18 years of "enhancing" NBs trying thinking I was gradually creating the perfect dual use road and track car. Then the current car died and I bought a standard NBFL. What a nice car to drive on the road. And enough for the track.
There’s some SERIOUSLY great advice in here, for real; young people should take so much note of what has been said here. I learned exactly all of what has been said here by doing it the wrong way first and learning how bad ‘race car’ is on the road and then you really do stop wanting to use it and drive it because it’s uncomfortable and miserable as you’ve actually ruined it. Best Miata now is factory car with light mods; some uprated ARBs and sports springs with good tyres can be perfect road Miata. ND2 with the BBR 220bhp kit; cam upgrade, exhaust manifold upgrade & remap (FLying Miata sure do something similar) = Perfect do everything Miata. Drive daily, drive at weekend, drive across country, carve the canyon and country road, and drive on track lap after lap (add some good pads and braided lines). It will EXCEL at all those things like a normal Miata but turned up to 11 yet no compromise made to daily use ability and comfort so you will LOVE it and always want to drive it for any and every trip 👌

The alignment specs you have on the site are great. We set everything to those specs as close as we could before my first track day and the car had so much to offer while cornering and under throttle and brake even while stock.
Recently got my first Miata! 1993 and rust-free, but I am now working on getting it even cleaner. Currently trying to make it look as if it just came out the factory. These videos are amazing. It's great to see so much new content about a 30 year old car.
It's definitely good advice to be careful to not go too far on a street car. I had a front wheel drive car years ago that I wanted to get more direct acceleration from (it was an automatic, so kind of just making up for that somewhat, in my mind). I put in solid engine mounts. The car shook so much that when I had the steering wheel at certain angles at red lights, the keys would actually jingle if I didn't put it in neutral. It was funny at first, but after a few weeks it was pretty tiring to drive like that. At first, my wife thought maybe it was tiring because maybe I overdid the suspension, but just reverting to stock engine mounts just before selling the car, the ride quality was improved considerably to where the aftermarket suspension was totally not a concern. Wish I'd reverted the mounts sooner. But sunk cost fallacy had me thinking it would be a waste.
Great overview that applies to most cars and why we need to keep trade offs in kind when modding our daily driver. Years ago it was not a pleasant surprise to find out how my rear toe out for autocross made a rainy drive to the airport memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Great great video! Very honest from someone selling car mods, big credit to FM!! Engineering a car like the Miata is extremely complex and Mazda knows how to get the right balance like no one, or the Miata wouldn't be around anymore, certainly not after 35 years. For the street, for the fun, out of the box these are truly wonderful. Trying to improve them for the street on your own or by watching RUclips, the odds of getting it worse are at least 80%. So listen to people who are experienced and think twice before you pull the trigger !
One of the best investments ive made when changing the exhaust was getting a good quality slip in baffle for long trips/early mornings the poor mans active exhaust
A great video. It made me more comfortable with keeping my 1994 NA stock when it came to replacing the shocks, etc. It is important to understand the tradeoffs.
The best advice for anyone who just wants it to work without hassle is non adjustable anything. I wanted a project and bought the flyin miata VMaxx sport kit and spent the last 6 months dialing in a ride height and the compression/rebound knob for my use case.
Hi all! Thanks for sharing all this info! I'm on ITBs stock exhaust, and sometimes its a little bit hard the long trip on highway, but it becomes wow in twisty roads, tried hard engine mounts, waste of money(too many vibrations everywere everytime) take the OEM and a external absorber, like a ministrut! Poly bushings are great, on diff as well! ecu...speeduino (buy something else if you feel the need of tune) is too simple and sometimes becomes frustrating because on tunerstudio you could have so many things to tune. Lower eibach prokit, and tein with adjustable dumper, love them(because never tried something else) lowness is not a big problem. no power stearing, meeeh you feel everything and I mean everithing, buuuut the downside is that you will have a heavyer steering wheel, always! Flying Miata will definitely get my money if I ever modify my ND, honest suggestions that arent barely hidden sales pitches are so very very appreciated from an aftermarket parts producer. Around the 38min mark, does the blue ND, great color by the way, I had a 3 hatch in that color, have a nail/screw in the tire? If so I hope it got spotted before the owner drove home after the shoot.
First Miata, I made all the mistakes loud exhaust and a ridiculous suspension with high spring rates, I also had a lot of fun. Second Miata, only touched what needed touching and didn’t go too far (and went too far for most people) but it’s fast and still nice. 2002 SE voodoo2
The Recaros in my '21 Club daily driver are great...except when I can't move my back around on a long trip. I don't mind going grocery shopping in my Miata, but I don't have kids in the house anymore so the groceries fit just fine. I do run RT660s in a 225 on the street, but I have a truck to drive in bad weather. I didn't lower mine as it is a daily driver. I haven't tracked or autocrossed this car as I don't trust the longevity of the transmission. I feel the ND is the best Miata Mazda has made for the driving experience, but at the same time it makes me not want to buy another Miata. I say that as I just had to have my soft top replaced at 20k miles under warranty as it was literally falling apart. All of the transmission problems may be overblown, but they affect the way I use the car. The trim pieces flying off the windshield even when people have not had their windshield replaced. The fragility of the finish on the Recaro's, the steering wheel, and the trim around the windows on my car. This is my 4th Miata over 25 years starting in 1997....and sadly probably my last Miata.

