  • The Longer B1 30W laser has been a market leader for almost a year. However, Longer has now released an upgraded Longer B1 40W laser option that can power your projects with 44-48W. This promises to be a great cutting laser, but is it also an excellent engraving laser? Let's find out.
    In this video, I'll review the new Longer Laser B1 40W and show how it compares to its older sibling as well as other 40W lasers. I'll show you the results of my standard test suite and then go head-to-head with the Creality Falcon 2 and xTool S1.

    hi steve! thx for the review, im looking for a laser cutting for 3mm mdf wood to make lamps lake 20 for day... do you think this is a good machine for that? or have any other to recomend with the budget? thanks in advanced!

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  4 месяца назад

      Yes, absolutely. Note when cutting mdf you need to get the right type of material. The mdf sold at hardware stores is usually not great for cutting with any laser because of the glue used in it. You’d be better to use plywood

    Hi,
    Enjoyed watching this review
    Looking for a 40w diode and for Me the main criteria is generated noise, the combined noise of the modules fan and air assist.
    I currently have atomstack x30 which Has been very good. I work outdoors on My appartment terrace sandwiched between neighbours who are oblivious to My machine, they are lovely folk and out of respect dont want anything more noisy than current set up,so the x30 is My noise benchmark
    I have watched many of your reviews and thus would welcome your valued opinion as to which manufacturers 40w machine of the current crop is the quitest

      Once you go to 40W, most lasers will have a robust cooling fan, so they'll be a bit louder, but none are unacceptably loud. The thing to look for is a unit where the fan is running only when the laser is working or for a couple of minutes of cooldown after a job. Some will run the whole time the unit is powered - and those annoy me, too, honestly. On most of the recent lasers I've looked at, air assist is very quiet, so it's probably not a concern.
      The B1 40W isn't too bad for noise, but maybe you want to look for a laser that is more enclosed. The new Genmitsu L8 (which I will have a review video out for in the next few days) is available in a 40W version, and it is enclosed, so it is generally much quieter than any open-frame laser. It also happens to be built like a tank.

    I have the 40 b1 laser and was wondering if you had any luck cutting cork and if so what settings did you get the best results...thanks Bill

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  6 месяцев назад

      Cork is notoriously hard to cut and unless it’s very thin you will struggle with it. All you can really do is try a martial cut test, but be ready with a fire extinguisher because it burns pretty readily

    i have been doing some learning and prototyping with a 5,5 watt atomstack. I plan on getting a high powered diode or low end co2, one of my issues with the 5 watt, besides being slow, is the fouling of the lens. I dont know if this is because the cut speed is slow, or my material is extra nasty. i dont want to be stoppng and breaking down to clean all the time. I'm using air assist designed for the m40 module at fairly high settings. what is known about this fouling problem? and is the longer 40 or others more or less susceptible to it.

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  6 месяцев назад

      You don’t say what you’re cutting but I almost never have to clean a lens unless I’ve been cutting for many hours. The air assist should be helping with this, but if you are at 100% power and still at crawling speed then maybe the smoke is collecting around the lens. With higher power lasers the speed tends to be higher so the laser gets out of the way of any smoke before it can collect, and the air assist is generally better on these lasers.

      @@SteveMakesEverything I'm engraving and cutting some 3mm supposed basswood plywood from amazon. It is taking 5 passes at 90mm/min at 100% to cut. And it is off gassing something toxic that necessitates a carbon respirator despite my (weak and needs upgrading) exhaust system.
      I get a grey powder deposit on the bottom end, that after about 3 hours of running has gotten on the laser protective lens and starts to degrade performance.
      This all is clearly not workable for a production maker project. So I will be getting a better machine. I'm also looking at using some Aspen that I have an effectively unlimited supply of locally on my property, etc. I'm researching if the cost/effort to log and mill it will add value to the end product as "locally made with dead fall material" or some such representation.
      The good thing is I've got a pretty well identified concept/product line and target market, and the prototype is getting some good reactions and feedback,so far. It will also potentially call for other materials besides wood: Acrylic, glass, perhaps metal. I'm starting with wood. I'm not looking to be a job shop.
      Your channel has been a great source of information. I'll make every effort to use your links. Is there any kind of forum or discord channel that you-tubers like yourself, Vintauri, others participate in? You mentioned consulting in one of your videos. Is that around the maker/laser/cnc topic or in a prior life? How would I engage you?

    How does this compare to the new xtool s1 40?

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  5 месяцев назад

      Really, these are completely different lasers, but from a power perspective, they are pretty much equal. The choice would be whether you want an enclosed laser or an open frame laser (which you'd probably want to put in an enclosure of some sort anyway).

      Yes you can get a rotary for this, though if your mugs have handles then you will want a rotary chuck. You can buy this from Longer, but an Xtool RA2 Pro would work, as would Atezr’s very nice rotary

    Hello. I appreciate your videos. I actually bought this laser based on your review. I was shocked when I received the laser "kit". The only instructions was a quick start guide which only shows the assembly process. I did get it put together but the machine will not start. Getting help from Longer is virtually nonexistent. I tried email but have only heard back 1 time. The machine will not turn on. The green light on the power supply is on. The funny thing is that when the key is on, the emergency button is in the up position and you press the power/on button, the light on the power supply goes off. There are no lights coming on or any noises, beeps, buzzes or fan noise coming from the laser engraver. Nothing. I would love to move forward but there was no operation manual included in the package and no way to get information from the company. So disappointed. If anyone has any idea on where else I could go for information, please let me know. Many thanks in advance.

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  5 месяцев назад

      That sounds like a direct short across the power supply, which is definitely not good. You will need Longer support to respond to this.
      The only thing I could suggest would be to unplug the cable from the controller (i.e. the cable that powers the laser module and stepper motors) and then try to power up. If the lights come on, then you know there is a short somewhere on the output side of the controller.
      In that case, unplug all of the things at the other end of the cable and power it on to verify it still works (This tests the cable). Then, one at a time, plug in the limit switches, steppers, and finally, the laser module. Checking for no short at each step.
      This will at least tell you where the issue is, and you can focus on that area to look for a broken cable or some open wire touching the frame.
      NOTE! Any time you are unplugging or plugging cables be sure the power is off. Not doing this will damage the controller.

Should i wait it or buy longer b1 40 watt

      @@musaeser161The 24W Delta is one of my favorites, but to this point no one has seen the 40W version, so it's impossible to say if it is great or not. I do have a 40W Long B1 and love it's predictability. However, what is on my workbench is the xTool S1 (because it is safely enclosed), though it's not cheap and support for Lightburn doesn't take advantage of all of it's feature, so you'll want to use XCS (but I'm starting to like XCS more and more).
