Introduced to this amazing band about 12 years ago and quickly became my favorite rock n roll band of all time. Too bad my country didn't appreciate them when we should have.
Sadly, your loss. But it wasn't "your country" that didn't appreciate them, it was a few record company executives and promoters. If Cold Chisel's music got out to the general populace, they would know how many people did appreciate them. Glad you got on board. Us Aussies grew up listening to this. They call Australia "The Lucky Country". Cold Chisel are one of the reasons why.
i love any chisel song. I first saw them live in 1978, and my wife and I are going to see them tomorrow night as part of their 50-year anniversary tour.
They Could not Cut it in America, that is why America was Saved from the Talentless Hack called "Barnzeeee" Scream a little louder Jimmy. Now the Raisin Breads will chirp with there 3 words, unable to construct a sentence. Because there father is Ray and they are Raisin Breads.
hey guys Chisel are about to embark on their 50 year tour this year starting in oct around Aus, they have sold out EVERY SHOW around the country (16). Their last show will be in Adelaide at the super cars race where a crowd of 100 thousand peps will be in attendance & the only way for tickets to the show is to go to the race... I am lucky enough to grow up listening to them & seeing them live multiple times, like a fine wine they get better with age.. anyway thanks for the reaction..
Mate, the only Wine you drink is out of a Box and later on out of Silver Pillow. Nighty Nite, sweet heart, rest your golden locks on that Silver Pillow.
Jimmy is next level in terms of talent and ability. Every member of Chisel is amazing and when you put them all together it’s insane. We were privileged to see Ian Moss locally a couple of years back. it was an acoustic night - just Ian , a chair, two guitars and a whole bunch of talent. He was incredible. Jimmy has such a huge presence that sometimes Ian’s talent is overlooked. Well that’s what I see sometimes. We in Australia are blessed with so much talent and sadly the world missed out so many times. I love your vids appreciating Australian music. Rock on.
Because it is so stripped back from an instrumental perspective, there is no where to hide in terms of the vocals. They need to be perfect, which they where.
You are right. People see the title and then try to make the lyrics fit that narrative.. and they don't really. The lyrics make more sense of course, when you realise the true story.
A brutal break up causes PTSD so the song does draw a good comparison- especially for the children involved if there are any, often with lifelong consequences.
Two of the finest singers ever! They are, just like John Farnham, ACDC, INXS, national treasures. This song written by their very talented drummer. We Aussie's, adore them❤ We Aussie's adore you❣️
Vietnam was a terrible time for both Australians and Americans. The Elizabeth boys lost alot of their mates in Vietnam. Lest We forget! Thank you to all that have served and those who never came home.
G’Day mate, so happy you are loving some of our Aussie legends. Cold Chisel ultimate pub band. I grew up listening to these guys. Jimmy and Ian Moss absolute fire same concert When The War Is Over. Cheers Kev
Such a beautiful and heartbreaking song, played by my favourite band. I tear up every time. Mossy kicks it out of the park, the harmonies with Jimmy are perfection, and then Jimmy’s third verse is sublime. Steve RIP out front and centre on the maracas 🪇 is where he should be here. Chisel are going on their 50th year anniversary tour. I have tickets for October 2024 in Perth. Can’t wait. 🎉🎉
You lucky bugger! I saw Chisel in 1978 at the Peter Frampton concert at Sydney Cricket Ground. Not since but that concert in November will be KICK ARSE!!
You two have done a great job on our Aussie music reactions. While we have been having a great time going unnoticed down under and now you and the rest of the world is just getting a glimpse of what we Aussies have been listening to for many years. I hope you get to listen to a lot more of our music and enjoy it like we have done for many years now. Keep up your good work on that it's much appreciated. One day when you finally get here you will enjoy our unique country and its friendly laid-back people.
thanks for the aussie music guys. we appreciate it. Bands like Cold Chisel and The Angels never found success in America at the time. But are finding success now. i got my ticket for Cold Chisel 50th Anniversary next year.
We all know Don Walker is one of the greatest songwriters ever, but this is one of the few that Drummer Steve Prestwich wrote, along with Flame trees and Forever now. Just those three songs make him a great songwriter in his own right.
You mentioned that having both Jimmy and Ian being great singers was a huge asset to the band. You also mentioned the song was written by the drummer Steve Prestwich (RIP). He also released a solo album, and it is brilliant. You also see (very briefly) Bassist Phil Small singing backup vocals, and that's pretty rare. Don Walker [keyboards] (who writes most of Cold Chisel's songs) doesn't sing.
Don has sung on the track Knocking on Heavens Door from 1980. He even has a solo part. There is a live version from Manly Vale out on YT. He also sung with the band collectively in the song Choir Girl. Just saw him sing with Slim Dusty yesterday. He was out front without a piano, too.
Surprised you hadn’t done this one yet. Such a brilliant song. I’ve made a tribute to this song and its maker (RIP STEVE) on my page which shows its “evolution” if anyone is interested. ❤❤
Was happy to be at this concert but am excited to be heading to one of their shows at the end of the year. Most excited because it’ll be my teenage daughter’s first ever concert and I’ll get to share that experience with her.
@ markboorman- going back 14 or so years we took our twins who were 15 to see Barnsley and Joe cocker, my son met a girl there and they have been together ever since= keep an eye on your daughter🤣🤣🤣

