    Awesome, well detailed video. As mentioned people should remember the order they removed the disks in each slot and put them back in the right slot to avoid issues. Labelling them might be a good idea.

      mdadm uses the raid id of each disk not the slot,, really old versions of qnap and Synology os (over 6 years old) it did matter what order they was in but "" Only "" when moving the disks to another nas for migration , if then was was functioning normally you can shut down the nas and move the disks around and power it backup (but that requirement is long gone and absolutely redundant)

    Is the power supply propriety? Found this QNAP storage system in a dumpster, along with other tossed out electronics. Has what looks like 2 Seagate 2TB HDDs, as the other 2 are open. Can you reformat the HDDs while connected to the host PC? Are the HDDs designed spefically for a NAS system? Thank you 🤓

    Sep 2024 - I just tried to install 16GB on TS-451 running QTS 5.2.0.2860 build 20240817 and could only see 8GB on the System Status. Trying to figure out whether it is a case of faulty RAM or whether QNAP clamped down on this functionality.

    The disclaimer at the beginning of the video has come true. With one of the recent updates they've started enforcing it. If you go into the Control Panel, at the top it will list the amount of memory you have. It'll read Memory: 16 GB (8 GB usable) Checking the System Monitor will show that the system is only using 8. This caught me a few months ago when I was doing the upgrade and couldn't figure out why it would only read 8 GB.

      Thanks for the heads-up. Could you tell me what version of QTS you're using? I have the latest version 4.4.2.1320 (2020/05/29) on my TS-451 and I am still seeing 16 GB available in System Status, and in the Resource Monitor it says I'm using 9.89 GB out of 15.53 GB.
      I'm not doubting you - I'm just wondering if I should prevent any more updates from QNAP... or am I looking in the wrong place for the memory info?

    I saw another video about this but nobody seems to care whether the memory actually gets used. In order to test it, create a couple VMs that together use more than 8GB of RAM.
    If they both run and the OS inside each VM reports that it has access to the RAM you set it up to use, then this works. If not, it's a false trail and a waste of money.
    I'm not buying the RAM to do the upgrade until I can find proof the RAM is actually being used and that's the best way I can think to test it. It would force an error if the RAM could not be used.
    It's not enough to just show me the screen that says 16GB. You have to do testing to see if the 16GB (or any RAM above 8GB) is being used. Please create two VMs using over 4GB RAM each and run them simultaneously, NOTE what each VMs OS is using and report your results here.

    What do I have to know when buying RAM for my TS-451+ for it to work?

      You may want to look at the QNAP forums. I know that the TS-451+ can take 16GB of RAM (and there are a few memory models that have been anecdotally successful) but I'm not sure about your particular model.

  • @josesimasyt

    Hello, Thank you for the video, 16Gb is very interesting for VMs. I have a question though: which CPU is in your QNAP TS-451? I am asking this because there are (at least) three different TS-451: TS451+ (unspecified 4 core cpu), TS451A (no idea which CPU) and TS451A-2G (Celeron 3060). I am planning to buy the latter (TS451A-2G) and I would like to upgrade to 16Gb but even Intel's Ark site claims 8Gb max.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      The CPU in my TS-451 (the base model) is an Intel Celeron J1800. The two TS-451A models you list use the Intel Celeron N3060. If you search for the TS-451A's smaller brother on the QNAP NAS Community forums(look for "Memory Upgrade on TS 251A"), you'll see that there is anecdotal evidence that it does take 16 GB.

      The processor on these NAS units are normally quite weak, so 4GB is probably just fine if you’re running a couple of things extra.

    great video. will try this soon. I should add that I'm not going to be running any virtual machine stuff. Just may have more than 1 user accessing files like movies at the same time. Would I benefit much from that? Perhaps just going from 2G to 4G (i have the 451 plus)?

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  5 лет назад +1

      For just file access I think you won't see much benefit with additional memory. If you want to run apps (not necessarily Virtualization Station), adding memory might help depending on the memory requirements of those apps.

      You're right - not only does QNAP not support 16GB, but Intel says this as well!
      I just assigned a VM 14 GB (leaving 2 GB for the host) and QNAP's resource manager shows that out of a total of 15.54 GB usable memory, I'm using 14.89 GB. Within the VM, I show 14 GB installed.
      One thing I haven't done is run 14 GB worth of applications in the VM. Is there some utility that just loops through every bit of available memory and read/writes to them?

