Once was a Montreal-based band called Priestess. Check them out, and if at all possible, send them some love. They were the only opening band for STP that got chanted by 80K people to head back out on the stage. Festival d'été de Québec, 2008. I was in that crowd, as an STP and Priestess fan. Same. This sound is distinctive, the QOTSA monster waking up. I've always preferred the slovenly fuzz of the earlier albums over the gloss of the latter. More of a drug haze, less self-aware. The chaos of Josh's polka-influenced riffs, crashing against the other instruments with wonderful circus-like disharmony. It's perfectly realised. Good times.
