- Trying out Altair Astro New TRI RGB filter for Astrophotography
Altair Astro have developed a new filter , the TRI RGB. Primarily for use with OSC cameras and broadband targets. But this superb filter also captures Ha, Oiii, Sii and Nitrogen emission lines so performs brilliantly with emission nebulae.
The filter is available directly from Altair Astro

Great vid mate, it really is a fantastic filter, and thanks for including some of my pics! (Andy Booth)
Hi Andy and thank you again for making your great images available for me to use.
Altair are producing some brilliant filters. Keep up the great work, clear skies
Nice to see you back Glenn, you are right the weather lately has been a real problem, lets hope for better albeit in lighter skies!
Thank you David. Been so busy of late its been hard to find time to complete videos. I hope like you we soon get a decent break in the weather, never known it so wet. 🤞
Excellent video and stunning images, what a filter.
Hi Steve, thanks for commenting and the support. Andy has really showed off what that filter can do, its very good.
Hi Glenn nice review excellent images from Andy
Hi Tony and thank you. Andy has taken some great images with the TRI RGB filter.
Thanks for doing this video Glenn!👍I hope all is well with you, your family & your friends!🙏I have been eyeing this filter for getting accurate star colours with an OSC, and it certainly looks like it can do that!👍Have fun at the show, but don't give into temptation...we don't want our beloved "Astrobloke" to become known as "astrobroke"! 😉😁
Astrobroke 🤣🤣 something we all suffer with.
Its a very good filter and can confirm gives very nice RGB stars with OSC cameras. Altair are bringing out some very good filters. I always go to the shows with the intension to behave but always fail and am tempted by something shiny.
Great video mate, that definitely looks like a good filter, especially for OSC! Very nice images from Andy! Looking forward to the show👍 Clear skies!
Thanks Simon.Yes it really is a great filter for OSC. performs really well. Can't wait for the weekend, going to be fun
Great video Glenn. Love the images captured by that filter. Thank you as I was thinking of the Antlia Triband rgb. Altairs one is cheaper and with your 👍 thats the one I am buying, clear skies
Thank you Mark. Its a brilliant filter. I would definitely choose this one, are you going to PAS?
Yes I hope to see you there
Hi Glenn,
Wow, that Altair Triband filter really looks interesting. I noticed it filters out just about all of the yellow and green spectrum, which is a very good thing. I like that it passes the upper portion of the blues, perhaps the hydrogen beta light. Certainly a filter to look into.
I hope your skies clear out ... after this full moon phase departs.
Hi Pat, thank you for watching and commenting. The filter is very impressive under use. Altair are producing some really good filters and that's great for us and others that use OSC cameras. It seems like there has been a lot of advancements in the hobby with both software (tools) and equipment. Hope you are having better skies than us.
Wow! Something to consider getting on Saturday!! Looking forward to seeing you, I've got loads to ask you and other colleagues!!
Really looking forward to seeing you Jeremy, will be so nice to catch up.
Nice one Glenn , will see you at PAS I will be on the AA stand helping out
Thank you David, looking forward to PAS, will see you then
Great Video Glen, Like you I have had problems taking advantage of the limited weather opportunities, will look out for you on saturday
Hi Malcolm and thank you. It sure has been a rough period but hopefully it will change soon. Be sure to say hi. Enjoy the show
Looks very interesting and a pretty good price for a 2" astro filter too.
I think so too! Altair are bringing out some great filters now they can do the coatings themselves and are pricing them very competitively. Looking forward to the LRGB set they are working on currently. Thanks for watching
See you at the show 😁
Look forward to it. Hope you have a good day
Nice I like Andy's shots
He took some great images with that filter. Thanks for watching
Great review Glenn. I’ve posted it on the BackyardAstro forum
Thank you Terry.
Nice and honest presentation Glenn 👍 Will be interesting if you have the opportunity to make a few shorter videos and/or perhaps interviews from the Astro show this weekend 👍
Thank you. Funny you should mention interviews as that is the plan. Get to meet the different vendors and here of future plans and developments. So much is happening in Astronomy with gear advances.