I think the idle speed should generally stay the same, but the downside is that it becomes much easier to stall the car. You can go a few pounds lighter, like what Mazda did with the M2 1001 and 1002 to still keep it reasonable but not insane on the road.
Lighter within reason is a very streetable modification. It shouldn't affect idle but as Graham says, it will make launch a little more difficult. The Flyin' Miata flywheels are designed to be very streetable while still improving response.
Absolutely fantastic commentary! I've done the trackday street car build route on a 944 turbo and I found myself driving it less amd less on the street 😢

@@mazdaspeedrx8 We appreciate it! Yes, we clearly state CARB legality for each CARB-legal product we carry. We also have shipping restrictions in place that will prevent CARB states from ordering non-CARB-legal parts, such as our catalytic converters.
Re: can't have brakes too big- there's a point though, where your brakes are oversized for the stock sized bore of the master cylinder. I've not seen a replacement master cylinder available from anyone that sells a BBK (mostly looking at NCs) and I'm hesitant to upsize if I'll just get a mushy pedal.
That comment was about pad and rotor size. You can increase those without affecting the piston area, which means your stock master cylinder will remain matched to the calipers. It’s all about correct brake system design.
I want to get a lightweight aftermarket muffler but most leave a void which people claim acts like a parachute and/or creates instability even at highway speeds. There’s the diffuser solution, but then it’s adding back weight and potential complexity. Thoughts?
I added a Verus diffuser to my ND after I added the Roadstersport exhaust on my car. The diffuser weights 3-4lbs, max. The weight savings I got from dumping the OEM exhaust more than covers the weight of the diffuser.
@@vagabondsoldier4353I was considering the super street single tip with verus diffuser, but when I did weight calculations based on figures found online, I think it was a wash. At that point I figure might as well keep it stock because I don’t want to deal with spending time figuring out the best angle to install the diffuser, and it getting in the way when I need to wrench underneath, or debris being trapped under there. I could potentially save weight with the roadstersport race but I don’t want an exhaust that is too loud. Actually, the quieter the better. The quietest aftermarkets weigh more or about the same as stock, but nothing is quieter than stock. Just wondering if I’ve considered all my options, or if my calculations were wrong. I could live with the sound of the super street only because I’m a little bit of a weight weenie 🤪.
Is fox compatible with Stance universal air cup kits? Appreciate you sharing your thoughts, experience, knowledge, Boss Tanner. Stay safe stay blessed, y'all ❤
We've never tested them, but we expect they're probably compatible for the NA/NB platform. They're probably not compatible for the NC because of the design of the factory rear upper mount. We'd have to know more to say anything about the ND. Basically, there's nothing about the Fox in particular that is likely to cause a problem.
My mechanic told me something interesting... that coilovers will ALWAYS be less comfortable than stock suspension. Is that true, even for like Ohlins R&T coilovers??
That's definitely not true. It all depends on the design choices made in the coilovers. Ohlins on the Miata, for example, have less suspension travel than stocl. That can cause ride quality and roadholding problems on larger hits and crests. But a coilover designed with travel in mind does not have these limitations.
Speaking of bump stops and shocks. Do you sell bump stops by themselves? Also, years ago i put koni yellows on my 91 and i had to drill out the hole for the shock top if i remember right. Would that still work when i replace them this summer? Have they updated the konis?
We do sell bumpstops alone, yes. flyinmiata.com/products/improved-bump-stops The Koni Sport install on the NA has not changed. They need to have the upper shock mount drilled out to deal with the 12mm shaft.
Helpful stuff. It would be amazing if you guys could start adding chapters to your videos. The FM Live videos are great, but they are also very long and cover a lot of topics. I often avoid them because I know it will take too long to find the info I'm looking for. Adding chapters would increase the views per video for sure.
