31 Year trainee in Wing Chun here Dan. Absolutely spot on video. Rarely seen on RUclips of basic fundamental teaching of the Tan Sau including, entering, shifting, and hitting at the same time. Well Done.
I love this video… I use to know this kid he was so tough. He had mastered the art of telling when someone was gonna hot or kick and would dash in first. It always works because it’s the element of surprise mixed with speed. It throws the attacker off because it goes against everything we humans do naturally. Thank you. This is one of my favorite of your teachings.
Thank you for your videos and your teachings. I have survived street attacks and street fights and usually is from bigger opponents who will use boxing as a method of attack. Self defense could be complicated. For me it goes down to knowing what works for my body type and psychology. Panic and fear will come, for those reasons I keep it simple, am a moving target and my attack is always lethal. Even after a good four decades I still practice the exact same routine step by step. The question for me has been, how do I beat some one who is better and stronger on my worst day. Many great technics won’t work for everyone, we are limited by our physical abilities, is up to the student and teacher to find out what that is and practice what will work. Thank you for indulging me and I hope you continue making more videos.
Just subscribed to your page. I just want to say thank you for these helpful videos. I've trained in Taekwondo for a year and would still get bullied a lot because it was mostly defense and escapes I was learning. But with your style you demonstrate in these videos I feel more confident in protecting myself but more importantly I feel I can attack and defend almost simultaneously. Thank u again for your videos they are really helping me be more confident and calm in scary situations.
A really good proper hook punch is usually at middle distance and comes straight in from the side and is almost impossible to block with any Wing Chun block because the punching arm is bent at right angles and goes right round that type of block and not executed with the arm extended out like you are showing and practicing with this drill. Think you should teach them how to do a proper boxing hook first before trying to defend against it.
I agree, hook punch is exactley the way you described it, and that is the reason why is so dangerous. Coz if somone has a long hands, it s even worse. When his elbow is bend about 90 degrees, he dont need to much power to knock someone out. For me, the best and safest way to defend from the hook, is to bow your head.
You are right that a hook normally looks like that. But if a wing chun martial art is able to keep distance from the boxer, this move would be able to be perform and block it.. it because yes a normal hook usually comes from middle distance and comes straight in from the side, but usually if the boxer isnt able to rush in with weaving and slipping the boxer would have to extend that arm to reach the head of the oppenent. For example, joe frazier and mike tyson had to leap in and extend their hook to reach the oppenent. When extended, wing chun can block it, when not yes it should not be able to. (btw don't try to do it to mike tyson or joe frazier, they would blow you arm off haha)
I've been doing martial arts for years and I can tell how good and instructor is from one demonstration. And after this vid. . . SUBSCRIBED lol WELL DONE
MY OVER TALENTED MASTER DAN LOK, WHAT AN AMAZING THING AGAIN ! I' VE DONE THAT KIND OF DEFENSE LATELY THIS MORNING! OH MY God, To you ONLY and always be the Highest Glory forever and ever! Amen 🙏🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌
music works well for reflex/timing and stamina training, pick a move to do on every note and do it through the whole song, the pace will change throughout the song but you can use a metronome it you want a steady pace
Where was the hook? I didn’t see a hook. All I saw was a sloppy straight-armed windmill. A hook has a bend in the elbow that will go right around your block. It’s also a shorter-ranged lunch.
@Master Monkey well this kind of technique work for street fight and self defense. Not for an crazy guy who fight with a boxer because an 10 years old kid tell him to do that 🤣 P/S: Dan had made a video for some Winchun guy trying to box with a boxer so check it out
@Master Monkey honestly, I see how it works but you would have to have a lot of fighting experience to pull it off.. not saying its impossible but you would have to be someone like Mayweather (with incredible reaction time and has to know what hit is coming) to pull wing chun off. I did some boxing so yeah im not a wing chun fan boy.
New subscriber from London. Love the video. Fresh air, brilliant views and clear precise instructions from a very informative Sifu. I learnt under Grandmaster Victor Kan many years ago as well as under Sifu Tam Yiu Ming who was taught under Grandmaster Leung Ting. Took a long break but have been training everyday for past few months. Recapping on the three forms and I've also just installed the wooden dummy at home. You gave me the bug back. Thanks. Stay safe.
yes this video its good.you let us see what happen if you do tan sau. or you hold palm of the hand side way in oure whing chun we do the palm of the hand side way. cause its stronger i practise whing chun lineage wan kam leung.and most time go forward if someone atack you.greetings from the netherlands. and sorry for my bad english
I realize the hook punch is the most difficult to deal with for most systems, but this method could be dangerous. Aiming for the inner elbow to block means near impossible to block a taller fighter. His forearm, thus fist will meet your face before you can block the arm. There are better techniques applied in WC that would work better imo.
In the lineage that I practice that block which looks like a reverse tan sao is called bil sao where you 'cut' into the punching arm while you deliver the counter-attack at the same time.
Sorry Dan but when you move forward your left arm is not a tan sao anymore. Check your video. It looks more like a modified left fut sao. But i'm a fan.
Very good! Do you do "The Chinese Windmill"? A double sideways round swing sweep - first to the nose, second to temple. Repeat on each forward step. Or first to the hands, then nose, then head. And so on.
I like your break down and explanation of the techniques. One thing I have not seen explained by any martial artists is "can you break your hand or knuckles when you do a straight punch to some ones chin (chin bone)?
This is very interesting. I'll most likely practice something similar to this in it's essens as I see it and filosofi. Thank you for the lesson it was indeed very interesting and useful info.
That's a great technique practice Wing Chun and that's one of the first things I love that and I do know for a fact the way you demonstrate it it do work you can set up multiple moves to combination choices of striking and ability that you can hit the strike at the same time and seconds
I liked the video. You showed a really good technique to stop the hook. The only thing I would say that wasn’t really a hook. It was a swing. But regardless, the principles are the same. Nice one! 👍
i really like all your videos Dan,around my neighborhood what i need the most is the how to block and how to knock a bitch out videos!!not my first choice but unfortunately a much needed survival skill in my world thanks for all of em🌸
I hope you will read this, but i think your ton sau (from the point of the video) looks straight up; You need to have it at an angle (if your head is at 12 oclock, left hand needs to be at 10:30) so it will slide down your arm, also your elbow looks collapsed (fist and thumb distance) from your chest to your elbow during the ton sau. Could be wrong though.
Master Dan lok great to watch ur martial arts video clips. Its very short techniques and aggressive bt I also want to watch the kicking techniques more ..not only fist
Wow. This is really something special. It's truly one of a kind. It is as if you managed to combine every possible wrong reaction into one wonderfully horrible maneuver. Throw it in a time capsule and jettison it into space and maybe some alien race will see it and feel such a minute level of fear in our combat capabilities that they will make first contact knowing they have absolutely nothing to fear. First, the farther out your block is from your body the less it blocks. It's simple physics man. Stretch out your arm and pull it with your other arm. It will move. Move your arm closer to your body and pull it with equal force. It will move less. Pull your arm in close to your face and pull it with equal force. It probably won't move. That's why boxers don't extend their arms. It's completely useless. Second, in western punches most of the power is generated before the hook punch makes it past the person throwing it's body. It's mostly a rotation thing. You want to get a good rotation, and you want your elbows close to your body so your core is tight. Which, by the way, holy cow do you and your students throw absolutely dreadful hooks. It looks like they're swinging pales full of sand. Anyway, because the punch loses power the farther from the body your elbow is the farther away you are the less impact the punch will have. So, not only is stepping into a hook insane but the step in and block with a less effective block is quite bonkers. Third, you have about .5-.25 seconds to see a shoulder dip and react to a hook punch. This method requires you to re-position, raise the right arm, assess hook vs. straight, figure out the angle, absorb a ton of impact and punch back in that exact same time the other person has decided 'hook' and then throws it. Can that happen over a dozen punches. Yeah, probably once or twice. But you'll be absolutely obliterated in between and when it does work it won't actually work. Fourth, people tend to throw combinations and guard. A hook will be followed by a body/face guard or a straight/uppercut. The thing being done here, effectively a push, isn't likely going to stop the next thing coming your way. Fifth, what happens if the boxer throws a hook to the body? Answer: you just missed a block completely and exposed your kidney. Your feet aren't set to absorb impact because you are trying to throw a punch as you block. So, you get dropped.
Its interesting because no one style is best for everyone,, and wing chun tends to work best for those with fast reflexes and an analytical mindset... Whereas muay tai works better for those with a more ferocious attack and kinetic mind type... Bruce Lee took this concept all the way by doing away with style altogether in favor of whatever works best for you... And even then to not get trapped in those moves or techniques either...
It’s all down to perception speed. When an attack happens up close, it takes a fraction of a second to land a punch. Not many people have the neurological responses to deal with non-telegraphed strikes up close, especially straight punches. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed any martial artist who has mastered this skill, hence the reason why every fight turns into a mess when it gets up close.