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      Please note - there are only a few brands/models of memory reported to have worked for others. The Crucial memory that I use in the video is one of them.

      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      I haven't been able to find an article or video on the TS-251 specifically, but Amazon has four reviews where they claim they were able to upgrade it to 16 GB. For a recommendation, i think it will depend on your use case. If using it just as storage, I think 8 GB will be more than enough. However, if you use virtual machines and containers like I do, 16 GB definitely helps with performance, at least on my TS-451. There's a world of difference between assigning 2 GB and 8 GB to a VM, for example.

    Hi mate, great video... couple of questions about the 451a.
    1) I've seen on some forums people having issues with drives 3 and 4 not working after installing 16gb... these were from about 18mths ago and wondered if you'd seen/experienced any such issue?!?!!?
    2) Is it possible to do a CPU upgrade on the 451a?!

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  5 лет назад

      Thanks! I personally haven't had any problems since I created the video (and I've updated the QTS versions as each has been released). Did others have problems with specific QTS releases, or with specific brand/model memory? The Crucial model that I use works, and I've read in the QNAP community forums that there is also a Kingston model that has had success.
      Unfortunately, I don't know if the CPU can be upgraded as I wasn't able to find any info in the forums. It looks like the TS-451A uses an Intel Celeron N3060 which has a 14nm Airmont architecture. The only photo I could find had a heat sink on it, so I'm not sure how it's mounted.

      That's all good to know, as I'm keen to upgrade to the 16gb!! I'm running 4x 8tb seagate drives (about 63% used) and that's a lot of buggering about if something stuffs up!! Here's the link:
      forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=126032
      As for the issues people were having, this was back in 2016... no release issues were identified that I saw, so I guess things may have been rectified since then and no one has updated their results??? From what I could find since watching your video about the CPU is that it is hard mounted (soldered?) to the motherboard and not upgradeable; well, definitely not for dummies like me!! LOL

      There seems to be mixed success on the TS-451A with lots of variables, including the RAID configuration. It looks like a few people had success with ADATA memory. Whatever you decide, please make a backup of your data before adding the memory. (btw, on my TS-451, I use RAID 1 on two drives, and RAID 1 on the other two...). Good luck!

      @@accessrandom Thanks for this video. Just a couple of points my TS-451A had a couple of extra retaining screws holding the case to the back plate that carries the fan. Also the memory was 2 sticks nested in the main holder not separate as shown in the video and thus not difficult to get to the 2nd one.
      I appear to have successfully upgrade to 16Gb of memory on my TS-451A using the Crucial Kit as listed above. The system hardware is showing 16Gb installed and 16Gb available and the memory useage is showing very low now

      May be an install issue (stick didn't quite click in?), or a bad stick of ram. This is fairly common in PC building, especially the former which is why it is advised to do a do a quick boot and system check before installing everything in your case . IE boot into bios and check and see if everything is showing up and running such as the ram, GPU, etc. RAM slots in particular can be a little finicky.

      Looks like there are some differences between the TS-x51 and TS-x51A series, primarily the CPU. However, there are reports that the TS-x51A can be upgraded to 16 GB based on a quick internet search (look for "Memory Upgrade on TS 251A" on QNAP's NAS Community Forum). I don't have first-hand experience with the TS-251A, but I'd make sure to use memory that has been proven to work by multiple sources.

    I haven't seen any evidence from a user that the OS is using 16GB "hardware". It is almost certain that the OS swaps on disk beyond 8 GB. It is necessary to carry out tests in real situation. Memory modules are currently very expensive and it is difficult to trust this type of video without real testing. Regards.

First, drives 3/4 did not show up, and I called QNAP support and we managed to get those to show somehow (I think it was just a hard reset). But then after setup, I could no longer connect or even see the NAS at all on the network. Exhausted all troubleshooting steps and just when he was about to issue an RMA, he saw that I upgraded ram to an unsupported amount, so he wanted me to downgrade to 1GB and try again. Well, after doing that, same issue as before, drives 3/4 not registering in Qfinder, however the LEDs for bays 3/4 do light up green on the box itself...