Nevermind. I just noticed the last FM Live video before this has chapters. So I guess you add them later on? Side note: If each "I made a whole video about this" were accompanied by a link card, that would be super helpful too!
That is correct, they are added after the final, edited video is uploaded. It's not possible for us to add chapters live. We have so many past videos that it can be difficult for our editor to add links to every single reference that is made - we'd recommend searching our channel as they are all pretty easy to find!
I remember from another video the NC has a rear shock top that allows more travel. Is there any way to do something like that for the NB? I already have the koni's about 3/4 turn from soft in the rear & sways full stiff to save my fillings.
honestly depending on suspision setup stock sway bars are best. they add little to handling and sometimes you'll just lose ride quality with no actual improvement in handling
Any ND owners switch to Superpro Bushings from OEM. I have the complete suspension kit but have not installed yet because don’t want to ruin the street ride quality.
@treeskier802 There are so many variables involved that we aren't really able to say which one is the better buy without a lot more information about each car. If you send our Customer Support Team an email with details and pictures of each car, they'd be happy to try to help! Support@flyinmiata.com
Different engine. Even if it were the same engine, a RWD swap would be a big undertaking because you'd have to turn the engine 90 degrees and find room for the transmission as well as a rear differential and driveshafts.
@@FlyinMiataVideo no worries. This is a long term goal. Not had my nb long but the project is intended to be a daily lightweight trackable street car to try and achieve a decent power to weight without going V8 and overwhelming torque. It may end up being expensive and unnecessary. If I do go carbon panels I don’t want it looking like a patchwork quilt. No issue being able to see the weave on close inspection but would probably ultimately get a new clear coat with a colour tint in it so that to the untrained eye it looks like a black car.
Keith here. That car was built with a full cage before the door bushings were a thing. The full cage made them redundant so they never got fitted. Maybe someday now that it’s lost the front of the cage. They don’t really have a downside, so there’s not much to talk about in the context of this video. Door bars, on the other hand, have some serious downsides for street use.
That's why I do OEM+ street builds on my cars. Wheels, nicer tires, a decent set of coilovers, a few exterior modifications, interior modifications, and depending on the car, maybe some mild boost. Anything more than that, in my opinion, gets pretty dumb and useless for the street.
I think one important thing is to know the end goal and have a plan to get there. If you don't have that yet, go to some meets to see what you like. And then ask a lot of questions about the cons.
The Toyo R888R is an asymmetric tire, but not a directional one. It's an odd design choice on their part because it really does look like they're backwards on one side of the car, but that's how they are designed. They are mounted properly.
It’s in the background because it’s on the lift as part of the development of our new NC turbo kit! It’s not exactly pushed into a corner and ignored. We are spending more time and money on NC development right now than all the other generations combined. You will be getting a LOT of NC content as that gets close to release.

I think performance wise I'm just doing oil catch can now since I'm dailying and trip driving this 2023 ND GT.
Not a bad idea!
Look into amplifier handles for flush door handles.
@kylebayes4711 Interesting suggestion - thanks for sharing!
Ohlins DFV? Rated? Vs Fox. For street and occasional track.

Goodwin racing single on my Nc . Can't complain. 😊
I'm not aware of any lightweight mufflers that sound any good. If you're looking for an easy decrease in weight, Antigravity is the way to go.
Hi, one the blue one, what is the tyre and wheels dimension?
Thank you

@@FlyinMiataVideo thanks you. I'm suprise the NA is in 17!!!

