  • This is a 97 Toyota Hilux Surf equipped with the SSRG package. Take a look as we take it on a quick off-roading trip, and show you the difference between this JDM model vs a US one.

    I have the SSR, 1996 3.0L 1KZ-TE manual transmission w/o the intercooler... Why does yours have two batteries; Is yours set up as 24V? The SSR-G is the way to go with the intercooler and hood scoop. What avg mileage do you achieve?

    Nice import. I don't think the US spec 4Runner have the suspension damping settings (Norm and Hard). What mpg (US) are you getting on the 3 liter turbo diesel?

    • @Aldan001
      @Aldan001 Год назад +2

      I owe one of this cars in Kazakhstan. MPG is 15l per 100km town which is 16mpg. And 10L/100km highway (22mpg).

      The diesel and 3.4l get about the same mpg but the diesel has waaaaay more power

    • @runnerxa
      @runnerxa 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@ryancollins3227 Not sure if the 96-99 Hilux Surf's 1KZ-TE has way more power than the 5VZ-FE. Since it is a JDM import, it likely has the intercooled 1KZ-TE, then it has more torque at 253ft-lb at lower rpm which is only 36 ft-lb more than the 5VZ-FE on the 4Runner. The standard non-intercooled 1KZ-TE's torque is actually lower at 212ft-lb vs 217ft-lb on the 5VZ-FE. When I was stationed in Japan, I noticed that the 2000+ Hilux Surf (3rd gen 4Runner) have the newer 1KD-FTV diesel which does put out 260ish ft-lb torque and 30+ more hp than the 1KZ-TE. My comment was that the diesel definitely get better fuel economy and torque at lower rpm than the gasoline. Personally I own a supercharged 99 4Runner because we don't get the turbo diesel variant here.

    Diesel is 5.50 (not 5.49). When buying JDM, stick to models that are available in the US. Imagine if you have to replace the front windshield! these 4runners, 80 series LAndcruisers are OK, but Hiace, liteace bit worries me. If you want, convert that Diesel hilux surf into LHD by using a dash, HVAC unit, paddle set, driver's door skin from a US 4runner

      I have replaced tons of stuff on mine using 3rd gen 4Runner parts and everything works beautifully. Primarily only difference is right hand drive and diesel engine. Suspension, drivetrain, interior parts, exterior parts, are all the same... By the way, I did the windshield too.

    • @ventureswithlux
      @ventureswithlux Год назад

      @@atrixstic I only replaced the windshield because a rock hit it and cracked it. I did all of the LED lights on the interior. Not too bad. Ordered them off of Amazon using 4runner part numbers. Other than that I haven't done any interior mods

    I dont get all the hype around RHD diesel Surf in US. 1KZte is not even top engine in Japan for this cars. So by default US spec 6 cyl 4runner has better engine, has steering wheel on the right side, way more convenient then RHD car. And good luck servicing diesel fuel system.
    1KZ is not fuel efficient diesel neither. Why get if it get the same milage as V6 Runner, has steering wheel on the wrong side, , it is slower, Diesel is more expensive then gas, it cost more, in case anything goes bad with the engine you will get stuck looking for parts.
    Google SPV valve issue 1KZ, the car just shuts off with no warning. They are nutritious for that as well as head cracking.

      The spill off valve issue is ecu related, the capacitors leak with old age.

      Ive had this exact model/color/everything for the past 5 years. it runs like a dream, no problems. Diesel will outlive a gas engine with proper maintenance, and all of the parts I've bought for routine maintenance or replacing for my piece of mind came in less than a month straight from japan.
