    To the best of my knowledge, the Ranchero was the first American release to use the ute concept. I just found it hilarious that when they first released the Ranchero, Ford USA tried to pass it off as their own idea. Meanwhile, both Ford Australia and Holden were laughing their arses off at them for such a huge omission of facts.

    Actually, as the Commodore ute is based on the sedan, its floorpan, firewall and interior are the same as their sedan and wagon brethren, The Zeta floorpan was designed from the start to be left and right hand drive with a minimum of fuss. Remember the Pontiac G8 IS the VE Holden Commodore, which is this model with LHD and a few style changes

    The coupe utility as we know it today, began from a suggestion from a farmer. He wrote to Ford Australia, explaining that he couldn't afford a new truck and a new car. His suggestion was taken up by the design team, and in 1933 a prototype was built. Think '33 Ford Coupe with the ute rear end. The model made it into production the following year, and Henry Ford himself was so impressed, he took the idea back to America with him. How long until he built an American version, I'm unsure.

    Chevrolet stole the idea for the El Camino from Holden and tried to pass it off as an original idea of theirs The credit goes to Ford Australia. The coupe utility, or what you know as a Ranchero or El Camino style ute dates back to 1933. Holden has been building their own version since 1950

    The rumour is that it will wear the El Camino badge (apologies to the purists in America) but Holden is rebadging the Commodore for America again and it will be known as the Chevrolet SS. The ute may make it to Chevy showrooms, and they'd be fools not to import it

  • @Mechknight73
    @Mechknight73 12 лет назад +1

    It's more like what many would consider the "true"outback still has rough dirt roads. I should know, my work as a truck driver brings me to some very isolated places. There have been some locations where the roads are so bad, I'm down to 20 miles an hour in places. If you want to see what Holden does in prototype testing, look up "Project V;" This tells the story of the first Commodore, the VB. Holden don't just test for durability, they want to know the exact breaking point of a component.

    @vncommy This was pretty interesting. This ramble guy obviously know nothing about aussie brands at all. And even I from Norway know that Australia has it's own three brands made by australians, and Ford is one of those.
    Aside from that, why doesn't Holden export these cars to europe and further north? I know UK have these cars under Vauxhall, but why not the rest of the world? And under it's own brand...
    It might be good for their business.
    Damn, these cars are crazy awesome, I want these!

    @Ramble1212 just clicked, you havnt read my previous comment have you? THIS PARTICULAR MODEL was designed from the ground up in Australia by Australians, we design cars here, not IEDS to blow up our own people and those trying to help you.
    The German designed commodores you are refering to are the Opel Omega, from many moons ago, the holden which shared its design with that has been updated by the VE Commodore.

    It would be much better for the australian Holden factory if these cars also could have left hand drive too, specially for the world market, sales would increase greatly to the roof.
    Under it's own brand of course, a new brand is always interesting in it's own way!
    Come on!
    I expect more of the current Holden, and i also expect it to be imported world wide in all variations.
    Summary!
    LHD = Increased sales = increased domination = bulletproof foot hold

    Quite interesting that so many of those things were Australian in origin. I think I'll be looking a lot of this stuff up some time. Seat belts, however, was something that stuck in my mind. It seems like such a negligable invention until this came to mind. No offense, but aren't there seveeral parts of populated areas in Australia where the roads aren't quite up to par or the terrain is just rougher?

  • @SageofTalos
    @SageofTalos 12 лет назад +1

    Interesting However, the Great Depression probably made it the worst time for the ute to ever see the light of day in America. Also, seeing as Henry had his hands full with a company under the strain of economic hardship in the 1930's, aid later in America's war effort throughout WWII, suffer the loss of his son and deal with health problems (strokes for example), he might not have done anything with it in his lifetime.

    Thanks for the information. They can rebadge it into whatever they want; we need better cars here in America. We have no originality over here seeing as the Big Three are just trying to emulate the same style as their import competitors. The looks of your cars might be normal for you, but it's borderline innovative compared to the bland crap we get stateside.

That was THEIR car that THEY designed and now the American branch is making a then twenty year old vehicle their own and making it look like their idea all of a sudden? how is that funny? question aside, I'd say you Aussies got revenge by making better muscle cars and keeping the utes around, making yanks like me envious.