The owner's manual of my 1993 says the never tow anything with your Miata.
I'm sure Mazda's lawyers still agree with that :)
We do sell bumpstops alone, yes.
flyinmiata.com/products/improved-bump-stops
The Koni Sport install on the NA has not changed.
We have so many past videos that it can be difficult for our editor to add links to every single reference that is made - we'd recommend searching our channel as they are all pretty easy to find!
need the active exhaust for for my supercharged na asap!
That would be super nice! Thanks for your suggestion, we'll forward it on to our engineers.
Would you say that a mx5 2001 nb1 1.6L would be able to handle a turbo without causing problems?
If it's a well designed turbo and you have good engine management, it should have no trouble at all.
I remember from another video the NC has a rear shock top that allows more travel. Is there any way to do something like that for the NB? I already have the koni's about 3/4 turn from soft in the rear & sways full stiff to save my fillings.
Give us a call or email us and we'll try to help troubleshoot your setup.
You haven't mentioned changes to sway bars
honestly depending on suspision setup stock sway bars are best. they add little to handling and sometimes you'll just lose ride quality with no actual improvement in handling
We've got an entire video dedicated to that! The first mod we recommend! :)

Any ND owners switch to Superpro Bushings from OEM. I have the complete suspension kit but have not installed yet because don’t want to ruin the street ride quality.
Sorry, can't answer this one but thanks for watching. On the earlier platforms, I can say that they did a good job of keeping it streetable.
What carbon fiber front lip is on the blue ND?
It's from CarbonMiata.
Would you buy a 97 Miata with 100k miles for $8000 or a 94 M edition with 80k miles for $11000?
@treeskier802 There are so many variables involved that we aren't really able to say which one is the better buy without a lot more information about each car. If you send our Customer Support Team an email with details and pictures of each car, they'd be happy to try to help! Support@flyinmiata.com
I onky have a cam angle sensor on my na 1.6. Is it necessary to get a crank angle sensor too when going standalone/turbo?
It's not required, but it does give your standalone more accurate information.
??? 2000 Mazda protege 1.6 is it the same engine as Miata b6??? Mine is fwd can it be RWD swapped
Different engine. Even if it were the same engine, a RWD swap would be a big undertaking because you'd have to turn the engine 90 degrees and find room for the transmission as well as a rear differential and driveshafts.
What’s the durability issue with carbon panels?
I'd treat them the same as any other fiberglass panel. They're stronger but they'll splitter if they get hit hard enough.
Thanks. I’ve never had a fibreglass car or panels but I don’t intend to hit any of my panels, steel or fibre or otherwise.
Also, if the weave is visible the clearcoat generally is fairly short-lived.
@@ClarkyXPH Sounds like a fun project. You'll have to share some progress pictures with us along the way. Good luck with it!.
full race build but no reinforced door bushings?! haha :p
Keith was simply too fast on track, so he had to add some restrictions.
But seriously, good eye. We'll give him a hard time for this!
@@FlyinMiataVideo Haha! Yes, one of the first mods I made on mine, and I expected him to comment on those regarding the subject...
What color is that blue ND in the back??
The blue ND in the video is a 2019 in Eternal Blue.
But merely a mention of "All Season" PP4's tires.
Are you referring to the Pirelli P4's? We don't have any experience with that tire, for what it's worth.
Strangely, (I guess) I tend to tramline on purpose, allowing it tofollow that natural line
Thanks for sharing.
I'm so tempted to build my Miata but I gotta keep reminding myself it's a daily. My FRS is the build. But it's just so tempting lol
And then ask a lot of questions about the cons.
blue miatas tires are on backwards
The Toyo R888R is an asymmetric tire, but not a directional one. It's an odd design choice on their part because it really does look like they're backwards on one side of the car, but that's how they are designed. They are mounted properly.
NC?
There's only so much room in the studio! Everything mentioned applies to that platform as well.
Traction on or off
Everybody has a different driving style so, you decide. If you're faster, that's the right way.

There's one in the background, we only had room for so many cars in the shot. And what we talk about applies to all generations. Don't limit yourself!
@@FlyinMiataVideoyeah always in the background - you guys seems to limit yourselves to the NA NB & ND. Come on,
put the NC forward.
It’s in the background because it’s on the lift as part of the development of our new NC turbo kit! It’s not exactly pushed into a corner and ignored. We are spending more time and money on NC development right now than all the other generations combined.
You will be getting a LOT of NC content as that gets close to release.
