    I saw another video about this but nobody seems to care whether the memory actually gets used. In order to test it, create a couple VMs that together use more than 8GB of RAM.
    If they both run and the OS inside each VM reports that it has access to the RAM you set it up to use, then this works. If not, it's a false trail and a waste of money.
    I'm not buying the RAM to do the upgrade until I can find proof the RAM is actually being used and that's the best way I can think to test it. It would force an error if the RAM could not be used.
    It's not enough to just show me the screen that says 16GB. You have to do testing to see if the 16GB (or any RAM above 8GB) is being used. Please create two VMs using over 4GB RAM each and run them simultaneously, NOTE what each VMs OS is using and report your results here.

    Hey just a quick update, after more searching around, I believe what is happening is people are being confused by the ARK page. The J1900 does in fact have a 8GB memory limit, but that is PER MEMORY CHANNEL, that is why 16GB works, because it's a dual memory channel cpu and since you are only putting 8GB per channel, you get 16GB. So yes, by the ARK page, your max memory limit would be 16GB total (8GB per channel) so most likely any 2X8GB DDR3L 1333 Memory kit would work.

    • @artc7972
      @artc7972 3 года назад +1

      This set of chips is 2X8GB 1600 DDR3L SODIMM RAM, not 1333, so am guessing that any of the the faster 1600 would work as well. Not sure if CL11 (CAS latency) is essential to match up with or not though. I gather this is also Unbuffered and NON-ECC so would look for that in the specs as well.

  • @MasterXBKC
    @MasterXBKC 6 лет назад +2

    It should be noted that while Intel Ark lists 8GB max on many lower end/embedded chips, this limitation is usually implemented in software on the chip, and many vendors get versions of Intels chips with various limitations altered/disabled, to meet various design goals and needs. It is entirely possible these chips are of a sub-model batch, that the 8GB limit was disabled on, which would explain why they are able to detect 16 GB properly. All intel 64 bit chips support at least 16GB design and channel wise, but many are limited intentionally at the chips software level, to force you to use/buy higher end chips to get more ram capacity, it is how Intel makes more profit margin. Notable examples of devices where these limits are voided, are many of the embedded firewall boards that use chips that supposedly dont support more than 2GB, but often are found to work fine with 8GB or more. This is also why many/most of the super cheap intel atom quad core laptops, such as those with X5s, and others, have the RAM soldered on, making it impossible to remove/swap, because the chips technically support more ram, but intel and the vendors use that to force you to get a higher end model to get more ram capacity support.

    I bought a QNAP TS-451+NAS a few days ago, upgraded one slot to a cache SSD, that and aggregate made quite a positive impact, so, I decided
    to buy 16 GB Crucial, not the 16GB kit, just 2X8GB CT102464BF160B RAM modules
    Installed both dimes, and then....Nothing, 4 slots populated, 1,2,3 with $GB drives, slot 4 with a 480GB SSD as a cache disk.
    Nothing is actually, the network Led light up and the first and second LED, nothing happens after that.
    I tried 1 Dimm in the original slot, does not work either.
    So, it seems to me QNAP did something about it or I got the unlucky "ticket"
    I read several forums, some where lucky, some not, but this, most time, was a while ago, like years ago.
    Is there anything else I can do?

    did this upgrade and qnap just entered reboot loop. replaced memory modules and problem only happened for one module. But system would not boot properly for 8 gig installed. Stumped as many people have upgraded and had no problem.

    Dear Hip-IO, so if I was to decide to choose between TS-451+ 2GB and TS-451+ 8GB, I should take the 2GB version and update memory to 16GB? Do you consider this upgrade safe and robust even after one year? Thanks!

    • @HipIOReviews

      +Juraj Maciak I would do the 2G and upgrade it. It's found it easy, but it depends on your comfort level opening it up and installing it. I find when you second guess your self that's when mistakes happen, so just be confident. Mine is still running efficiently.

    What specs does the RAM need, so that I know it would work with my QNAP TS-451+?
    Formfactor: SO ? (with 204Pins?)
    Voltage: 1.35V, 1.5V ? (Does it depend?)
    Type: DDR3L, DDR3 ? (Does it depend?)
    Clockspeed: ? (Are all Clockspeeds compatible?)
    (I would just need 8GB = 2*4GB and wanted to look for used to get them cheap.)

I am currently setting up a 77 foot Catamaran and like how these units are 12vDC so I do not require an inverter as all my other network gear is 9vDC or 12vDC (a great feature for POE and my AP's"). Mine (2GB) was taking about 6.5 minutes to boot. Replaced the 2GB with 2x 4GB (8GB total) and boot time dropped to 5 minutes. Wasn't expecting that, but happy about it anyway. The thing can be left running, so boot time isn't usually a big deal.

    Same as previous videos, there is no point upgrading your 451+ to 16GB RAM if you have not upgraded your CPU in the first place. The native CPU on your QNAP 451+ is an Intel Celeron Quad Core J1900 and Intel clearly specifies that the maximum RAM supported by this particular CPU is... 8GB.
    The QNAP OS which I think is Linux based will detect your 16GB very clearly and will even fully exploit it but only prior to a CPU upgrade.
    There are two elements to consider before upgrading RAM on any electronic device:
    1- can the OS take it?
    2- can the CPU take it?
    The answer for the QNAP 451+ is:
    1- Yes
    2- No

    Well... QNAP TS-451+ is using Intel Celeron Processor J1900 which can only deal with 8gb of ram. Since I doubt intel would lie like that - I will place a bet that half of your ram is never used.

    • @bBrain
      @bBrain 6 лет назад +4

      actually, it works fine, i do think the Intel Ark page is in error/typo i mean who's really caring about specs on an OEM j1900 cpu. ROFL. But it does in fact give you 16GB ram, i did this as soon as I got my 451+. I run several virtual machines on it, using 4 - 8GB each, and leaving 2gb for NAS stuff. Yea it works just fine.

      @stevesybesma 5 лет назад +2

      @@bBrain Can you send a screenshot of two VMs running simultaneously and the amount of RAM each OS reports being used that adds up to over 8GB? That would seal the deal for me. Merely setting up the VMs to use the RAM that QTS already acknowledges is there is one thing. If the OS in each VM reports it's using the amount of RAM you setup and it is over 8GB total, I'm upgrading mine. I think that's an adequate test.