I agree with you but everuyone checks this version out, I listened to that version for 20 years before this one became so popular , I cant get my head around the slow tempo of this. And I have heard this for over 20 years now as well.
So many memories, besides the voices passion and harmony, they wrote some incredible songs! There is a video of Jimmy and John Farnham doing this together too! Have you seen/heard Working Class Man, Jimmy Barnes at his youthful best! 👍
The bloke who wrote this, Don Walker (who's playing the keys) isn't just one of the greatest Australian songwriters, but one of the THE greatest songwriters. He creates characters, tells stories, and brings pain and beauty together in the most extraordinary of songs. He's a national treasure.
Saturday evening here in Aus. Spent a couple of hours this afternoon at vocals rehearsing this song, I'll be singing lead with my son on guitar for a concert coming up in a month or so. I'm no where as good as Barnsy, but I'll do my best. Thanks for sharing.

Great live band, this is one of the best versions later on, I still love Chisel when they were young and raw, one of my fav bands ever and I'm a Kiwi! not an Aussie! Right up there with the best from anywhere imo. Ian Mioss is often overlooked outside of Aus and NZ, but he's just as good as Barnsey just different and obviously a great guitarist as well as vocalist and song writer, def held his own in the younger days! Hello wolf hunters-love your reactions-play do something on Ian Moss-another Australian music legend as was every single member of Cold chisel-probably the best live Australian band ever.
Brilliant performance from a band that officially had NOT performed together for 20 years. My favourites ( live of course ) are One Long Day ( especially the version that starts with a different song and then blues itsway into One Long Day ), the improvised Georgia when Jimmy needed a break off stage, Wild Thing from The Last Stand tour, 1983 and many many more that reactors rarely discover.
Hey guys want to hear a great song by another great aussie band AC/DC when Bon Scott was lead vocals, Let there be rock, an awesome song, came up on my phone play list, forgot what a great song it is, well worth a listen.

Oh God hit the nail on the head
Us kiwis feel the same love us some cold chisel
Jimmy and Mossy singing together is just pure magic. it goes right to the soul of the average Australian.
For our brother in arms, drummer, and never forgotten hero, songwriter: Steve Prestwich. ... His story goes on forever.
I have said it about this song and version before - Mossy brings the haunt to the lyrics, and Jimmy brings the pain.
Nailed it
You summed it up perfectly saying the band and audience sharing a moment together.

To me, the best band to come out of Aus should have beem a world phenomena buy thats ok we here in Aus know how good they are.
There is no doubting this is a great version, but the studio version is also incredible.
Studio version is heaps better, if we just talking about the music.
Because it is so stripped back from an instrumental perspective, there is no where to hide in terms of the vocals. They need to be perfect, which they where.
Just remember its about a brutal divorce, many people interpret it for post war PTSD.
You are right. People see the title and then try to make the lyrics fit that narrative.. and they don't really.

I always associated it with my own jacked up relationship at the time. Chisel has caught me in my feelers in a lot of situations in my life.
