@@adamcollazo8228 I don't think it's crazy. Before antibiotics, most wounds would end up infected, and serious ones gangrene. Given that pre-anesthesia most surgeries like amputation led to death. So a desire to suppress the effect by any means would have been sought. Since they didn't have ice, your options are pretty much dirt (which led to infections), herbs (which did the same), or fire. When you don't have that much options, but have thousands of people dying a year, you can try different things and figure stuff out. It's a collective consciousness.

According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason.
William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded.
The movie audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution.
First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London.
First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground.
Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets.
After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him.
Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire.
The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded.
Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

Before Wallace is tortured, the little people pantomime the final torture with a rope used in place of the victim's entrails. The implication is that Wallace's belly is cut open and his intestines removed.

    • @brianm744
      @brianm744 3 месяца назад +1

The procedure for that is called "drawing and quartering", meaning when they make the cuts in the abdomen, they make a "+" on it, making "quarters", so that the contents can be withdrawn more easily than just one horizontal cut. The "drawing" part is drawing out the organs, which was extremely painful in and of itself. All part of the torture process. When they pulled him between the ropes, the joints would completely dislocate, tearing all of the ligaments and tendons. When Wallace screams "Freeeeedooooommm!" he was literallly taking his dying breath because his diaphram was probably spasming so bad and didn't have any other muscle structures to pull against. Whether this is historically accurate. Doubtful. Definitely an excellent dramatic moment though.
At the end of it all, England distributed Wallace's remains to the four corners of Scotland as a warning. England (and their king) had no idea what kind of fire that would light in the hearts of the people of Scotland.
Most of Europe at that time had become great students of Roman torture methods.

The main battle scenes of Falkirk & Sterling were actually filmed in Ireland.
The opening scenes were filmed in the Scottish highlands at Loch Leven, there a few scenes filmed at Glen Coe after William starts to assassinate the nobles who double crossed him.
But the majority of the landscapes pictured were filmed in the English Lake District, which is where I was born & still live now.
Filming began in 1994 when I was only 7 years old (36 now), I still remember it like it was yesterday; it is one of my oldest & fondest memories. I’d never seen so many people before in my life. I’d never been in a town or village of more than 1000 people before. The village where I was born is called Chapel Stile, it’s on the Great Langdale Horseshoe mountain range.
I got to meet some of the actors like Angus McFadden & Brendan Gleeson, they were all such lovely people and they were genuinely interested in our way of life; living over 2 hours from the nearest city (Carlisle).
Every time I watch this movie, it makes me think of my ancestors. Our people weren’t Scottish or English. We were ruled by Strathclyde for a time but eventually settled as Cumbraic for a time, we had no allegiance and our own language. I know that all the towns slightly south of Hadrians Wall (The Wall which runs along the border which the Romans built to keep the Scottish out) - they all supported and fought on Scotlands side during the war of independence. I know that the towns of Newcastle, Hexham, Carlisle, Berwick, Alnwick, Galashiels, etc; actually sheltered Wallace & his armies even though they were English.
It always makes me think what side would I have been on, had I lived at that time.

The kilt is for day to day wear. In battle, they wore a full length ball gown covered in sequins! The idea was to blind your opponent with luxury!

I'm descended from Robert the Bruce by marriage, my ancestor John of Islay (also known as John MacDonald) married his granddaughter Princess Margaret. The MacDonald Clan traditionally supported Edward the Longshanks, but then switched sides when Robert the Bruce murdered another claimant to the throne and was crowned King of Scotland. Longshanks outlawed the Bruce who went on the run, eventually being sheltered by the MacDonalds. For their loyal service to the Bruce, the MacDonalds were rewarded lands formerly belonging to their regional rivals the MacDougalls. (Who were also traditionally supporters of the Longshanks). And my ancestor eventually married into the family as a reward for the clan's continued loyal service.

Considering 95% of this film is made up, they don't. Prima nocte, Sack of York, French princess, Stirling Bridge with no bridge, Gay prince, Bruce's betrayal all never happened. Mel Gibson is a drunk, racist, anti semitic homophobe who hates England. That's all.

1:03:51 I was really amused right here when Murron was smiling at Mr. Wallace while he was getting his head chopped off. 😎 She was not amused when Mr. Wallace slept with the princess. Wallace HAD to die for that, and Murron couldn't WAIT to get her hands around his throat in the after life.

Fantastic movie, but as mentioned by others it is not very historically accurate. For example, the Battle of Stirling was fought on a bridge, and the real William Wallace never even met the French princess. Probably the most accurate parts were his trial at the end and his execution (though he didn't really scream "freedom." Still a very entertaining movie though.

No, the trial is inaccurate too. It resembles the trial for a heretic or witch much later in history after the Middle Ages. He was a man accused for high treason. They did not want to make him bow to the corwn they just wanted to kill him. On the other hand they left out that he was castraded before his beheading. -Also note that the movie tries to make some references to Jesus. (We have a betrayl by an ally, there is torture, he is tied to a cross shaped struture when they take him to the trial and also the saccfolding he is tied to in the end is a cross.)
