@@UWOODWORKER Drywall screws in the faceplate and a spindle gouge for cross grain work. Hmmm. Not so safe according to anything I've ever been taught or heard from many, many other experienced turners.

Beautiful bowl! I'm fascinated with how you use the wood shavings as your final sanding medium! I've never seen that done before.

It's a common technique called "burnishing". When done with solid timber, the woods natural oils polish itself beautifully. When I saw him doing it here, I went "Yes! Someone else who burnishes with the shavings".
That’s actually known as “burnishing”, I believe!

After watching this I glued up some baltic birch and am turning a bowl. I have never tried using the skew or parting tool for bowls but the skew works great as long as its kept sharp. I want to try the spindle roughing gouge to smooth the outside like you did but I am not an expert. As long as one takes small bites it is ok? Your bowl is beautiful!
That actually turned out to be quite nice! I assume that was Baltic Birch Plywood? I rather liked it!!

is that a bowl gouge or a roughing gouge or spindle gouge that you are using?
Cool project. One thing I noticed was when using the chop saw you crossed your arms. I would highly recommend not doing that. Not safe. But overall a great video well done.

Particle board might be interesting as well as OSB (Oriented Strand Board). I think that particle board dust would be really bad for you. Still might be lovely.
Don't bother it makes a disgusting mess....and the bowl will be soft, dents easily

V nicely done. What was that pointed tool you used to hollow out? I’d normally use a bowl gouge but I’m guessing the edge wouldn’t last two minutes against that plywood
Thanks for watching the video. I use cutters. Yes, I agree - plywood is very difficult to sharpen and you often have to sharpen cutters.
I really liked the way you turned this project. When you say premium plywood what do you mean. Would this be Baltic plywood or a grade of plywood? I want to try turning plywood but I'm afraid it would be full of holes to fill. You did a great job, it gave me incentive to try. Thank you.

Wait wait wait... so you can mount a piece to a chuck by having the chuck exert outward pressure? As opposed to in clamping inward on the tenon? Game changer!!!

I prefer the mortise on all my bowls. I've heard people say the tenon is more secure for mounting to a chuck but I've never had any problems.

I love turning plywood, although it can be pretty brutal on the tools. How often did you have to hone the chisels? Most of my plywood bowls have been done with the plys running across the face of the blank, rather than perpendicular like you did here. I like the effect it gave here.

Nice bowl! I like using plywood, though the glue a little tough on tools.
However, your use of the sliding mitre saw by crossing your arm in front of the cutting edge of the blade is not a safe practice despite the blade guard being in place. Never depend upon tool safety devices to prevent injury. They do fail from time to time. Best practice is to use the tool safely as if there was no guard in place. Work safely, friend!

Good job man but you should use the bowl gouge to do that job faster and for sure more safely

I have made several plywood turnings. I like the look. However, be careful. There are voids in plywood. I have had a few fly apart while turning. It can be dangerous!!!!

Yes, I agree that working with plywood is not easy, it is unpredictable, and it is not easy to sharpen it. You will often have to sharpen the incisors. And constantly think about safety.

I liked the plywood bowl more than I thought I would. What is the clicking from your lathe. I watch a lot of videos and I don't think I've ever heard that before.
What you mean about "clicking"?
Every time you turn your bowl by hand it clicks like it's catching on something. I've just never heard anything like that before.

Why? Why? Why do you use your cutoff saw with the wrong hand? If you were in my shop class you would never use the saw again.
Bout' time somebody saw it... I was an EMT for many years and had to deal with the results of mishandling power tools... Not pretty! Be safe.

I like your creativity and commend your effort but using a roughing gouge to flatten the face of your work can lead to disaster. I've made my share of mistakes on the lathe but this is one that really hurt you.
