I was stuck with this song in my head all day literally yesterday. "And I wish I, wish I knew the right words To make you feel better, walk out of this place And defeat them in your secret battle Show them you can be your own man again"
I saw the video title and I was like "The Whitlams? whitlams? A A aaa *snapping my fingers furiously* you know, the gamling song" thank you for reminding me 😘
Yes yes yes, I've been waiting for this, love you guys,🇦🇺👍🇦🇺 It's about finding love through the classifieds in the paper and reading the personals and peoples kinks......being lonely.....
The Whitlams - Buy Now Pay Later The Whitlams - I make Hamburgers The Whitlams - No Aphrodisiac The Whitlams - Thank You The Whitlams - You Sound Like Louis Burdett
The other classic song by The Whitlams is "Blow Up The Pokies" (pokies is a slang term for poker machines). The song is about gambling addiction and if you like "No Aphrodisiac" you might like it.
This is from their album "Eternal Nightcap" in 1997. They were massive for a long time in Australia. The band were named after one of Australia's greatest Prime Ministers, Gough Whitlam. Gough and his Government changed the Australian landscape on multiple levels. Social, cultural, spiritual, political, women's rights' Aboriginal rights, he gave us the radio station JJ 1540 am and the music T.V. show Countdown, all of which transformed Australia into a country we were proud to call home. The Whitlam Government dragged Australia out of the 'Dark Ages' of 23 years of backward, retarded, conservative Government. That's why he's called The Mighty Gough. On a side note, I played Pool with Tim Freedman at The Sandringham Hotel in Newtown before they revamped and refurbished it. Great Band and cool guy. RIP - Stevie Plunder RIP - Andy Lewis
More than just "a" Prime Minister. He was the 70's reformer who made massive changes to the country in one term. For equivalent impact in a US President you'd probably be talking Roosevelt, but in one term not four. The conservative party are still trying to undo his legacy 5 decades later
The Whitlams were huge in Australia for a little while. It's a shame that so many local bands have a huge success but can never sustain it for long. Eskimo Joe, Jet, The Vines, Missy Higgins, that Gotye fella among others all came out of the gate strong and kind of died off. Some of them make the mistake of taking off overseas at the first whiff of international interest and just flopping. Probably the biggest local success of the past few decades, Powderfinger, basically stayed put and built their careers at home. And as a result they were a constant number one band who did big tours right up until they disbanded.
@@andrewdods2236 There was a good documentary on Netflix about Parkway Drive where they are taking the enormous financial risk of making the move into arenas in order to prove that they could potentially be festival headliners.
there is a deep rabbit hole of 90s Australian Alt if you're interested in exploring it. eg Custard "apartment" - Ammonia "you're not the only one" - Even "stop and go man". and heaps more. "Apartment" would be my pick, it's a mosh pit banger.
I’m loving your Aussie journey! Give ‘Blow Up The Pokies’ a run. What we call pokies are the same that you call slot machines I think. I read the the State of NSW in Australia has the most poker machines in the world. Maybe I’m misremembering but they are up way higher than they should be considering the population
Hi guys, seeing you have discovered “The Whitlams” it maybe time to expose you to Nick Caves “Red Right Hand” , a dark Christmas present. Have a great Christmas, thanks for the reactions.
Don’t want to bring the vibe down. Loved this song then and now but I believe it was written about his band mate who committed suicide. Which I think gives it an even bigger meaning.
I always thought this song was kind of a pisstake of nick cave and the bad seeds. he goes so off the rails with the gibberish its almost like tim minchin
He's reading personal ads from the paper - basically Craigslist before Craigslist so it's only gibberish if they wrote gibberish. And Tim michin prduces anything but gibberish...
Awesome band. They did one called ‘Blow up the Pokies’ about gambling addiction. Break your heart stuff. An Aussie band everyone seems to love!

I saw them for the first time last week and they opened with this song. Fantastic show.
Still adore the whitlams 💜 songs from torch the moon just popped up on a random playlist this morning and now it’ll be stuck in my head for ages.

Definitely react to "Blow up the pokies" and "Buy now and pay later (Charlie No.2)" , "Thank you" is another great hit.
I forgot how good this song was.. blow up the pokies is another great song from them
Love love love this. PS "Whitlam" was the name of an Australian Prime Minister.

Another marvellous AUSTRALIAN BAND is The Church !!!
Try some of their songs, LOVELY !!!
I had my first beer to this song around a campfire in the middle of nowhere NSW Australia. Wow. Memories

You know they released a brand new album late last year? I love their new stuff too.
Eskimo Joe are still kicking I’m pretty sure dude
Powderfinger were the biggest local thing since INXS. Without a doubt.
Parkway Drive 👍🏻🤘🏻

Brilliant song and brilliant band. Tim's voice is so velvety!

Yes, Triple J Hottest 100. Australia’s youth radio network ( Govt sponsored) ... 👍🏻🤘🏻
One of my all-time favourites, you just don't get such skillfully written and performed songs like this very often.

And for Americans they won't know that they are listening to Bandit from Bluey.
Love Custard, Ammonia good too. Infact anything of the triple J playlist circa 1997 is the business.
Guys, you need to do Wide Open Road by The Triffids.
Love your reaction :D
Such a great song. For a fun song, check out I make hamburgers.

Tim Freedman is a very underated songwriter and vocalist. The Whitlams are still going.
If you want a great Aussie band try D.A.A.S. version of I heard if through the grapevine. that's a game changer.
I wish i could like this harder. Thier version of Grapevine is outstanding.

Another great track is "Thank You".
Did you guys have a big bowl of coco pops before this one 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Martin. Oh Yeah.
After just watching your first TISM review you could do "Martin Scorsese Is Really Quite a Jovial Fellow"

I’m relatively new to The Whitelams but I believe that song is ‘Blow Up The Pokies’.
He had two bandmates that both committed suicide. I think Buy Now Pay Later was about the other one

Um, did they even listen to the words? It is a very depressing song ... not sure whether Americans are into this kind of depressing song...
They are probably the most boring as and annoying Aystralian band from that era. No thanks.
