DIY Compost Sifter

- Here is a compost sifter that I made today. I viewed another RUclips video by Gunz McGraw for the design, however; I modified it a little bit. I used mesh on both the sifter and the bottom section. You'll also notice that I used two pieces of wood on the bottom in order to hold the the base securely to the wheelbarrow.The measurements of the bottom are 22" x 44" and the measurements of the top slider are 18" x 24". I used 1/2" wire mesh for both the both and the bottom. I used pressure treated wood. The sides are 2x4, the ends are 1x4 and the glide raills are 2x2. I used 2 1/2 galvanized screws to attach the the 2x4 and fencing staples to attach the 1/2 inch mesh to both the top and bottom. I purchased the caster (non-swivel) from Home Depot.
Two years ago, after watching this video, I built one of these sized to fit my Gorilla Cart. Made two of the rolling trays - one with 1/2” hardware cloth, one with 1/4”. Works amazingly well. Glad I came across this video again so I can say thank you VERY much for the video. 👍

Thank you for this video! I made one that sits on my Ohio Dump Cart... works perfectly. I will be covering it with boiled linseed oil so that it lasts longer.

Spent a couple hours today and made the sifter based on your design for sifting rocks from ground soil. Brilliant design and I like how it rests and locks over the wheel barrow. Thanks!
I am thinking you don't have to say a word,your project said it for you!! That is an Awesome!! sifter,you just add a heap of compost,worm castings or dirt and the wheels on the track allows for it to slide back and forth..this was a great idea and video.thank you!

@TLgardens. Yes, I agree that higher sides on the sifter would definitely help keep the soil from going over the edges.

Really genius in it's simplicty. I'm thinking that maybe the top sifter could be a little deeper to better control the contents while sifting. Thanks for sharing.

This is a basic wood frame on dolly wheels. Excellent choice, great design, and a great idea. I'm assuming you are using different size screens keeping the biggest at the top. I've been looking for ways of fiterting my compost and this is a wonderful, practical, and inexpensive way. You have my support. ^..^
Glides. Yeah. Now that I've watched 5 videos of sifters. I can make the ultimate one combining hte best of each ;)
