the tires were designed around the heavier cars and the lighter cars is leading to minimal tire deg. We all know how low tire deg hurts race action.
Colin Braun should have been in IndyCar a decade ago. He's an IMSA champ and an FIA Gold rated driver. He also owns the fastest lap ever turned on the Daytona oval. But at 35, this opportunity is coming a bit too late. Its cool he'll have a few goes at Indy races but he's still got a long sports car career ahead of him too
He accidentally sabotaged Canapino's race twice last year, and Illot got non stop death threats from Argentina that Juncos did nothing about while the rest of the series was outraged. After Laguna Seca, Juncos dropped him after most of silly season was over out of spite.
Newgarden did say team Penske worked hard to improve their road and street course package in a pre-race interview. Turns out he was right and Penske isn't fucking around.
I tried to watch Indy based on your recommendation, but I just couldn't get through it. Constant ad breaks, annoying commentators who sound like they're commentating an NFL game (and read even more ads), and honestly not even that much action. And the TV direction was somehow even worse than F1, and replays have nothing indicating that they're replays other than the commentators saying so. F2 honestly had more wheel to wheel action, and a much more watchable presentation.
It's a toss-up of whether the teams like the format they used for Practice 1, but it was definitely better as a viewing experience. So many Practice 1 sessions last year started with half an hour of teams sitting on pit lane waiting for the rookies to lay down some rubber before they went out. Then you'd have everyone rush out in the last 10 minutes and try to get a clean lap, but the track was so congested that everyone would stack up just before the Alt Start/Finish line, and nobody would *actually* get a clean lap. As a viewer, most Practice 1s last year were boring, this was way better.
