Yes the Surf (4 Runner) had a lockable (Torsen) center diff 50/50 front to rear for real off road use, L4 I believe . H4 is not locked and split torque 40/60 front to rear and can be used on pavement as can H2 is for 2WD.
Super nice unit. 4WD button just engages the front axle - for hard surfaces and road use. Lever back locks center differential. Lever across and forward is center diff lock and low ratio.

These are great, drove these for a while traveling in Africa, and they stand up to a good beating. the only downside was always the cost, but you have filled me with hope, saying the prices are going down now.

Car is beautiful, in Brazil it is pretty expensive, but awesome to have, this engine is a lot more smooth than the 2.8D.
Well we don't have such in South Africa but Mozambique has one which is much better but a bit expensive to maintain

What are these things like of gas milage? Is this or a 4 cylinder petrol better for milage ?
They're about the same. I had a 99 SR5 T4R and with meticulous maintenance you can easily get 20+ mpg with city driving. Best I ever saw driving from Virginia DMV area to Tampa Florida 10+ times over was 28mpg.
The 1KD-FT 3.0 turbo Diesel will average ~21mpg as well.

Much rarer I believe. If you like manuals, you might have better luck going for a Land Cruiser.
They are in Europe where i live the 1999's majority of them are manual (UN imported them during Balkan war)
BTW the engine sound is to high even for a diesel the rev limiter was above 1k wich means there is a 'glowplug' wich is turned on, To turn the car easier in winter.
They are, versions sold in Europe and South America came with the 1KZ turbo diesel and manual transmisions mostly

Right, that happened just recently. It really shook up the market here because Myanmar was the biggest importer from Japan.
yes, car policy change every month. now the government strick on 660 cc pickup truck. each company can import only ome truck in a month. you can see those small pick ups in every street of Yangon. however there is a black market in Thailand border where nearly 200 cars get into Myanmar everyday.

Sadly the aftermarket HID-set isn't legal without the headlight washer kit,and the automatic headlight leveling.(In most countries.Or you not removing it, and the oncoming driver gets a free eye surgery with your disgustingly bright headlights. )
I've resorted to clip on visors that are tinted plexiglass because of these damn bright lights. They work pretty good at dimming the 1million candlepower, unfocused made in china crap lights.
Landcruisers are so fucking badass. They need to make a mad max edition inspired by the movie. Everything about the Land cruiser screams mad max.