In the world of boxing. From my experience is the stepping inward. This moves the intended target which is the jaw and chin. Taking a hook on the jaw or chin from a trained fighter . Not good. Love your videos. Keep them coming.
Wing Chun doesn't have one way to deal with a curved high attack...there are several... Tan Da, Pak Da, Go Bong Sao, Strike with angle and or kick... I find the simplest is to just strike and if the timing is correct and the angle is correct and you step in well the block is the strike... And don't forget the Faan Sao...
Very good video for beginners. I'm happy to be trained the correct way when it comes to simple blocks like this and I think its quite a pity that many wing chun practitioners do this wrong!
Dan Lok, Please read in Full!! i have always wanted to learn the martial art and i do believe in Bruce Lee's teachings. Their is no one Style better than another it depends on the person. I have a lot of anger issues just like Bruce i am a skinny athletic guy with a similar form. I would learn how to nurse those bad habits with anger and truly learn to express myself in the form of Martial Art. I wish i could ask you to be my teacher, I've watched a handful of your videos and have given them all a thumbs up and subscribed I'm in North Carolina . If there is any way that you might be able to reach out to me please my friend, i want to be like water if not then reach out to my soul and let me know that you are here if not spiritually then mentally. Dan Lok this is awesome,I'm loving it...
As always...Thank You Dan for teaching us. Much appreciation & respect for you.
You show quite interesting Bruce Lee footage which aren't found in RUclips!
what if they went for a hook then a cross?
31 Year trainee in Wing Chun here Dan. Absolutely spot on video. Rarely seen on RUclips of basic fundamental teaching of the Tan Sau including, entering, shifting, and hitting at the same time. Well Done.
Common method: Block first, hit second. Wing Chun: Block and hit at the same time. JKD: Hit first, block second.
Well bruce lee does hit first then block so that the opponent dony have a chance to punch
For jkd we actually don't block we deflect but ya.. we will hit because an extended arm naturally blocks
No bro jkd means hit first to defend
Wow!!! When U see danger, you move in... Thats the key I've been missing!!
Welcome.
if you turn your body slightly towards the punch while executing the tan sau it will greatly improve the structural integrity and not collapse
I love this video… I use to know this kid he was so tough. He had mastered the art of telling when someone was gonna hot or kick and would dash in first. Well done! All the moves are understandable and explainable!
Yes.. A simple change can alter the effect.. Very powerful