@@Astrobloke that’s nice I look forward indeed 😊
I’ve got this on my shopping list for PAS Saturday to use with my OSC.
Get to the front of the queue Jim I think there are a few looking to grab this on Saturday. Be good to see you mate
@@Astrobloke yes mate. Be good to see you
My dad says your a great Astro photographer
Well that is very kind thank you. Thanks for watching and commenting, I use to play with the intros with my home videos like our holidays. Your channel reminded me of that.
@@Astrobloke you know who's boy that is don't you lol
Interesting filter that mate with cracking results to, I just want to know where Andy got his clear skies from as it's been garbage here for what seems months now, which also gives my astro mojo a good kicking. I hope Altair can produce a narrower filter to work at F2 as that would be one I'd be very interested in although I could be tempted with the RGB filter at PAS.
Hope to see you there on Saturday mate for a catch up clear skies (soon I hope!!)
I pray to the gods alot! Seriously, thats the beauty of this filter, I normally do duo + uvir image, now i get almost narrow band contrast and detail (extracted synthetic LUM) , AND RGB for natural stars and colour BOTH in one imaging session. That’s efficient imaging with our weather opportunities!
Yeah we have to take what we can that's for sure.
I asked Nick and Ian but apparently the clear skies are not a guarantee with filter purchase, Daddy Mick would say its because its not red Lol. Great filter though, I think Andy must have been lucky but as he says the filter has helped lots
So true
Its great that it has helped so much. We just need altair to make one that filters out clouds now 🤞😂😂
Fab video thanks dude. I have the V1 Quad and tri band filters which are fab but do have the halo issues. Also have the Lpro max too as live in a Bortle 5.
So am I correct in thinking that once data is captured through the new broadband Tri RGB filter I just isolate each RGB channel and then process as if data from a mono RGB channel? OR does the filter just improve the RGB data as is all channels processed together? Would this be a better option than the current LPro max for my broadband imaging?? thanks
I process from this filter in a number of ways, for nebula work I make a synthetic LUM from all three channels and process for detail, then merge with the three normal r,g,b channels for the colour. BUT for galaxies i just use the r,g,b channels as is, so really you can do both, all together like LPro, or separate like rgb mono, or with a combined synthetic LUM and normal RGB for LRGB.(AndyBooth)
Andy’s reply covers it well and seeing his results I think thats the way to go. I think on broadband this is far superior to the L Pro and once you use it will see this as the filter of choice. Clear skies
@@WindowToTheCosmosThank you Andy for that reply and help. I would love to see any workflow tutorials if you have any so that I can see what you mean?
@@AstroblokeThanks, I may have to try to get this filter on Saturday at PAS. Hope to see you there.
@@julianmatthews3262 what software do you use for processing? I will then try and give you some instructions if I can.
Sounds a good filter, is it similar to the L-Pro ??🤨
Antlia tri band
As Dominic below comments it is like the Antlia TRI Band. I have the L-pro and this filter is much better. The L pro is quite old now and these new coatings are much better.
Yes
Great video, but is this filter just not another Light pollution filter like the hundred or so that are already on the market, just bundled under a new name for marketing reasons, it’s no different from the much cheaper Optolong L-Pro filter….is it..???
Hi. No this is not like that at all. I have the L PRO and also a UV/IR cut that I use but the details and colour that this produces is far superior. As soon as the weather allows me to I will be posting some filter comparisons to show the differences. Altair have worked hard on the coatings to produce this to help complement their Triband and dualband filters. What impressed me was the star colours this filter let through, its a huge step up from the L Pro.
Hi Glen, Hope alls well, all our broadband/mobile providers , hubs, routers, mobile phone software etc etc have been upgraded to super hyper fast with new, ips etc, about time really annoyed me when you couldn't send an answer to the email, I'll send a message to you on Gmail, xsed fingers it will work, tried Cuivs solution but failed so mini router hotspot apart from a phone hotspot looks like the only way, Atb regards Tom..
Lets hope that helps with things, I have replied to your email so fingers crossed it works this time.
