Dr. Thomas is an excellent presenter--clear and thorough. Let's see her more often.

I'm always interested in CR's car reviews, but this may be the first one that put a smile on my face. Emily Thomas was terrific!

Almost $80k and it comes with a vanilla 255 hp 4 bangers. Eww.

Doesn’t the 48V hybrid system electric motor add boost to the 255-HP gas engine when you ask for maximum acceleration?

Agreed, 255 and 4 banger aint nearly enough for an e class at this price.

That produces more power than the base inline 6 it came with 40 years ago. Back when it cost $100k in today’s dollars.

The dust and fingerprints on the screen would drive me insane. Also, the ambient lighting close to the windshield would annoy me as well.

It’s a fair review. Aside from its shortcomings, MB has done a great job of keeping a lid on pricing for the E350. I have a 2014 and it’s similarly equipped but has a sublime V6 minus the tech and it was new $66k. I bought it a year old for $42k.

I had the same one .
But was missing my 2002 E-350 with the rear wheel drive .
      Now I'm having 2014 S-550 . Very happy with it !

I bought the E450 and I love it. It’s loaded with the options I wanted. I paid 82 and it is worth every penny. Just took it out of town for a 4 hour road trip and the ride was perfect.

$80k for a 4 cylinder seems insane. On the other hand, that interior looks really beautiful and well-done. Compared to the 5 series and A6, this probably has the nicest interior.

standard seats are at best very average (rental in Germany), worse than an Outback (own). The dash and how everything comes together, does not make it feel luxury compared to earlier generations of luxury cars; new 5 series are also guilty of it. So much screen looks like a cost cutting exercise; you now struggle to tell the difference between the different models. As you noted the steering wheel controls are an absolute annoyance.

    • @pacmanc8103
      @pacmanc8103 7 месяцев назад

To actually attempt a comparison Bette an E-class and an Outback is nonsense. The dash of the E-class exudes class (particularly the non-hyper screen versions), where metal finishes are actually metal, unlike Subaru, where they are coated plastic. Completely different leagues, sorry.

I hope when I am still alive we get past this trend of getting carried away with the screens and other gimmicks. I have been assuming these were things younger drivers wanted so it was encouraging to hear a younger driver like yourself complain about them also. I am in the market and would otherwise consider this car (the 450...no four banger for me) but the excessive doo dads has run me off.

$77K really good price for a fully loaded E but the Engine is so small and gutless even with that small battery. 😢. I’m sure there will be issues after 4 years after the warrantee is up. Just like every German car

The lighting that syncs with the music is for sex in the back seat, Mom. Just sayin' 🤣🤣
Great review. I really wish auto companies would get their act together with those touch screens and fancy twist-'n-slide knobs though. It shouldn't take an IQ above room temperature to adjust heating and cooling or set cruise control.

Expect a million problems when you buy this car. The simpler C class car CR tested gets a reliability score of 19 out of 100, or an F-. Besides electrical problems they have mechanical problems as well. Stay away with a ten foot pole if you know what is good for you!

I had a 1987 I think, black 560 SEL with sienna brown color interior, reclining back seats with 2 different heating modes! And heated front seats, with a little leg rest on the floor in the back. Won’t even get started on the comfort and reliability. Now I got a 1995 e320 sedan gold with beige interior much simpler , med size and better gas mileage which I actually like even better… Both were reliable like a German tank. But I would never buy Mercedes or any car above 2000 because wiring and electronic issues are constant on every modern car. I like it when my car is mostly made from gears and screws lol, and newer cars look like they’re dead with no soul lol.
