liminal is much more than an ambient sigur rós mixtape curated by jónsi, alex somers and paul corley. liminal views sigur rós as an eco-system. it identifies the connections and blurs the boundaries between work done and work to come; between brand new music and ideas barely yet nascent; between songs written 20 years ago and collaborations to be made tomorrow.
in bringing together these collaborations and commissions - for choreographers, visual artists and new technologies - with solo work and remixes, film score and generative music, as well as the work of close friends and associates in the wider sigur rós ‘family’, liminal aims to take the listener to a hinterland, to the threshold of a place neither nor there; a “liminal” space. liminal will live on digital services as an ‘endless’ playlist, which means it will be built over linear time into a never-finished project of ceaseless invention.

52:00 - 55:00 was playing as I flew into Auckland from Canada. It was a 14 hour flight from my layover in Houston. I was flying here to see my girlfriend who lives in the South Island of New Zealand and it has been 164 days since we last saw each other.
This song played as the plane broke the clouds and I saw the shore for the first time. For the first time I could see her country (we first met in Canada and she moved back home) for the first time I felt home somewhere I had never been. I felt profound happiness. Nothing mattered the moment I could see the ground. I’m still here and listening to this song absolutely rips me apart because it will always be what was in my ears moments before seeing her after so long.

14:05-20:00 Always brings tears to my eyes. It feels like the summers in my childhood home, in a remote location in the eastern countryside of Finland. In my teenage years and early twenties, I used to wander around for hours, in the forests and the empty roads, the fields and the lakeshores and listen to this music while there was still daylight at 10 pm in June. I felt so incredibly happy, just being by myself. The smell of lush green fields full of wild flowers, the calming twilight of the forest, the soft moss that I laid on, the old wooden dock I sat on at the shore of the lake and dipped my toes into the water... I still do that, whenever I visit there. It is the most important place on earth for me. This music also reminds me of four of my dearest friends, whom I have known since I before I can remember. They were not humans, yet I have never had such a bond with anyone in this life, and probably never will again. They all passed away in 2019-2020 due to old age and sickness. I miss them dearly, they were and still are a part of me.
This is how life, in its purest form, sounds like.
I was declaring myself free on a universe out of my control. It felt like the word 'pure'. May energy and atoms continue they course without my awareness; this universe is free of me, and I am free of him.
I release my fears, I accept our liberty.
If interstellar space had music I imagine this is what it would sound like. Love this band the music has gotten me through a lot in my life .
Please, listen to the Mogwai album called "young team". In the first song, at the very beginning, the is a girl saying something quite similar to your statement :-)

If on another planet far far away, an alien teen listening to their new sound pod in their dimly lit room, happened to just tune across a faint, distant signal and this is the sound they heard, softly breaking through the static of time and space.....they would listen in awe and wonder! Jpol.

Oooooh! Didn't know this existed. 2 minutes in, and I'm getting serious Von vibes.....
Von is far and away my favorite album to listen to while falling asleep. I can't even begin to count how many times I've done that.
And while later Sigur Ros albums might be better in terms of actual songs....
There's something about Von that brings me back over and over. It's not really song-focused at all. It's more of this sonic dreamscape. Washes of shoegaze dream-pop ambient harmonic richness pervading your entire world. Listen alone, in bed, lights off, and drift away....
