+P OConnor oh, that's cool! my favorite is probably phoenix by fall out boy because that's the song that got me into them, and they're my favorite band :P
im watching this, thinking back when my life wasnt so trivially consumed by such menial and tedious matters, and not regretting a second of my life back then
I posted this as a reply about the interpretation of this song but felt it was important enough to merit a post of it's own so more people might read it.... I agree with your first interpretation of "Control yourself, take only what you need from it" meaning to have self control and only take what we need from the earth, as that is what caught my ear when I heard it today for the first time and is why i'm here now. I disagree with the other parts. "You were a child. Crawling on your knees toward it". I think this represents our attraction to nature as children "making momma so proud" - mother nature = momma "but your voice was too loud" - in our innocence we didn't have the proper cautionary behavior as we groped in awe at nature. "we like to watch you laughing" - Nature itself enjoys mans presence and interaction WHEN we do it right and with proper respect. "you pick insects off plants, no time to think of consequence" - still a child interacting clumsily with nature and not thinking about how our smallest actions has an impact on nature. "Family of trees wanted to be haunted" - unsure but maybe a reference to nature wanting to be interacted with by man in the way it should be and not the way it is. I would like to point something out about this suicidal problem. It's popular to point fingers at the corporations etc for the environmental problems that WILL cause mans extinction in the very near future (maybe a gen or two left). It's all of us. Consumerism with it's roots in greed is the real problem. Consider what over eating does for example. It causes more farms and hence farmland (treeless flats) to be needed. It causes more fertilizers to be used, more cows (and other sources) to be raised which requires more feed and more bio gasses to be released. More fuel to be pumped and burnt to get it to market. More electricity used to refrigerate and so on. It also wastes money which could be used to help others. Consider what consumerism does. It causes more minerals and metals to be extracted. More fuel for the machinery to do it, more toxic run off, more factories belching crap into the atmosphere. More trees to package the goods. Look at Christmas morning and the bags of trash generated for a good idea of how wasteful we are with packaging. All of this for crap we're conditioned to desire but also conditioned to not want when the newest version of crap hits the market. Then this crap ends up in a yard sale and eventually a landfill. Not only does this conditioned consumerism cause each one of us to be a cog in the machine destroying the planet and hope for our children but it also enslaves us all. At the top (industrialized nations citizens), we must have more money to buy this crap we won't want in a year or so. We must work more to earn it and oh so many are willing to cut each others throats to get that slightly fatter paycheck. We turn a blind eye to the injustice of low wages for hard working people so we can get it a little cheaper. We turn a blind eye to the starving masses and those literally slaving away for pennies to make shoes (or whatever) that we pay outrageous prices for and the corps make insane profit margins on off the pain and suffering of those who have little choice but to be exploited... if they want their families to eat for another day. We go into debt to buy it all the while selling our future selves into slavery to repay the debt for stuff we no longer own or want. Of course then we have less expendable income because of the debt and go even more into debt while the ultra rich laugh their ways to the bank. When our children must suffer being born into a world on the brink of extinction, we need not point the fingers anywhere but into the mirror. At 54 it pains me so badly to know this truth it often brings me to tears. Especially when you also know in your heart that we could all have paradise if we only cared for others as much as we do ourselves. You don't need a religion to know this simple fundamental truth...
If you're as young as you appear in your pic and you see some of the truth's I spoke of, then I would quote Pink Floyd by saying "welcome to the machine". The same machine depicted in the old silent movie "Metropolis" where the workers are fed to the machine in the bowels of the city. If you can stomach watching a silent movie, Metropolis would be the one to watch as there are many messages hidden in metaphor about what we (who have awoken) are up against.
+The1stDukeDroklar I presented to your comment to my college cultural ecologies class (with my interpretation of other lyrics) and they were mind blown. I would love to check out that film, it seems as though it should be something people of the cusp of the 90's (1997 was my birth year) need to see.
This song makes me tear up whenever I hear it. It reminds me of when things didn’t matter and having no worries as a kid... it was one of my favorite songs growing up
I feel like the last sentence (treeeeeee) is like us telling ourselves repeatedly to stop and limit our harmful actions but we don't listen, carving our own paths into exitinction. But we never stopped. And that last part is like us reminding ourselves of what we tried to do, before our deaths.
so, it seems that i'm the only one who came from the tumblr post that just says "i'm going to mix a can of redbull with seventeen shots of espresso in a fishbowl and then chug it while kids by mgmt plays in the background so i can perceive twenty-three special dimensions and fight my own soul" "this is self-care"
It is one of those songs, you can never full understand. But for some strange reason you can relate to it, with such strong feelings. Its truly enjoyable.
mmm my interpretation is basically about hurting the earth. control ourselves take only what we need from it.and so hence trees wanted to be haunted. basically chill out dont take too much out of the earth your hurting it?
Quite often, song lyrics don't actually mean what they say. For example: "Losing My Religion" is not about religion, but about how he is drifting away from his SO.
These kids. I bet all of them know the web from front to finish. Know their thrusted into a world where everytning is backwards. I want all you parents to think of how different it was when the T.V became main stream. How different it was! Just remember that. Please.
It's talking about the change that occurs from the innocence of childhood in general and the simplicity of it. Then when it has the verses "decisions are made not bought. I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot but I guess not." Is referring to the change that occurs when faced with the reality of life on earth as an adult. As you are transitioned into responsibility and having to make things meet, the pain of life becomes evident. And the song in general is painting a picture of this dichotomy between the newness of life but yet the scary reality of it. That's why it says "the water is warm but it gives me shivers" then it says "a baby is born." It's giving us the perspective that in the midst of this scary life something beautiful is actually happening at the beginning of it but it's soon to fade away. This is why it says in the chorus "Control yourself take only what you need from it" because you can't have the expectation that life will continue innocently because there will be a loss of freshness. So when it says "A family of trees wanted to be haunted" It's ultimately saying that we choose to lose this joy that we start out with. We ultimately want to be haunted by our past and our decisions because we don't naturally think of the consequences. And this is the truth of life in this song.
If you look at their other song "Time to Pretend" you will see that both these songs speak of the same thing. "Time to pretend" just goes through a specific scenario of what "Kids" speaks about in general.
I've just heard about them right know. I've listened this song due to a DJ remix and that was my favorite song ever. Just recently, I've heard the original sound. Just by accident at Spotify. Touched me profoundly.