Great idea to add the pseudo- intensity around 7:10, helps reflexes and actions under pressure of attack.

Cool.
BullyBilly.
What bro!!!!
Thank you I haven't fight yet
A HAND SALUTE FOR YOU AGAIN MASTER DAN LOK!

There is only one way to have no fear. You have to practice in real street fighting.Greerings from Greece.
Great technique. I can see clearly how this will set up several offensive strikes. Thank you.
My pleasure Patrick
I was practicing this yesterday
I tried it on my dad when I got home from school but he still knocked me out..
nice technique, (HTC group 3), Thank you

Yes when ur palm is down its way better and like you said forward energy, you can't wait good videos bro keep it up
very useful, even for me being a boxer
Hello Dan, I was wondering if you’re accepting students for Wing Chun training? I’m located in Vancouver and would love to learn from you!
Thank you!
I like your break down and explanation of the techniques. One thing I have not seen explained by any martial artists is "can you break your hand or knuckles when you do a straight punch to some ones chin (chin bone)?
Yes. But I'd not expect it if I were punching someone.

I also think like you. This blocking doesn't work against a professional hook punch. You can count the stars if you hit by a Real hook punch ✨💫✨
Always great master lok

I am a William Chueng student and I agree round force must be met or what we call face the point of contact
Awesome.
Excellent master, excellent.
Nice and inspiring video,thanks Dan
Always...excellent videos!
Great communication of principles and applications of Wing Chun.

Good stuff Dan. Hooked.
Very Good Class IMM. Enjoying THIS
very good explanation and execution marry christmas i' am a fun of simplicity i could say in almost everything!!.
Very effective offensive defense technique, but i would like to see the students respond from both sides to left and right randomly real hook punhes.
Keep doin ur Thing, excellent work
Good point. Good video
I LOVE your Wing Chun videos. You are an excellent teacher. Please keep making these. ☺💪
Terri, good. Continue watching more in my series here: ruclips.net/p/PLEmTTOfet46N9uEUTCHQfwbmaRNlPjKiU

Really so Nice Master😊😊😊
Thanks again
Hey Dan, I'm a beginner and love Bruce Lee and is this for beginners to watch?
It’s all down to perception speed. When an attack happens up close, it takes a fraction of a second to land a punch. Not many people have the neurological responses to deal with non-telegraphed strikes up close, especially straight punches. Even Bruce Lee was trying to solve this perception time problem just before he died. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed any martial artist who has mastered this skill, hence the reason why every fight turns into a mess when it gets up close.
sifu dan this is gold:)i am in ore love to train under you sir
Thats great for long hooks ,what about short or front hand hooks?
Hi Dan, I was hoping you would make this stop hit video. I also prefer turning the arm as well.
Also, Bruce always remained calm and loose until his fist made contact then he tensed up it increased his speed.

@@michanowak1687 Dear Michael, what I meant was he wanted to expand his training in the way of stopping the fist. It was a modification.
Better with rotation?
In the world of boxing. From my experience is the stepping inward. This moves the intended target which is the jaw and chin. Taking a hook on the jaw or chin from a trained fighter . Not good. Love your videos. Keep them coming.
Awesome , this one of favourite moves, I guess , as it the ovious. Beautiful Sea in the Background. ❤😀
Good stuff. Thanks
Thank you very much for teaching us great practical fighting techniques, such as a combined bock & strike like a knife. 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Right On!
Cool stuff man i wonder where is that beautiful lake/ ocean and maple leafs

This is about the stance. So with boxing, your strong hand is back (either right hand or left). With JKD, your strong hand is forward?
On the Columbia River Washington State?
Great.
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND SOME ONE AND WERE TO TRAIN .BUT ONLY RECENTLY ,I HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRY PUT INTO IT. IT ALSO IS HARD FROM WERE I LIVE .
We can also try the opposite hand Pak sau from the Siu Lim Tao
Thank you
Remember: Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.
