I used a 3/8" 0-2800 RPM for a similar project, and it flung stuff everywhere except into the Wheel Barrow. Thanks for posting. I'm thinking of building a manual crank for mine.
Just what I've been looking for. Didn't want to go through the trouble of finding and hooking up a motor with pulleys and belts, but I was tired of sifting by hand. This is a great middle ground. Thanks for sharing. Now I'm off to the flea market in search of bicycle tires and casters.
Now that is the perfect sifter for a DYI-er. Cheap and easy, I think I will go 3/4" plywood on my driver side (Just for longevity) I just have to make sure it is reasonably centered. Brother, you just saved me ALOT of time and money.
Thank you for making this video. I've been trying to figure out how to sift my topsoil. Not only did you have a solution, you made this instructional video. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Great DIY idea! Simple yet effective, and better than most of what other else is out there that requires either having things like a cement mixer or purchasing things.
Just got my piles set up, figured I’d look at some softer ideas. This is the simplest yet most effective one I’ve seen. The only improvement I can see is to add a motor that can rotate it while I shovel more in, and then have a way for the big stuff to escape. But what ever I build it will probably start out as this. Thanks!
Simplest form for a compost trommel I've seen as I've been looking. I like the masonite end and the method of just keeping the "rejects" in the barrel to empty. Not sure it'll work, as our barrel is 4ft long. Will try each. Thanks for showing us simply and not wasting our time.
l used three rims so I could use the center one for a drive belt. Hooked the drive belt up to an old variable speed drill motor, and went to work on my pile of 10 yards of dirt. Took a lot of hits and misses before I got everything working right but it was worth it. Good Luck
That’s pretty nifty. I have four old front loader dryer wheels from the dryer tub that would work perfectly for this and they would be super quiet because they’re neoprene or similar. Was thinking you Could have a top frame as well with two wheels up top that way the barrel will be locked in by all four wheels. You could add a crank to the round board side of the barrel and build a simple floor plate on hinges that you could simply tilt and dump the entire thing into a bin . I like to use those black cement mixing tubs you get from the big box hardware store for this kind of stuff. Those bicycle wheels are such a cool idea.
Thanks very helpful video for what I’m planning to make hadn’t thought of rivets. I’m wondering if I put a bolt in the center of the closed end if a drill or impact drill would work well to turn it.
I converted a tumble dryer. Shovel it in, and when it is all sifted just hold your shovel in the middle of the drum and it tumbles the debris onto your shovel for removal.
This is a great screener, nice job. I made something somewhat similar using bike rims. But I bought some heavy duty 42 in. x 7 ft. Mesh Mat from Home Depot that's used to set in concrete to reinforce it. The squares are like 4" so just lined it inside with the 1/2" screen. The concrete mat I rolled into the size to fit the inside of the spoke-less bike rims and zip tied it, it's wicked sturdy thicker steel and will never give way. I had to zip tie over the rims though and not in the spoke holes so for roller wheels it might not be so good, but it rolls over my wheel barrow real easy and can be spun by hand too. It sure makes quick work of screening and will never break due to the thick steel of the concrete mat, only 14 buck$ too.
Excellent. Would be awesome to slap a belt on it with a little crank wheel maybe a bit easier to turn tbat way. I made a bag shape by folding a piece of 1 inch chicken wire and zip tying the edges and using a stick for a handle at the top. I fill it with compost and shake it for 20 seconds or so and it seperates all the small bits from thr twigs and large leaves! Great for smaller quantities. The sifter i made is about 5 gallons and i put about 3 gallons of compist into it at a time
im new on this, do u know why my wheels get stuck to deep inside the rim and stop turning? , I tested them before assembling the sifter and they fit ok, dunno the issue
As long as it fits inside the rim of the wheel it should track ok. I used what i could find which ended up 2 1/2" w and 1 1/2" d casters and 4 garage door guild wheels (3/8"×1 3/4")
Hey there, you have your angle too big, try it more flat, while turning you use only about half of lenght of the screen. Thanks for the video, simple and working design :D
Good work.. maybe hook the whole thing up to a bicycle chain drive and then look for a volunteer to ride the stationery bike for their daily exercise workout LOLOLOL

If you was to put a bolt in it , I would go with plywood instead of hardboard for the end piece

@@buzzard-roosthomesteadandp3097 I took a video but I haven't uploaded it yet. When I do I will let you know.

I just got a relief from my back watching this video.

How do you get the wheels not to swivel in other directions?
The edges on the bicycle rims keeps the casters straight

Thanks
@ 1:19 I really thought it was a mannequin standing there, but it was just his daughter.
Lol she did
@@buzzard-roosthomesteadandp3097 great video BTW. Very creative way to sift dirt.
Great idea !! Would make a good pest moss spreader
???? Am I missing something
@@buzzard-roosthomesteadandp3097 like a landiz compost spreader
@@solowjumper I had to look that on up lol. It wouldn't be hard to convert it into one
@@buzzard-roosthomesteadandp3097 That's exactly what I thought !
Maybe you could use the pedal and chain to help turn it somehow. If you have the bike frame you could use it for part of the stand.
I like it easy and inexpensive. I would screw a turning handle on the wooden sealed side to turn the wheel easier.
The bicycle wheels are a great idea.
@@ronpalmer7260 thanks I have a update.
I believe the video is call the forever tomato cage.
That is slick!
New sub. Visiting Wes & Ade last week, they spoke highly of you. Good sifter!
Thank you
I like it!
Gonna make a mulch spreader and I'll absolutely be using some of my junk bike wheels based on this.

21" outside measurement. I made another video that I added a finer mesh.
Genius!
Thank you for this
Wow ! its not just for peat moss but for soil too !
I use it for wood chips also

I changed the title to My homemade compost sifter improvements and my almost forever tomato cages

Genius.
Is sifting really needed?
No but the bigger pieces take longer to break down. I add the bigger pieces to wood chips cause the wood chips tie up the carbon while they beak down.
